Arise, shine; for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you. For darkness shall

Dear People of St. Andrew’s,

The New Year’s revelry is over and it is time for the Christmas credit card hangover to begin. For many

churches, including our own, this is the season of annual meetings, a pause to get some business of the

church done before Lent arrives on February 13th. In liturgical time, we will be in the season of Epiph-

any. This is not a big, pew-filling time like Christmas and Easter, but Epiphany deserves its due. The

events and symbols of the season in this year’s Epiphany Gospel readings include the magi following a

star to the Christ child, the baptism of Jesus, and the miracle at the Cana wedding. It’s all a celebration

of the manifestation of the incarnation.

Epiphany is a Greek word, which was in common use before Jesus’ birth. It meant ‘appearance’ or

‘manifestation.’ Epiphany could refer to the appearance of dawn, or an enemy in war. In religious

terms, it refers to a manifestation of the god to a worshipper, or seeing the power of a god in action. In

the first Greek version of the Old Testament, called the Septuagint, epiphany was used to refer to a

manifestation of the God of Israel.

The Greeks believed that all creativity flowed from divine insight. Music, art, poetry, and even mathe-

matical ideas flowed from the appearance of muses who unexpectedly imbued creative energy upon hu-

mans. All creative genius was seen as being touched by God in some way.

It is helpful to keep this original sense of the Greek word in our Christian celebrations of Epiphany. As

we celebrate the wonders of the Word becoming flesh and dwelling among us, the real point of it all is

that we, in some way, are touched by God’s spirit. In Epiphany, we see God indwelling in Jesus, so that

Christ may dwell in us. The Epiphany (capital ‘E’) relates to our experiences of epiphany (small ‘e’).

Read and ponder the Gospel texts during this short ‘green’ season and watch and listen for the surpris-

ing epiphanies that happen in our common lives. As the wise men brought gifts to the Christ child, in

what ways do wise men and women touch our lives with unexpected Christ-like wisdom? Do we find

God speaking in our dreams showing us the star to follow, or warning us against the wiles of the

Herods of our times? As Jesus knew the love of God in his baptism, do baptismal waters still refresh our

souls and immerse us again in divine love? As Jesus’ true nature was revealed at the wedding in Cana,

can we find epiphanies and joyful celebrations within our own intimate relationships? Where do the

poor hear good news preached to them today? Where are the captives set free? Where is sight restored?

Will the works and words of Jesus be fulfilled in our Sunday worship?

May Christ shine through you during these dark winter days. Have a happy and bright Epiphany!

Yours In Christ,

The Rev. John Reese

Page 4 The Call

Jeannie Borsch: Jeannie is a lifelong Episcopalian. She strengthened her ties to the church when she married Ben, the son of an Episcopal priest, now the retired Bishop of the Diocese of Los Angeles. She and Ben began attending St. Andrew’s in the fall of 1991 and became members shortly thereafter. It has been their spiritual home for over 20 years. They have many great friends at St. Andrew’s. In 2008, Jeannie and Ben were blessed by their adoption of their wonderful daughter Emily, now nearly 5. She was baptized at St. Andrew’s and truly

considers it “her” church. Jeannie served on the vestry in the mid-1990s, including one year as Treasurer. Over her years at St. Andrew’s she has sung in the choir and served on the Worship and Music, the Christian Education, and the Out-reach Committees. She was part of the leadership group that ran the Capital Campaign to buy the former “Western Un-ion” building, which now houses our beautiful Parish Hall, offices, and classrooms. She also co-founded Pretty Awesome Christian Kids (P.A.C.K.), a youth group for kids ages 7-10, and, with Ben, volunteered as leader of the Middle School/Senior High Youth Group for over 10 years. Jeannie has been a Sunday School teacher for 3-5-year-olds, 4th and 5th grade, and Senior High. She is currently one of the teachers of the Middle School class. Jeannie intends to continue serving St. Andrew’s in whatever capacity she is called to do. She would be very pleased to represent the people of St. Andrew’s as a member of the vestry.

Chris Capsambelis: Chris has been an Episcopalian for over 35 years. Coincidentally, his first parish was also

named St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in New Kensington, PA where he grew up. When he moved to Flor-ida in 1989, he became a member of St. Anne of Grace in Seminole where his wife, Julie, and he were mar-ried 21 years ago. When they moved their family of three boys to the gulf beaches where they lived for 10 years, they made Calvary Episcopal in Indian Rocks Beach their home. In 2008, Julie and Chris moved to

downtown Tampa and once again became a member of a parish named for St. Andrew. They regularly attend the 8:00am service and they can usually be seen sitting in the pews in the Chapel of the church with one of their sons, Billy, an Iraq War veteran confined to a wheelchair. For the past two years, Chris has served as a Lay Eucharistic Minister. Profession-ally, Chris was a police sergeant for ten years and spent another ten years training police officers in both Pennsylvania and Florida. Currently, he is an Associate Professor of Criminology at the University of Tampa where he has been employed for the past 17 years. Chris also volunteers his time with the Tampa Police Department, having logged nearly 1000 hours over the past 4 years. Chris has a Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, a Master of Arts degree in Criminology from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Measurement and Statistics from the University of South Florida. In addition to Billy, Chris and Julie have two other sons. Matthew, their oldest son, resides in New York City and works in the hotel industry, but his first passion is opera and he is hoping to someday have a singing career. Matt has sung in Episcopal choirs in Los Angeles, Dallas, and New York. Their youngest son, Christopher, has followed in his Dad’s footsteps and serves as a deputy in the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office. Chris would be honored to serve on our vestry.

Charles Caro: Charles is a retired software company executive who has been a member at St. Andrew’s since 1986. He served four years in the US Army Security Agency both in the US and overseas, and he is a Viet-nam Era Veteran. His name is on the St. Andrew’s Vietnam Veterans plaque. Charles graduated from high school in Panama City, and moved to Tampa after being honorably discharged from the service to complete his BA with a major in Social Science Interdisciplinary at the University of South Florida. He also earned an MA in Political Science with a concentration in International Relations and Comparative Politics from

USF. Charles is a Commissioned Stephen Minister as a part of St. Andrew’s first group of Stephen Ministers, and has served as a Licensed Eucharistic Visitor (LEV). Since becoming a member at St. Andrew’s, Charles has served as a mem-ber of the Diocesan Migration Ministry Committee for 8 years where he was a part of a committee responsible for placing nearly 300 refugees with sponsored churches within the Diocese. The refugees came from Vietnam, South Africa and the Balkans. He also served for 2 years on the Diocesan Scouting Committee. Charles served as a Director on the Board and Treasurer of the Council of Downtown Churches for 8 years. At St. Andrew’s Charles has been active as an usher with 9 years as the Head Usher for the family service and a decade as Head Usher at the 8:0am service. Charles has been active in other St. Andrew’s ministry roles, including chairman of the Stewardship and Outreach Committees, member of the Worship Committee, catcher for the St. Andrew’s Men’s Softball Team and St. Andrew’s Co-Ed Softball Team, and many years as a member of the St. Andrew’s Handbell Choir. For the past decade Charles has been appointed as the Head Teller for the Annual Vestry Election. He has also been involved in several special projects, including painting the first floor interior of the Parish Hall, assisting with the unloading of the Church organ from the truck that brought it to Tampa, creating a custom software application for St. Andrew’s cookbook, acting as a volunteer docent at the brass rub-bings exhibitions, and his son Mark’s Eagle Project, which was to clean out and clean up the Western Union Building after it was purchased by the Church. This involved moving literally tons of material, treasures and trash from the upper floors of the building and cleaning the basement and upper floor restrooms, which saved the Church thousands of

Beyond St. Andrew’s, Charles is on the support team of St. Paul’s Catholic Church In-Betweeners Job Support Group, and as an active adult Scouter, Charles served as a Scoutmaster, Roundtable Commis-sioner and District Commissioner where he earned several awards, including the Award of Merit, Distinguished Commis-sioner Award, and Scouter’s Key. Charles lives near Citrus Park Mall with his son.

Martha Cobb: Martha and her family have been members of St. Andrew’s for the past fifteen years. She has met some of her dearest friends through all the various programs that St. Andrew’s has offered and that moved her to become very involved with supporting programs in the church. Martha has served on the Vestry once and has been passionate about the Outreach Program for the past 10 years. Her passion for youth was very im-portant to developing youth programs at the church. She led the PACK (Pretty Awesome Christian Kids) Pro-gram for pre-teens and has taught Sunday School and participated in Vacation Bible School for several years.

Martha believes that families who are actively involved with church develop a strong sense of commitment in every as-pect of their lives. If elected to the vestry, she would like to develop family programs and get more families involved with Sunday School and all of the wonderful programs that St. Andrew’s has to offer.

Richard Ferlita: Richard was born and raised in Tampa. He is a graduate of Mercer University in Macon, GA.

Upon completion of college he served four years in the United States Air Force, including a tour of duty in Vietnam. After completing his military service he settled in San Francisco, where he lived for 26 years. He worked in the credit union industry during his residency in San Francisco. In 1991 he returned to Tampa and was hired as the Regional Director for GTE Federal Credit Union. Richard has been an active member at Saint Andrew’s for many years. During the past two years he has become part of the acolyte team under the direction

of Fred Waters. He is also an office volunteer in the church office.

Barbara Jones: Barbara was born in Charlotte, NC. She attended Meredith College in Raleigh, NC graduating with a BA in organ and education. She taught for six years before enrolling at USF, where she earned a Master’s degree in Guidance. She served as a guidance counselor for several years before her husband’s job took them to Dade City. Barbara lived there for 40 years, raising 2 children and serving as organist and choir director at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church for 33 years. She also served 3 terms on the vestry there. Barbara retired on December 31, 2011 and moved to Tampa in May. She changed her membership to St. Andrew’s where her daughter, Lara

Tibbals, and her family worship. She attends the 9:30 Sunday Bible class, has assisted with coffee hour, and recently ac-companied the children as they rehearsed for the Christmas Pageant. She would consider it an honor and privilege to serve on the vestry.

Rachel Schnabel: Rachel was born into a military family and grew up in many places coast to coast in the US.

The granddaughter of an Episcopal priest, Rachel spent much of her life in Episcopal churches, schools, and programming. She is currently involved in St. Andrew's handbell choir, Outreach Committee, and is a leader for the High School & College program. She was also chosen to be the Deanery of Tampa's Mentor for the Di-ocesan Youth Council and has worked at the Diocese of Southwest Florida's summer camp. In her secular life,

Rachel is a full time student at USF studying Economics with a minor in Business Administration. She also works part time in the Valrico area, and spends time with her extended family every week. Her spiritual gifts assessment shows strong gifts in the areas of hospitality, service, and administration which would be used cheerfully and prayerfully to advance the missions of St. Andrew's Church.

Scott T. Silverman: Scott was born February 3, 1968 in Pittsburgh, PA but grew up in Tampa attending Berkeley Preparatory School from third grade through high school. Scott served as an acolyte at St. Andrew's his senior year, and then went to college at Washington and Lee University in Lexington, VA. Scott gradu-ated with a B.A. in Politics and was a two-year letter winner on the football team. Upon graduation, Scott worked on Capitol Hill for Congressman William Clinger from Pennsylvania for a year, before attending law

school at Washington University in St. Louis, where he was an Editor of the Law Review and graduated Order of the Coif. Scott returned to Tampa to practice law after obtaining his J.D. in 1994. Currently, Scott is Of Counsel with Akerman Senterfitt in the firm's Labor and Employment Law Group. He has received the highest rating of AV by Martindale-Hubbell Law Directory, is Board Certified by the Florida Bar in Labor and Employment Law and has been recognized as a top attorney in Florida by Best Lawyers in America, Chambers USA, Super Lawyers Magazine, and Florida Trend's Legal Elite Magazine. Scott is co-chair of the Hillsborough County Bar Association's Labor and Employment Section and is co-chair of the Florida Bar's Advanced Labor Topics. Scott is blessed with two sons, Justin (13) and William (10), who are acolytes. Scott is a LEM at St. Andrew's and has been an active member for the past 3 years. Scott looks forward to serv-ing on the vestry, where he can utilize his skills and experience to help meet St. Andrew's needs.

Thursday Morning Bible Study

We will resume our study of Luke’s Gospel using

Bishop N.T. Wright’s study guide on January 10.

The schedule for the remainder of Luke is as fol-

lows:

Jan. 10—Luke 15: The Parables of the Lost

Jan. 17—Luke 16: Faithfulness and Stewardship

Jan. 24—Luke 17: Faith and the Kingdom

Jan. 31—Luke 18: Humility and Trust

Feb. 7—–Luke 19: The Triumphal Entry

Feb. 1—–Luke 20:1- 21:4: Debates with Jesus

Feb. 21—Luke 21:5- 38: Watching for the Son of

Man

Feb. 28—Luke 22: Celebration and Betrayal

Mar. 7— Luke 23: The Crucifixion

Mar.14—Luke 24: The Resurrection

We will then jump immediately to a study of the

Acts of the Apostles, again using the study guide

of Bishop Wright. Luke writes the Acts as a se-

quel to his Gospel and it is appropriate and

natural to follow one on the heels of the other.

So, here we go!

Mar. 21—Acts 1—Luke’s Story Continues

Mar. 28—Acts 2:1-41— Wind and Fire

Apr. 4— Acts 2:42- 3:26—Restoration and Re-

freshment

Apr. 11— Acts 4:1-31—Clash of Loyalties

Apr. 18— Acts 4:32- 5:42—The New Community

Apr. 25— Acts 6—The Family Widens

This class, facilitated by Alice Prucha, meets in

Room 302 on the third floor of the Parish Build-

ing.

DEANERY MEETING: We will host the

kick off Deanery Meeting for the Domini-

can Republic Mission trips on January

10th at 7:00pm in the Parish Hall. Anyone

interested in this mission experience should

plan on attending one of the Deanery meet-

ings to find out just what the obligations are.

If you have questions, contact Jim Morgan

at [email protected].

Sunday Mornings at 9:30am:

24 Hours That Changed the World

The aim of this Lenten study is to help us better

understand the events that occurred during the

hours of Maundy Thursday and Good Friday, to

see more clearly the theological significance of

Christ’s suffering and death, and to reflect upon

the meaning of these events in our lives. We will

utilize a DVD, 24 Hours That Changed the

World: Video Journey, in which Pastor Adam

Hamilton retraces the steps of Jesus onsite in

the Holy Land, bringing the last 24 hours to

life. Each session will examine the geographic

and historical setting of that day’s fateful events,

reflect on Jesus’ death through discussions of

Scripture and other sources, and help us see our-

selves in the story, considering how the failures

and weaknesses of all of us mirror those of a Ju-

das or John, a Peter or a Pilate. Adam Hamilton

is Senior Pastor of the United Methodist Church

of the Resurrection in Leawood, Kansas. He is

the author of several books, including 24 Hours

That Changed the World.

Here is the line-up:

Feb 17: The Last Supper

Feb 24: The Garden of Gethsemane

Mar 3: Condemned by the Righteous

Mar 10: Jesus, Barabbas, and Pilate

Mar 17: The Torture and Humiliation of the

King

Mar 24: The Crucifixion

This class, facilitated by the Rector, will meet in

Room 302 (the Library) on the third floor of the

Parish Building.

Sunday mornings at 9:30am

The Wired Word, facilitated by the Rector, exam-

ines a current event from the previous week and

analyzes it through the use of Biblical refer-

ences. Come and see how Scripture can help us

make sense of what’s happening in the world to-

day. This course meets through February 10.

This class, facilitated by the Rector, meets in

Room 302 on the third floor of the Parish Build-

ing.

A New Christmas CD by Our Choir

Now available! The Saint Andrew's Choir's latest CD, "Christmas at

Saint Andrew's," features Christmas music old and new, including rarely

heard compositions by Billings, Holst, Schnabel, Sargent, and others. Also

incuded are old favorites such as "Ding, dong! merrily on high," "Zither

Carol," and "O come, all ye faithful." Guest organist Simon Morley from

Saint John's, Tampa, provides flawless accompaniment as well as three or-

gan solos. His improvisation on the French carol "Il est né le divin enfant"

will knock your socks off! Sample tracks will be posted on our website soon.

Members of the choir will be selling the CDs after services for the next few weeks; copies will also be

available from the church office. The price is $20.00 each, and the proceeds will help fund the choir's

trip to England in August 2014 for a week as choir-in-residence at Winchester Cathedral. Checks may

be made payable to "St. Andrew's Church," with "Choir Trip Fund" on the memo line. If you wish to

receive your CD by mail, please add $3.00 for the first copy and $1.00 for each additional copy.

LENTEN SERIES: The Other Six Deadly Sins

We hear a lot about lust these days, but lust is only one -- and according to many theologians, the

least important -- of the seven deadly sins. In this series we'll explore the other six: what they are,

why they're important, how they manifest themselves in our lives (often in surprising ways), and

what spiritual disciplines are available to combat them. We will also talk about identifying these sins

through self-examination and about prayers of confession, including the practice of sacramental con-

fession. Our purpose is not to wallow in guilt, but to open ourselves to God's transforming grace.

Feb. 12: Gluttony: Is God upset about the pancake supper?

Feb. 19: Avarice: Is there anything wrong with wanting just a little more?

Feb. 26: Sloth: A case of the spiritual blahs

Mar. 5: Wrath: Holy emotion or hellish passion?

November Vestry Meeting Highlights

Rector’s Report:

Air Conditioner – Mike Charles from CGM was present to speak to the Vestry about the current

A/C problems, history of the A/C systems and possible solutions. Available options: move all the

equipment up to the roof; move the second floor equipment to an area behind the Children’s

Chapel; or fix/reinforce the existing roof structure on the second floor to accommodate the units

currently there, so that they can be serviced safely in place. A discussion was held regarding ap-

proval of the $1,000 expense of having CGM prepare the drawings they proposed. A motion was

made to ask CGM to draw up the plans, provided they agree we would own these plans when com-

pleted, and to pay their $1,000 fee from the parking lot funds. Mr. Bedell opposed the motion; the

remainder of the vestry approved the motion.

Foundation – The Foundation Board met on 10/23 and decided to diversify into slightly more ag-

gressive mutual funds. In addition, the Foundation needs to incorporate as a 501(c)(3) corporation.

This will be researched with a trust attorney.

Outreach Turkey Pack – This was held in the Parish Hall on Saturday November 17, 2012. Many

completed “packs” were assembled.

Vestry Nominating Committee – Has begun meeting and contacting potential candidates. The

committee members this year are: Mr. Sanders, Mr. Fowler, Mrs. Coleman, Mr. Getz, Mrs. Kent,

Mrs. Lawless and Mr. Crofoot.

Stewardship – The second mailer went out on November 8th. The third mailer will go out on No-

vember 29th. Outstanding names will once again be given to Vestry members for telephone follow-

up. As of today, we have 116 pledges totaling $247,000.

Stained Glass Windows – Three new windows are in the works: The Crucifixion and The Resurrec-

tion, both sponsored by Troy & Jean Brown, and Adam & Eve in the Garden, sponsored by Steve

and Arlene Tonnesen. These will be completed by the end of the year. The windows remaining are:

Moses and the Ten Commandments, David and Goliath, and Jesus as a Child in the Temple. Any-

one interested in sponsoring one of these ($6,400 each) should contact the rector.

Gray Sanders – Senior Warden Report: Plans for landscaping were submitted to the City. The

City then requested different plants be incorporated into the plans. The plans were re-done and re-

submitted. The city has also requested a separate permit for irrigation. This has been submitted to

the landscaping company for completion. We hope it is completed and submitted to the city within the

next couple of weeks. Most of the new plants are in; however, some have to be replaced due to irriga-

tion failure. Out of the $23,000 proposed budget $5,500 has been spent to date.

The Vestry nominating committee will have a meeting tonight after the Vestry meeting.

Al Getz - Treasurer Report: Revenues for the month ending October 31st were again below budget

for the month. Budgeted revenues were $41,302.58 versus actual revenues of $26,994.59 for a short-

fall in projected revenues of $15,826.10. Total revenues year-to-date are: $331,435.96 versus budgeted

revenue of $413,025.80 for a year-to-date deficit of $81,859.84. Actual expenses for the month of Octo-

ber were $42,280.69 against budgeted expenses of $41,302.60; expenses were over budget by

$1,518.09. Actual year-to-date expenses are: $431,397.21 against anticipated expenses of $413,025.80.

Expenses year-to-date are over budget by $18,371,21.

Committee Reports:

OUTREACH – Jim Morgan: The Turkey Pack event was a great success. Angel Tree is coming up.

Angel Tree is requesting that gift cards be distributed this year. This is a new request on their part.

We will put stickers on the gift cards that say they cannot be used for anything other than gifts. Met-

ropolitan Ministries uses gift cards themselves to purchase turkeys; they don’t give the gift cards to

the families.
