St. Ann Parish Mission Statement We are called by a loving God

to make St. Ann of Lansing a Catholic community of faith. We are a family of diverse people with various ministries: healing the body and spirit, teaching of God and His love,

united in sacraments and prayer, reaching out to the extended community. With God’s revelation of Himself in Scripture as our guide,

we strive to grow in His Spirit and to fulfill the promise of Christ’s Kingdom.

Happy, healthy 2012! Where did 2011 go? I thought it would be neat to start the New Year on an “up” note.

What’s Up Doc? (Author unknown) There is a two-letter word that perhaps has more mean-ings than any other two-letter word, and that word is "up." It’s easy to understand "up," meaning toward the sky or at the top of the list, but why do we wake “up” in the morning?

At a meeting, why does a topic come "up?" Why do we speak "up," and why are the officers "up" for election, and why is it "up" to the secretary to write "up" a report?

We call "up" our friends. We brighten "up" a room and polish "up" the silver. We warm "up" the leftovers and clean "up" the kitchen.

We lock "up" the house and some guys fix "up" an old car.

At other times, the little word has extra-special meanings. People stir "up" trouble, line "up" for tickets, work "up" an appetite, and make "up" excuses.

To be dressed is one thing, but to be dressed "up" is spe-cial.

A drain must be opened "up" because it is stopped "up."

We open "up" a store in the morning, but we close it "up" at night. We seem to be pretty mixed "up" about "up."

To understand the proper uses of "up," look the word "up" in a dictionary. In a desk-sized dictionary, it takes "up" almost ¼ page―it really adds "up!"

If you are "up" to it, you might try building "up" a list of the many ways "up" is used. It will take "up" a lot of your time, but if you don’t give "up," you may wind "up" with a hundred or more.

When it threatens to rain, we say it is clouding "up." When the sun comes out, we say it is clearing "up." If it doesn’t rain for a while, things dry "up."

One could go on, but I’ll wrap it "up." For now my time is "up," so it’s time to shut "up!”

Hope you have an "up" year and you are "up" and com-ing to Mass to celebrate our New Year and to thank God for his many blessings. Thanks to my "up" friend Dar-lene for sharing this "up" note with us all.

Serving Him together, and looking "up" to the New Year and God’s hand in it. Heads-"up!" Barb A.

Miss Me—But Let Me Go

When I come to the end of the road And the sun has set for me,

I want not rites in a gloom filled room. Why cry for a soul set free?

Miss me a little—but not too long And not with your head bowed low. Remember the love we once shared.

Miss me—but let me go.

For this is a journey that we all must take, And each must go alone.

It’s all a part of the Master’s plan, A step on the road to home.

When you are lonely and sick of heart Go to the Friend we know, And bury

your sorrows in doing good deeds. Miss me—but let me go.

In Loving Memory of Eleanore Puchalski Florence “Flo” Arnston

TRIP Notes

S]out Sun^[y February 5, 2012 10:30 a.m. Mass

Calling all parishioners, adults and youth who are

members of the Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, and Girl Scouts of America!

Please join us as we celebrate Scout Sunday and

continue into our second century of Scouting. This special mass is for all pack and troop members,

wherever you meet. ALL are welcome!

Additionally, we would like to recognize all parishioners who have achieved scouting’s highest awards of Eagle Scout and Gold Award. If you or someone you know has done so, please contact the Parish Office at 895-6700 with the scout’s name

and the year the achievement was earned.

Fundraising Update

The St. Ann Fundraising Committee would like to thank everyone who sup-ported our Christmas Wreath fundraiser by purchasing their live holiday greenery through us this year. We made $1,700.00, which will enable us to re-

place the old carpets in the kindergarten and preschool rooms with bright and clean new tile. Thanks again!

Also, thank you to everyone who purchased tamales in December, and to those who came out to help us make them. We spent two very festive days as an assembly line, steaming, spreading masa, filling and rolling to make 160 DOZEN tamales, and then Lena Martinez and her industrious crew of elves spent another entire day cooking those delicious little bundles so they were fresh and hot for pickup in time for Christmas. It was a lot of work, but we did have fun!

Our next meeting is Tuesday, January 24, 7:00 p.m. in the Teachers’ Lounge. Upcoming events we’ll be discussing include Pot of Gold in March and Ladies’ Night Out in April. Please think about joining us―we’re always in the market for some fresh input and ideas!

Ladies’ Night Out Saturday, April 21, 2012

6-11:30 p.m. St. Ann Parish Hall

Mark Your Calendars, and Think Spring!

Mrs. Villa and her 5th Grade class recently presented a Jesse Tree para-liturgy. During Advent, they studied the Old Testament stories that tell of Jesus’ ancestors, and each student created an ornament for the “family tree.” During the ceremony, they told the stories and related them symbolically before placing their ornaments on the Jesse Tree.

The 8th Grade team of Zena Omorogbe, Joseph Chmura and Katie Serba took first place in the fall semester of The Stock Market Game™ pro-gram’s online portfolio simulation. Under the direction of Mrs. Bonnie Hall, they beat out 154 other teams in our re-gion, increasing their original $100k cash to a final portfolio equity of $116,035, and out per-forming the S&P 500 for the same period by 7.28 percent.
