MUCH-NEEDED PRAYER

Each Christian needs half an hour of prayer each day, except when we are busy; then we need an hour. —St. Francis de Sales

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Last Wednesday, the greatest pilgrimage in our tradition ended with the feast of Saint James at his shrine in Compostela, Spain. Every year, as many as a hundred thousand persons walk a portion of the medieval way of the pilgrim, earning the right to wear the scallop shell symbol of this journey of faith. In legend, this city on the northern coast of Spain is the final resting place of the apostle, and the full name of the cathedral is “Saint James of the Field of Stars.” There is a tradition that Saint James the Great preached there. In the Roman Catholic tradition, the pilgrimage, like any procession, is a symbol, life’s journey distilled, a powerful sign of our journey toward a certain goal. The perils of the road, the support of companions, the contemplative slower pace of life, have the potential to transform and renew the pilgrims in ways that last a lifetime. Along the way, the distinctions between rich and poor fall away, and everyone shares humble rustic food and stops for the night in hostels or under the stars. After a long walk, the experience of entering through the great doors into the vast cathedral filled with incense, light, and song is a foretaste of heaven. The pilgrims often say that their whole lives are redirected toward that moment of entry into the heavenly Jerusalem. The most memorable feature of the cathedral is called the botofumeiro, an incense burner on pulleys and chains that sweeps through the cathedral in immense circles, swirling clouds of sweet-smelling incense around the vast nave. —Rev. WEEKLY MIRACLE This week marks the beginning of a kind of “liturgical detour.” We have been listening to Saint Mark’s Gospel during this liturgical year (Year B). Today we begin to hear a long section from John’s Gospel, starting with the miracle of the multiplication of the loaves and fishes. This miracle story is a prelude to the Lord’s statements that we will begin hearing in a few weeks, in which Jesus refers to himself as the “bread of life.” Each week we witness a miracle at Mass. We do not see a multiplication of loaves before us. What our eyes of faith allow us to see is the miracle of the transformation of common elements—bread and wine—into the Lord’s Body and Blood. Once we have received the Lord, the multiplication begins, for in the Eucharist we are strengthened to multiply our efforts to feed the poor, shelter the homeless, and bring comfort to the despairing. The Society of St. Vincent DePaul St. Andrew the Apostle Conference neighbor helping neighbor… Our helpline 815-886-4165 ext. 304

All calls are confidential with callbacks within 24 hours.

In today’s Gospel Jesus greatly exceeds the apostle’s and the crowd’s expectations: He fed them with his inspiring messages and with the food that once was little but now feeds so many; giving example of God’s presence and his love for all mankind.

Consider sharing the love of God by your prayer and doing good works. Our conference of St. Vincent de Paul works to spread our faith by helping those who are suffering due to unemployment, illness and other devastating circumstances.

Please consider joining our friendly, dedicated group who visit those in need in their homes. We will be having a membership drive at the end of September or you can contact our help line: say you are interested in volunteering and we will return your call with more information. Call our help line: (815) 886-4165 Ext. 304. Peace be with you!

"Yolanda" came to Waterleaf very uncertain about her future; she was pregnant and already the mother of four.

While she was working, her husband was unemployed, and they were struggling financially. She felt abortion to be her best option. After meeting with her Waterleaf Advocate about the effects of abortion, parenting another child, as well as making an adoption plan, she agreed she had a "lot to think about". We reminded her to wait until we confirmed a viable pregnancy prior to deciding, and she was open to this. She was tearful throughout her appointment and while she agreed adoption was a gift, she struggled with the idea. We checked back in with her a few days later and she indicated that she was still feeling very overwhelmed and they didn't feel ready for another baby. When Yolanda returned for her second ultrasound, she said that she and her husband were thinking of keeping the baby and were hoping for a girl! After seeing the images on the ultrasound screen, she was even more convinced that keeping the baby was the right choice. We offered her assistance with resources and provided diapers and wipes for her youngest child. In addition, we were able to apply for Project Love to assist her with rent payment. We were so happy to recently learn of her delivery of a healthy baby boy named "Andrew". Yolanda and her husband are grateful for the assistance from Waterleaf which helped them make the choice of life!

Waterleaf would like to extend a heartfelt “THANK YOU” to the parishioners of St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic Parish for their amazing support through the monthly envelope campaign. As of July 12, 2018, the parishioners at St. Andrew have collected $12,448.00! Your support ensures that we can provide the material and emotional support necessary for men and women to choose life for their babies. Sometimes, just the simple fact that our doors are open, and a woman visits us, rather than an abortion provider, is the difference between life and death. We greatly appreciate your support and ask that you keep Waterleaf in your prayers. For information about Waterleaf and our programs and services, please contact us at 630-701-6270 or visit us on the web at www.onechoiceonelife.org.

May 2018 First Communion Groups - we still have many photos, which you ordered, in the Faith Formation office for pick-up. PLEASE make a point to stop in and retrieve these lovely mementos of this most holy day! Blessings!

Faith: the Next Generation – Pass It On! Almost 400 children and young people, grades 1st through 12th, will sign up this fall to learn more about Jesus and our Catholic faith. You can help them learn and grow by becoming a catechist for Family Faith Formation. With classes offered on a varied schedule you are almost sure to find a time that fits your schedule. As you nurture the faith of our young, you will learn and grow as well! As one long-time catechist once said, “I learn so much from the children!” We provide you with training, materials, and support. Classes begin September 16, 2018. If interested or for more information, please contact Annmarie in the Faith Formation office: [email protected] or 815-886-5962 ext. 503.

YOUTH MINISTRY NEWS Teens, are you interested in finding a group of like-minded teens to grow in friendship, faith and service? St. Andrew the Apostle is organizing a ministry just for youth!

If you want to get involved in some way please reach out to Annmarie at [email protected]. Please provide her with your name, best means to contact you and your school and grade. Adults, we could use a few good mentors in our ministry. Is God inviting you to be involved here?

Do you have a son or daughter, grandson or granddaughter, brother or sister, niece or nephew who is in the 18-22 college age group? Would you like to send him/her a gift which would attract them to the love of truth, goodness and beauty while at the same time inspiring them to come closer to the Lord?

If you do, place a phone call to our parish office (815-886-4165, ext. 301) and leave with the secretary the name and address of your relative and he/she will receive a subscription to the magazine Radiant (for young women) or the magazine Valiant (for young men). This subscription will be a gift from St. Andrew the Apostle Parish. Radiant expresses the idea of authentic femininity – from fashion to devotionals making it an excellent ground for women to celebrate, develop and express their feminine “genius”. Valiant makes courageous virtue trendy again. The content invokes in the reader a desire to live out their calling with courage, strength and conviction.

After registration in the parish, please attend an Evening of Awareness, if you have not attended a class in the past two years, to register for Baptism and select a date. Classes are presented on the first Wednesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. in the Parish Hall. Baptism is celebrated on the third Sunday of the month at 1:30 p.m.

EUCHARIST AND CONFIRMATION
