A PRIEST AT THE GROUND ZERO

“After the terrorist attack in New York on September 2001 during the first couple of days, standing there with my FBI raid jacket with ‘chaplain’ on the back I was overwhelmed by the number of firemen, policemen and other rescue people who came up to me saying, ‘chaplain, may I speak to you for a moment?’. I heard more confessions in two weeks than I had in years.

I offer them hope, consolation and love. I am honored that I was able to be part of heroic people’s lives. Looking into the eyes of everyone around I saw an inner wound to the soul itself. God was also present in those eyes giving us all the strength we needed to go that extra mile”.

Father Paul Wierichs, Passionist Priest

PRAYING AND REMEMBERING SEPTEMBER 11, 2001-2012

Jesus, beloved Savior, in remembering these terrible events,

we recognize our great need for your guidance and protection.

We have painfully learned that our country is vulnerable and that violence can disrupt both individuals and nations.

We pray then for healing for all the people whose lives were shattered in the attacks.

We pray for those who defend our freedom. We pray for wisdom for our national leaders.

We pray for peace, for our country and our world.

Jesus, beloved Savior, as we remember, hold us in Your loving hands.

Amen.

Sunday’s Message Mark 7: 31-37

TEN COMMANDMENTS FOR HAPPY SENIOR YEARS

1.Your shall take care of your appearance every day. Dress well, as if you were going to a party. What bigger celebration than life itself!!

2.You shall not confine yourself to your room or your home. Go out for a walk in the

park. Stagnant water putrefies, and unused machinery corrodes.

3.You shall love exercise as much as you love yourself. Spend a while in the gym. Take a walk inside or outside the house. Guard against indolence.

4.You shall avoid movements and gestures of a dejected old person…bowed head, bent back, dragging footsteps. When people see you, may they admire your cheerful demeanor.

5.You shall not talk about your age or complain about your aches and pains. You shall stop believing yourself older and sicker than you really are. Besides, no one will pay attention to you. No one wants to hear about your hospital stays. Stop calling yourself old and sick.

6.You shall cultivate optimism about everything. Put a good face on misfortune. Be positive in your judgments, good-natured in speech, smile a lot, have a pleasant manner. Old age is not a question of years, but a state of mind. Instead of adding years to your life, add life to your years.

7.You shall try to be useful to yourself and others. Do not be a parasite, nor a branch voluntarily broken off the tree of life. Be self-sufficient whenever possible, and even offer help. You can help with a smile, advice, service, experience and wisdom.

8.You shall strengthen yourself with your hands and your mind. Work is excellent therapy. Every type of work you do, whether physical, intellectual, or artistic serves as medicine for all ills. Work is always a blessing.

9.You shall be lively and cordial in your relationships, above all within your family, trying to preserve a spirit of togetherness. It is here that you have an opportunity to interact with members of all ages: children, youth and adults. You will thus broaden your circle of friends to include many others besides those of your age. Never shop for antiques!

10.You shall stop believing that "the old times" were better. Never imprison yourself in your world and complain about the present. You are a child of God; He created you and continues caring for you. Your later life is a gift, a gift of God. Enjoy it !

PastorPastor’’s Notess Notes

September 9, 2012

PastorPastor’’s Notess Notes

The people brought to Him a deaf man who had a speech impediment… Jesus put His finger into the man’s ears and, spitting, touched his tongue; He then looked up to heaven and groaned, and said to him, “Ephphatha”- that is, “Be opened”.

In the midst of all the noise in our lives, we can become “deaf” to the presence of God in our midst. Fear and ignorance often distort our ability to realize the good in the midst of bad, the reasons to hope in the wake of despair, compassion in the ashes of anger and hate.

The words Jesus speaks to the deaf man in today’s Gospel – Ephphatha- are spoken to us, as well: “open” our hearts and spirits to experience God’s compassion in the love of family and friends, to realize God’s presence in all times and places, to embrace God’s grace despite our difficulty to trust, to hope, to understand.

May Ephphatha become our prayer: that we may be “open” to the presence of God in times of both joy and sorrow, enabling us to bring the compassion and mercy of God’s presence into our own lives and every life we touch.

LOS DIEZ MANDAMIENTOS PARA UNA VEJEZ FELIZ
