My dear family of St. Andrew the Apostle!

During my recent vacation to the beautiful country of Slovenija, the homeland of my ancestors, besides visiting extended family of aunts, uncles, and their children, my cousins, and their children, my first cousins once removed, I had a number of opportunities to head for “the top of the world” to reflect and contemplate the gift of life – in other words to do the one thing that only is needed in each one of our lives, that is, to sit at the feet of Jesus and contemplate His Word and words. In today’s Gospel, Jesus says to Martha, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things. There is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part and it will not be taken from her” (Lk 10,42). All of us have the busy-ness of our daily life, and each of the things we are worried and anxious about are gifts from God. But in the midst of all the hustle and bustle, we NEED to do what Mary did: STOP at the feet of Jesus and listen – everyday! THERE IS NEED OF ONLY ONE THING, Jesus says. All other things will find their right place, when we spend some time every day at the feet of Jesus and listen – contemplation of Jesus, the Word of God, and the words He shares with us: THAT is the only thing NEEDED! I love to go into high country, mountains and hills, as I did in the picture below, into the Slovenian Alps, to contemplate, to spend time with God. But even when these high places are far from us, we all need to go daily into the heights of heaven to God through contemplation. The Fourth and last Part of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, under the Life of Prayer section, three Expressions of Prayer are named and discussed, Vocal, Meditation, and, the third expression, Contemplative Prayer. St. Teresa of Jesus (of Avila) says contemplative prayer “in my opinion is nothing else than a close sharing between friends; it means taking time frequently to be alone with him who we know loves us.” This is precisely what Mary, the sister of Martha did, to take time to be and sit and listen at the feet of Jesus. Contemplation seeks Him “whom my soul loves,” namely, it is Jesus, and in Him, the Father. We seek Him, because to desire Him is always the beginning of love, and we seek Him in that pure faith which causes us to be born of Him and to live in Him. In this inner prayer we can still meditate, but our attention is fixed on the Lord himself. We do not undertake contemplative prayer only when we have the time: we make time for the Lord, with the firm determination not to give up, no matter what trials and dryness one may encounter. We might not always be able to meditate, but one can always enter into inner prayer, independently of the conditions of health, work, or emotional state. And how do we contemplate? We “gather up” the heart, recollect our whole being under the prompting of the Holy Spirit, abide in the dwelling place of the Lord which we are, awaken our faith in order to enter into the presence of Him who awaits us. We let our masks fall and turn our hearts back to the Lord who loves us, so as to hand ourselves over to him as an offering to be purified and transformed. It is the prayer of the child of God, of the forgiven sinner who agrees to welcome the love by which he is loved and who wants to respond to it by loving even more. But he or she knows that the love he is returning is poured out by the Spirit in his heart, for everything is grace from God. Contemplative prayer is the poor and humble surrender to the loving will of the Father in ever deeper union with his beloved Son. In this pre-eminently intense time of contemplative prayer, the Father strengthens our inner being with power through his Spirit that Christ may dwell in our hearts through faith and we may be grounded in love, as we listen to hear the Word of God. In contemplation, we fix our gaze of faith on Jesus. “I look at him and he looks at me”: this is what a certain peasant of Ars used to say to his holy pastor Fr. John Vianney about his prayer before the tabernacle. His gaze purifies our heart; the light of the countenance of Jesus illumines the eyes of our heart and teaches us to see everything in the light of his truth and his compassion for all people, the more to love Jesus and follow him. In the silence of contemplative prayer, words are not speeches; they are like kindling that feeds the fire of love. In this silence, unbearable to the “outer” man, the Father speaks to us his incarnate Word, who suffered, died, and rose; in this silence the Spirit of adoption enables us to share in the prayer of Jesus, to be united with Him, in a communion of love bearing Life for the multitude. We must be willing to keep watch with Jesus one hour (Mt 26,40). May we, every day, do the only thing that is needed every day – to contemplate the beauty of God in Jesus. All other things find their place and make more sense only through contemplation. What we receive in contemplation, whether on the highest mountain or in the lowest valley, we are then called to share. “Con-template” literally means to “temple with” or “tabernacle with.” We enter into the Temple of Jesus’ Body as He enters into the temple of our Body and Soul – from contemplation comes communion, life!

In the loving Hearts of Jesus and Mary, Fr. Gregor

In this Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus affirms that to be a disciple we must also sit at his feet and listen to him. Practically speaking, this means being attentive to the Scriptures during Mass. It also means taking the time

to be with Jesus in prayer—not just saying prayers, but being quiet and listening to how Jesus speaks to our hearts. This week, remember in your prayers those in need in our parish.

Keep Praying

St. Monica, whose feast we celebrate in August, is often known as “the persistent mother.” She watched her oldest son, Augustine, turn his back on his Christian faith.

Monica was exasperated. For years she gave up talking directly to her son on the advice of a local bishop, who told her that it was better to talk to God about Augustine then to Augustine about God.

The mother never gave up praying for her son. Eventually Augustine gave up his wild ways, was baptized, and later ordained and named bishop of Hippo. St. Augustine went on to become one of the Church’s greatest scholars.

Today’s readings address the importance of persistent prayer. Abraham, in spite of trepidation that he is bothering the Lord, continues to ask about the fate of Sodom and Gomorrah. Jesus, in Luke’s Gospel, tells his disciples to “ask and you will receive; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you” (Luke 11:9). This is our charge: keep praying. TOTUS TUUS NEW SUMMER YOUTH PROGRAM

St. Andrew the Apostle July 16-22, 2016

WHAT IS TOTUS TUUS? Totus Tuus is a week-long “parish mission” for Catholic youth whereby seminarians and college students proclaim the Gospel and promote the Catholic faith through evangelization, catechesis, apologetics, Christian witness, the sacraments, Marian devotion, Eucharistic worship, and FUN!

Totus Tuus seeks to inspire in young people a true longing for holiness, a deep desire for daily conversion, and openness to their vocation by constantly challenging them to give themselves entirely to Christ through Mary and by continually strengthening their prayer lives in imitation of Her.

TOTALLY YOURS Totus Tuus, a Latin phrase meaning “totally yours,” was the motto of St. John Paul II. Taken from St. Louis de Montfort’s True Devotion to Mary, it signifies our desire to give ourselves entirely to Jesus Christ through the hands of our Blessed Mother Mary. It also expresses our effort to give all that we have to every young person we encounter.

I am amazed by this story! Abraham, sitting at this doorway under a tree, sees three strangers approach. He runs to greet them. He sees to the bathing of their tired dusty feet. He sits them down under his tree. He feeds them. They engage in conversation. The story is a little ambiguous, but Abraham comes to know them as someone(s) divine. He responds with lavish hospitality. Perhaps my mercy work this week is wrestling with these discipleship questions: • How will I greet and treat strangers? • How can I, who can I literally bathe or “bathe” with kindness? • Who will I feed dinner?

GRANT ETERNAL REST, LIGHT AND PEACE TO ALL FAITHFUL DEPARTED: Nick Kolick, Ventura Rameriz

Please call the parish office by Monday at (815) 886-4165 for the name of your loved one to be placed for 3 weeks on our short term prayer list. Also, please call the parish office, if you are hospitalized and would like a visit from our hospital ministry team or homebound and in need of communion.

Hospital Visitation of Parishioners Please remember that if you or any family members find yourselves in a hospital, be sure to let them know you are a parishioner at St. Andrew’s — it doesn’t hurt to say it a few times, either! Whenever we priests, deacons or Eucharistic Ministers come to visit, we check the hospital list of parishioners printed under “St. Andrew.” But if you’re not listed as a parishioner of St. Andrew, we won’t know you’re even there! We do not want to miss you! You can always call us, too, at the office, ext. 301. Thank you. May the Lord Jesus be with you all your days, to love and be loved by Him, to honor and serve Him, as He honors and serves us!
