Pa s to r ’ s P o s t i n g s Jesus says, “I do not call you servants any longer, because the
servant does not know what the master is doing; but I have called
you friends, because I have made known to you everything that I
have heard from my Father.” -John 15:15
One of the results of the social network revolution is
that terms like Facebook, MySpace, and LinkedIn are
now part of our regular speech. Also, thanks to
Facebook in particular, the word “friend” has been
transformed from a noun into a verb.
“John friended me and invited me to be a part of his part-time pro-hunting
vegan libertarian group.”
“I friended Sally the other day and she hasn’t stopped writing things on my
wall.”
These sentences would have been incomprehensible even 5 years ago. (To
some who aren’t part of Facebook, they still make no sense!)
And it wasn’t enough to make “friend” a verb, to make a “wall” something we
write on with a keyboard, to make “groups” something we belong to strictly
online. No, out of this already confusing lexicon, somehow the word “de-
friended” emerged. This is the dreaded step of removing someone from your
official “friend” list.
Maybe it’s because they keep posting eerie pictures of their recently deceased
pet, which is now a newly stuffed (dead) parakeet. Maybe it’s because they
keep insisting that you join their group called “Monkeys Punching Dinosaurs.”
Or maybe it’s because they keep grinding their political ax by posting messages
from “Politics in the Nation of India” on your wall.
Whatever the reason, “de-friending” someone means you’ll no longer hear from
them and they will no longer see any of you. The (online) friendship will be over.
Now imagine you are Jesus. And imagine that in a simple declarative sentence,
you “friended” every person who ever sought to serve you.
“You’re no longer my servants. Instead, I’m friending you.”
(Continued on page 3)
3
“The things I have said are now written out for you. I expect you to read my posts.
I’ve given you everything you need to know. It’s on your wall. Hello? R u there? R
we still friends?”
What would happen if we took Jesus “friending” us more seriously? What would
happen when his teachings about forgiving our enemies and walking the second
mile and blessing those who persecute us began popping up on our wall every day?
And how do we squeeze his messages into our day when posts are coming in from
the other 400 friends on our list?
Do we skim over Jesus’ posts on our wall? Do we ignore his invitations to join
groups that might matter to him? Do we sometimes act like we’ve “de-friended”
Jesus? And will it ever occur to Jesus after years of us paying too little attention to
his invitations, to “defriend” us?
Here’s hoping that you’ve responded to Jesus’ friend
request. Jesus wants to “friend” you. And through you,
Jesus wants to “friend” others as well. R u listening?
(Continued from page 2)
Pastor ChrisRev. Christopher Barrett, Pastor
Can you believe we're beginning another year of school? Where
did the summer go? The "lazy" days of summer are still with us
and most probably will remain throughout September. Buses
loaded with students once again remind us of the precious cargo they deliver to
the schools each day. Some of these children are in need of extra help. This is
where you can help. Giving one hour a week of your time helping a child whose
parents can't help at times is where you can come in. After retiring from
teaching high school seniors, I committed myself to once again helping students
who were having difficulty. There are many children in need. If you are
interested, let me know as we can organize a group from St. Andrews who aren't
already helping so we can place you with a child that is struggling who can
profit from your assistance. You will be the one who is blessed.
From the Lay Leader.. .
In Christ—Amen! Jennie Jennie Goodman, Lay Leader

Dear Church Family,
Below you will find an e-mail from my colleague, the Rev. Will Malambri,
about one way we may respond to the terrible devastation still affecting
parts of Alabama after the tornado. We have been invited to collaborate
with these two UM churches to form a volunteer team to help in the
ongoing work there. The details are below. If you are interested in being a
part of this effort, please contact me by email to [email protected] or
call the church office (843.766.1080)
Thanks, and God bless.
Pastor Chris
On April 27 and 28, 2011 parts of the
Southeast were devastated by tornados.
This was the worst tornado outbreak to hit
Alabama since 1932 and the second
deadliest tornado event in US history. 246
people died in Alabama alone. One of the
massive tornados had wind speeds of over
200 mph and stayed on the ground for 132
miles. This information was part of a recent SC Volunteers in Mission newsletter.
South Carolina United Methodists had a team of early responders in Alabama on May
2nd. Others have gone since. The need for help continues. St. James can be part of the
recovery.
There was initial interest in sending a team to help with recovery. I hope the interest
remains. Even though other emergencies have taken this disaster off the front page, it
remains a headline concern for the people of Fort Payne and other towns in Alabama.
A United Methodist Volunteers in Mission (UMVIM) Team from Wightman, UMC in
Prosperity, SC has invited us to join them in the recovery efforts. The majority of the
team will go to Fort Payne, AL (near Lookout Mountain and home on Country Music
group, Alabama) on Sunday, October 9th and return on Saturday, October 15th. The
team will sleep in a church facility on cots or air mattresses that the team will bring.
The work will be general reconstruction. Participant cost will include $100 donation to
the Alabama UMVIM relief work and some incidentals. Donations to offset the cost of
the trip are encouraged from those who cannot go, but would like to financially
support the mission. Prayers from all are requested.
There is a possibility for those who can’t be away an entire week to join us later in the
week and make it a long weekend of work. If you are in that situation, please let me
know immediately.
I’d like to know from any interested persons as quickly as possible, so we can begin
making plans. I hope you’ll help St. James reach out with love and kindness in
whatever way you can.

Dear Rev. Barrett, Mrs. Outlaw, & the Members of St. Andrews Parish:
On behalf of our Disaster Relief Team and our entire congregation,
thank you so much for your generous and heart-felt contributions to
the storm victims in our area. Meeting the needs of the people who
were devastated by the April storms will be an on-going ministry for
a long time, and donations like yours provide hope and
encouragement, as well as very much needed practical assistance,
for these folks who are trying to rebuild their lives.
We appreciate the time and efforts you put into your donation
gathering and preparation, and for both you and Harry’s willingness
to drive such a distance to be the hands and feet of Christ. We pray
for blessings on your congregation, and we’re thankful for you, our
fellow servants, as we work together for Him.
Thank you again and God bless!
In His Service,
Glenn Conner, Senior Pastor
Wren Miller, Associate Pastor
