Christmas Memorial Gifts

We’ll be encouraging members to consider special gifts for the congregation’s ministries as we publish our annual booklet of Memorial and Honorific dedications.

Please try to submit your forms as early as you can so that we will have lots of time to prepare the booklet.

The form will specify CCM because of the increasing need for assistance to local needy households, but you may simply write in any cause you’d like to bless through the church instead.

Prayer Ventures

These petitions are offered as guides to prayer for the global, social and outreach ministries of the church. Thank you for your continued prayers for the life and mission of this church.

1 World AIDS Day Remember in your prayers the people in the Caribbean and eastern U.S. struggling to recover from the devastation and loss of life caused by the storms of Hurricane Sandy. 2 First Sunday of Advent O Lord, give us eyes to see the signs of your presence in the world. Help us to prepare our lives and our homes to re-ceive Jesus who is the light of the world. Amen. 3 Pray for Wendolyn and Eric Trozzo, ELCA missionaries serving in seminary education in Malaysia. 4 Pray for the work of ELCA Disaster Response that ELCA members will give generously to provide help where needed to those affected by the damage caused by Hurricane Sandy. 5 Pray for ELCA Young Adults in Global Mission volunteer Andrea Hamer, who is spending a year working with youth in Argentina. 6 Nicholas, Bishop of Myra, died around 342 Remember the 16 first-year ELCA seminary students who recently received full-tuition scholarships from the ELCA Fund for Leaders and give thanks that God’s work will be glorified through their calling. 7 Pray for Joseph Helgeson, an ELCA missionary in Tisovec, Slovakia, where he is a teacher. 8 Pray for the Basel Christian Church of Malaysia, which marked its 130th anniversary in November. The church of 120 congregations hosts an ELCA seminary professor and an ELCA Young Adults in Global Mission country program. 9 Second Sunday of Advent Loving God, fill us with your Spirit and help us transform our lives and our communities. Give us the peace of knowing that you came to share our human life and redeem us for the sake of love. We ask these things in the name of Jesus. Amen. 10 Pray for the Rev. Kevin Jacobson, an ELCA missionary in Paramaribo, Suriname, where he is serving in the areas of leadership development and parish ministry. 11 Pray for the Rev. Philip and Lou Marie Knutson, ELCA missionaries in Cape Town, South Africa, where they are re-gional representatives for Southern Africa. 12 Pray that the world will not forget and will continue to aid the people suffering in Guatemala after an earthquake on Nov. 7 killed dozens. 13 Remember in your prayers Ashley Debilzen, an ELCA Young Adults in Global Mission volunteer in Nyirtelek, Hunga-ry. 14 Pray for the six hospitals in East Jerusalem, including The Lutheran World Federation’s Augusta Victoria Hospital, that are facing difficulties because of the Palestinian Authority’s financial crisis. Foreign aid for the Palestinian Authority has been reduced, directly affecting the work and resources of the hospitals and endangering the lives of patients, ac-cording to the head of Augusta Victoria Hospital. 15 Pray for the Rev. Anne Langerak, an ELCA missionary in San José, Costa Rica, who is serving in parish ministry. 16 Third Sunday of Advent God of the nations, we give you thanks for the Christian communities in India, Maldives, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Give them strength to be witnesses to your love and peace. We lift up to you the companion relationships among the South Andhra Lutheran Church of India and the ELCA Northeastern Minnesota Synod, and the Andhra Evangelical Lutheran Church and the ELCA Northwestern Minnesota Synod. 17 Remember Erik Grayvold, who is spending a year in Jerusalem/West Bank as an ELCA Young Adults in Global Mis-sion volunteer. 18 Pray for the children among the 50,000 people in the Kakuma Refugee Camp in northwestern Kenya – and the ELCA World Hunger work in the camp – that the children’s dreams of a better life will be realized. 19 Pray for the Rev. Tessa and Jon Leiseth, ELCA missionaries in Haymarket, South Africa. They are coordinators for the ELCA Young Adults in Global Mission volunteers in South Africa. 20 Katharina von Bora Luther, renewer of the church, died 1552 Pray for Kathryn and William Fredell as they continue their work as teachers and serving as ELCA missionaries in Brati-slava, Slovakia. 21 Pray and give thanks for the live-saving and renewing health care provided by the Arusha Lutheran Medical Centre in Arusha, Tanzania, and the ELCA missionaries who serve there. Many of the patients are children with physical deformi-ties. 22 Pray for Kate Griewisch as she spends a year in Madagascar as an ELCA Young Adults in Global Mission volunteer teaching English.

Christmas is about sharing

the good things God gives,

most especially the Christ Child,

the greatest gift of all.

At this special time of year we want to remem-

ber those who do so much for us throughout

the year here at St. Andrew’s. To show our

staff how very much we appreciate all that

they are and all that they do, we will again

present each of them with a monetary gift. If

you would like to make a donation for this gift,

please give your check (made out to St. An-

drew’s with “Staff Christmas” on the memo

line) to Doris Houston, or leave it in the church

office in an envelope addressed to Doris.

Giving Tree Requests

Would you like to make a unique dedicated gift to the congregation’s ministries? The Giving Tree display in the Fellowship Hall lists items of value to our programs but ‘out of reach’ for our budget. Sometimes members and friends have chosen to bless us with the purchase of one of these ‘fruit’ for the symbol of our Giving. A symbol repre-senting each gift will be created and posted on the Tree whenever we get a new dona-tion to rejoice in.

The following suggestions have been submitted to the Office, some by parish staff and some by others.

Paschal candle: The Paschal Candle we use for Baptisms and Memorial Services, as well as the 40 days of Easter, is due for replacement this year. In the past, this candle has been given as a memorial gift and listed either in the Christmas or Easter booklets for dedicated special offerings. The cost is approximately $ 200.00. Pastor Fritz can assist with the choice of the right kind of candle for our use.

Socket set for church toolbox. We have been blessed with the gift of a toolbox, residing in the Office for use on site by volunteers at work. At present it’s supplied with screwdrivers, hammer and tape measure. We think an inexpensive socket set would be useful, as would some other items. Again, you can speak to Pastor Fritz for suggestions.

NRSV pulpit Bibles for Lectern and Pulpit. Our sanctuary Bibles are in decent condition, but they are ag-ing and they are out-of-date as translations (they’re “RSV”). New volumes would cost a substantial amount in the size required for use in our worship, but would make a meaningful contribution to the future worship life of the Church. Ada Smith can help research the available pulpit versions of the edition we would need.

New Office Chair for Pastor. Seems the one he is currently using is in need of replacement with one that can give him a bit more support. And we all want to support our Pastor! Contact Chris Connor if you want to help with this item.

Men in Mission Christmas Dinner

The annuall LMM Christmas Party will be held on Sunday, Dec 9 at 5:30pm in the Fellowship Hall. Please note the date change from Sat-urday to SUNDAY night. This year’s event will again feature a meal of steak or chicken (your choice) and lots of fellowship and fun. The ‘gift exchange’ game will add excitement and suspense to the evening and

everyone is asked to bring an interesting gift of approximately $5 value for the game.

All members of St. Andrew’s and their guests are invited and reservations are

needed. Cost for the meal is $8.50 per per-son and may be paid at the door. Please get a reservation slip at church or call the

church office 322-2981 no later than Wednesday, Dec 5th at 2pm.

If you elected to have your compli-mentary 8X10 sent to the church for you to pick up, you can do so

now. The portraits are available in the Church Office, which will be

open on Sundays as well as week-days Monday through Thursday. Your photo is in a marked box, in its own envelope with your name

on it.

THANKS for taking part!

Women in Religion

The Women in Religion discussion group will not meet in December.

The group will reconvene on Sunday, January 6th at 4 pm in Fellowship Hall. The

reading for discussion will be Part 3, pages 167-230, in Mighty Be Our Powers, by

Leymah Gbowee.

Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, president of Liberia, has said of the peacemaking work which Gbowee has done

in her native Liberia: “Leymah bore witness to the worst of humanity and helped bring Liberia out of

the dark. Her memoir is a captivating narrative that will stand in history as testament to the power

of women, faith and the spirit of our great country.”

At the November meeting of Women In Religion twenty-one women of different faith groups joined

in the ongoing discussion of Gbowee’s book. Women of all faith groups are invited to participate in

Women in Religion. For more information about the book and the group, contact Mary Theusen at

327-9551.

Got Questions about the Budget for 2013?

Members of the Finance Committee and Congregation Council

will be on hand in Newton Hall on the morning of the Congrega-

tion’s Annual Meeting to offer informal conversation about the de-

tails of the Budget Proposal (mailed out earlier in November).

This will not be a congregational meeting, of course, but a chance

to get questions answered before the meeting starts in the sanctu

ary at 10:45. We’ll be in Newton Hall beginning around 10:00am.

This is your January newsletter!!!!! You’ll find calendars for January AND December in this edition of the

Anchor, and our best effort to include important announcements about up-

coming events in the New Year. The office and volunteers won’t have

time for a standard edition until so late in January we thought it best to

do it this way. Some of you will also receive it by e=mail.

Let us know how you like that!

Mark Your Calendar: February 9 One-Day Retreat March 1 Church Women United World Day

of Prayer

From the President's Desk As we come to the end of the 25

th anniversary

year of WELCA, I have been thinking how the St. Andrew's Women of the ELCA have been living out the theme of the NC Statewide Organ- ization: “Sisters Celebrate! Renew* Re-spond* Rejoice”. We have renewed by studying the scriptures and praying in our circles each month and join-ing others for retreats, gatherings, and commu-nity services of prayer, worship and praise. We have responded by collecting UPC codes for Crossmore School, Collecting can tabs for Ronald McDonald House, giving items and money for 21 personal care kits for Lutheran World Relief, expressing care and concern for bereaved, hospitalized, and home-bound mem-bers of the St. Andrew's congregation, working with community churches during World Day of Prayer and World Community Day, giving gen-erously to the Thanksoffering and to the Family Care Center at the spring and fall general meet-ings and to the Pennies for Hope Project offer-ing for NC ELCA mission congregations and SAWC's (Synodically Authorized Worshipping Communities). We have rejoiced with Chris-tian sisters from our circles, our conference, our state; and in 2014, hopefully many of us will have the opportunity to rejoice with Christian sisters from all over the country in the Ninth Tri-ennial Gathering that will be held in Charlotte. We rejoiced when we heard the inspiring mes-sage given by Katie Fritz, a daughter of the con-gregation, on Women's Sunday and heard the beautiful music sung by the Youth Girls Choir at our General Meeting; and we rejoiced as we listened to stories and saw items from times past of St. Andrew's women's organizations down through the past 109 years. It surely has been a wonderful year of celebration, and I know we all are looking with great anticipation to 2013 to continue the renewing, responding,
