Fr. Joe . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Dear Saint Alphonsus Family, Happy Mother’s Day! May the Lord continue to bless all the mothers in our community. As we appreciate and honor our earthly mothers, let us also remember that we have a Heavenly Mother, the Virgin Mary, who always loves, protects, and intercedes to God for us. At the Mass last Sunday, we had a special prayer service to mark the beginning of the month of Mary. We will continue to do this for the rest of the month to express our love and devotion to our Heavenly Mother. As we continue to face this severe storm, we entrust our family, our community into the protective arms of our Heavenly Mother. The pandemic has really turned the whole world up-side down. All our personal and communal plans have been either cancelled or postponed. This weekend our parish should have joyfully welcomed a new deacon, Frank Mattison, who has faithfully embraced his vocation and formation. Yes, Frank’s ordination has been postponed and we don’t know yet the new date for his ordination. I know that this is very hard for Frank and Wendy. Let us continue to support and pray for Frank during this time. As I have mentioned several times in past communications, I am very grateful to Carol Holden who said “Yes” to come out of her retirement to help me when I first arrived at St. Alphonsus. She promised to help me for one year, but, with my request, she has stayed for another year. In the last two years, Carol, with all her knowledge, experience, and enthusiasm, has helped me lead the parish. In the last two years, she has also been a loving mentor for Doreen Kelly. Now Carol, after fulfilling her promise to me, has decided to resume her retirement. This is Carol’s last month serving as the Pastoral Associate, and then Doreen will step into the position. On behalf of the whole community, I would like to say thanks to Carol for everything she has done for our community for many years, especially in the last two years. May God bless her and her retirement! As we continue to go deeper and deeper into the heart of the storm, we hear the comforting message of Jesus in the Gospel reading this Sunday: “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You have faith in God, have faith also in Me” (Jn 14:1). Let us contemplate this message and allow it to sink deep into our hearts. Amidst all the curses and evil things going on in our world and in our society, trusting in the almighty and merciful Lord is the best thing that we can and should do. As residents of Illinois, we have not seen the light at the end of the tunnel yet; we get confused with all conflicting messages and fake news; we are terrified with the growing number of people infected and especially with more deaths every day. Jesus reminds us that, “I am the way, the truth and the life.” Let us turn to Jesus, take refuge in his merciful heart, and trust in Him totally because He is truly our way, our truth, and our life. May the Lord continue to bless and protect our community during this pandemic. Fr. Joseph Le

A decree from Cardinal Cupich to the People of God noting, mindful of our current circumstances and Canon law:

1. That the obligation to receive Holy Communion during the Easter season is removed this year due to the impossibility of attendance by the People of God at celebration of Holy Mass. 2. That each of the faithful initiated into the Most Holy Eucharist is encouraged to offer an Act of Spiritual Communion, in union with the entire People of God in the Archdiocese and throughout the world in this time of stress and difficulty. 3. That all of the faithful, in accord with the Tradition and Teaching of the Church, are urged to offer a perfect Act of Contrition, in complete dependence upon the mercy and love of God, in sorrow for all sins and with a firm resolve to confess all serious sin at the next available time.

Act of Spiritual Communion can be found on the parish website: https://www.saintalphonsusph.org/

PHONE NUMBER: _________________________________________________________

Thank You for Your Regular Ongoing Giving: Creative Ways to Help Your Parish:

The good work done every day by the clergy, ministries, and organizations of St. Alphonsus Liguori Parish only happens because of the regular and faithful generosity of you, our parishioners through cash, check, and online giving.

Per IRS, donors 70 ½ can transfer up to $100,000, from their IRA’s directly to St. Alphonsus Liguori Parish and not have to pay tax on the withdrawal. The transfer must be from the financial institution to St. Alphonsus Liguori.

The IRA donor can: 1. Transfer part of the IRA/MRD to St Alphonsus Liguori and keep part. 2. Transfer all of the IRA/MRD to St. Alphonsus Liguori, 3. Keep all of the IRA/MRD and likely pay more in taxes and maybe even reach a higher tax bracket.

The IRA/MRD donation may be in addition to any other charitable giving you have planned. One may also take out additional IRA distributions for personal use, but this is taxable.

By donating IRA/MRD money to St. Alphonsus Liguori, you can reduce your tax bill while supporting your parish, WOW!

For help or questions, please contact Margaret Turansky, Stewardship Council, 847-797-0877 and / or your attorney, tax advisor.

Drop off form in the secure mailbox outside the Parish Office.

A Prayer for Mothers

O Lord, let us pray for every Mother For each one has a common goal- To love and train Your children- Their bodies, minds, and souls.

We pray for Mom’s who’ve just begun Whose hearts are filled with love,

But feel a little fearful- Please guide them from above.

For Mom’s who choose to stay at home We pray you’ll bless their life-

Their busy days, with little praise- Please bless their sacrifice.

Lord, please bless the single Moms Who raise their children alone.

When they feel discouraged and lonely May Your loving heart be their home.

And bless the special Mothers Who’ve embraced another’s child-

And adopted them as family. We know that Heaven smiles.

Every Mother needs your help- Friends, Aunts, and Grandmas, too-

To help raise up godly children Who will love and follow You.

Amen
