St. Andrew’s Anglican Church Sunday, July 19, 2020 Masked … We’re excited to welcome Minna Varkey’s family to St. Andrew’s! Minna has been a member of our parish family for more than a year, but her family just recently came to the U.S. from India … yes, amid a pandemic that necessitated a quarantine period. We’re so grateful that they arrived safely and are healthy! … & Unmasked Minna Varkey is pictured above with her husband, Sandeep Pathak, and their children. We look forward to getting to know the family better, and hope that some day soon they’ll be able to meet us without masks, too! (The photographer kept her own mask on and maintained a safe social distance when this picture was taken, and shares that it was nice to see some smiles!) With Delaware County among six of seven central Ohio counties now designated at Level 3 of the state’s four-level, color-coded public health advisory response system to the coronavirus pandemic, face masks or coverings are now mandatory inside businesses and public places, and outside in crowded areas. A Level 3—or “red”— designation means “very high exposure and spread.” In compliance with the order, masks are now required at St. Andrew’s. If you don’t have a mask, or left yours at home, we have disposable masks available for you.

Prayers for the ChurchAnglican Church in North America: Archbishop Henry Ndukuba, his wife Angela, and the bishops, clergy, and people of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion).

The first Anglican mission (from the Church of England) to Nigeria took place in 1842. By 1864, Samuel Crowther, a former slave, was elected as the first black bishop in the Anglican Communion. The Church in the area grew sufficiently that, in 1951, the independent Province of West Africa was established with dioceses in Nigeria, Ghana, Sierra Leone, Gambia and Guinea. There were initially two Nigerian dioceses in the Province. Those two grew to 16 and, in 1979, the Nigerian dioceses separated from the Province of West Africa to form the Province of Nigeria. The 1990s was a decade of expansion for the Church, with the establishment of 27 full dioceses and 10 missionary dioceses.

The Church has continued to grow, adding theological colleges and universities, training evangelists and missionaries, establishing social welfare programs, hospitals, clinics, secondary schools and cottage industries.

Rapid growth continued and, as of 2012, there were 14 archbishops heading 14 internal ecclesiastical provinces (one of those archbishops is elected Primate, as the current Primate was in March 2020) and 161 dioceses. Baptized Anglicans are reported to number over 18 million. Terrorists have wreaked havoc in the country, especially in the northern dioceses and their depredations have been curbed by the government only in recent years. (Sources: Church of Nigeria website; Wikipedia.)

Please pray especially for peace, freedom from terrorism, and ongoing evangelism.

Diocese of the Great Lakes: Fr. Sean Templeton, Deacon Mark Hottel, Fr. Joshua Ajayi, and the people of Lakewood Anglican, Lakewood, Ohio.

Parish Cycle of Prayer: Polly Lindemann; Pat Linder; members of our parish family who may be traveling this summer; and our Greeting Card Ministry.

Midweek prayer service resumesThe Midweek Prayer Service is back on the calendar! All are welcome to attend this service, which is held in the Sanctuary at noon every Wednesday. Prayer is offered with special intention for our parish, the city, the state, the nation and the world, as well as for individual prayer needs.

Those attending the service on Wednesday are asked to maintain recommended guidelines posted at the church for social distancing, and are asked to wear face masks and to sanitize their hands upon entering and leaving the building.

While we’ve been on hiatus from our regular schedule of services and activities, members of the St. Andrew’s Prayer Ministries have been praying from their homes at noon on Wednesdays. If you’re unable to come out for the services on Wednesday, you may wish to continue this practice.

The Wednesday service follows the order of service for Midday Prayer, which begins on Page 33 of the Book of Common Prayer. You may download a copy of the BCP from the “St. Andrew’s E-Net” group on the Member Connection, or from bcp2019.anglicanchurch.net.

P ilgrims to the Holy Land from St. Andrew’s were privileged last summer to visit the archaeological site of historic Magdala, hometown of Mary Magdalene,

whose feast day is celebrated in the Church worldwide on July 22. Located near present-day Migdal on the western coastline of the Sea of Galilee, the site unearthed a first century synagogue, where Jesus is almost certain to have taught.

Excavation at the site began in 2009, when construction began on what was to be a retreat center for pilgrims to the Holy Land. While excavation at the site continues, Phase One of the development of Magdala—the Duc In Altum spiritual retreat center—has been completed. Duc In

Altum, which in Latin means “draw into the deep,” takes its name from Luke 5:4 where Jesus instructs Simon Peter to “launch into the deep” or “put out into deep water.”

The Encounter Chapel in the Duc In Altum features a large mural of the encounter between Jesus and the hemorrhaging woman from Mark 5:25-29 who said, “If I touch even his garments, I will be made well.” The woman is often associated with Mary Magdalene, who is identified in Scripture as the woman from whom Jesus expelled seven demons. (Mark 16:9; Luke 8:2)

Mary Magdalene, first witness to the Resurrection, is also referred to as “the first apostle,” as Christ commissioned her to tell the good news of his resurrection to the disciples.

At left, the first century synagogue at Magdala; above, the Magdala Stone found inside the synagogue, which depicts the oldest carved image of the Second Temple’s seven-branched menorah ever found. The logo for Magdala is taken from a rosette on the top of the stone. Its symbolic meaning has not yet been established, but the 12 petals could relate to a number of biblical traditions and its prominence on the stone indicates it is certainly of great significance.

Above, the Encounter Chapel in the Duc In Altum spiritual retreat center, the floor of which is that of the original first century marketplace of the Magdala port, which at the time was a thriving fish town.
