MERCY MOMENTS BY: DEACON TOM DRISCOLL “Pray for the living and the dead” is the seventh spiritual work of mercy. Praying is an essential element of Christian life. It is how we develop our relationship with God. While in prayer we make known our needs and wants, we learn, slowly but surely, in experiencing the answers to prayer - yes, no and not yet - that God knows us better than we know ourselves, and He desires for us only our best good. (Mt. 7:11.) This is why Jesus instructed us to pray always (Lk. 18:1), which St. Paul reiterated with his urgent advice to “pray without ceasing.” (1 Thess. 5:17.) We may not see the effects of our prayer every time, but we know from praying throughout life that prayer is effectual – it saves lives, averts war, converts hardened hearts and so much more. Prayer becomes a spiritual work of mercy when it is for others. Prayer for the living is our intercession on behalf of family and friends, and people we encounter in our daily lives, who are suffering through some need. Whether or not we have the expertise, wisdom or resources to assist directly, we can always pray for them, asking God to help them with the light they need to see through the darkness, doubt or confusion they are experiencing.

Prayer for the dead is equally efficacious, but has fallen out of favor for many in our time. Often, when someone dies, there are statements to the effect that the person is in heaven. However, this is not our faith. Sacred Scripture does not say that we go right to heaven. Each of us at death faces the particular judgment of Christ. (2 Cor. 5:10.) But, since Christ is Mercy embodied and our intercessor before the Father, though nothing impure may enter Heaven (Rev. 21:27), we pray with St. Paul that “God who has begun a good work in [them] bring it to completion.” (Phil. 1:6.) This state of completion is Purgatory, where “all who die in God's grace and friendship, but still imperfectly purified, are indeed assured of their eternal salvation; but after death they undergo purification, so as to achieve the holiness necessary to enter the joy of heaven.” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1030-1031.) For this reason, we intercede for them so that our prayer may be our atonement on their behalf, helping them toward heaven. Prayer for the living and the dead is our real-life experience, in the here and now, of life within the Communion of Saints. (Lumen Gentium, 49.)

Mercy Challenge for the week: Make your Father proud. Pray every day for family, friends, people in need, your dead and the souls in Purgatory, and let your family see you pray.
