LETTER FROM THE PASTOR Dear Parishioners:

Today we celebrate All Saints Day and Monday, November 2 is the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed, or "All Souls' Day." On that day, we not only remember our departed loved ones; we also pray for them. We assist them by our prayers and sacrifices so their purification in Purgatory may be completed and accomplished, and they may be granted kind admittance to the eternal, heavenly Kingdom of God. We refer to the souls in Purgatory as the "poor souls," but they are fortunate, because their entry into heaven is certain, although they must first undergo purification from all their worldly attachments and complete the temporal punishments for their sins. We believe that our prayers can hasten this process and so we pray for them in a special way on All Souls' Day. Let us pray for all of our dear departed loved ones, and also for all of the "poor souls," especially those who have no one else to pray for them.

This coming Saturday, November 7, Bishop Brennan will ordain ten

men to the permanent diaconate in an ordination ceremony to take place at St. Paul Church in Westerville. Among those to be ordained as deacons are two of our own parishioners of St. Andrew Parish: Dan Dowler and Victor Nduaguba. We are very proud of these men and are confident that they will serve the Church well as worthy deacons.

We congratulate Dan and Victor and offer our best wishes to them and their families on this happy occasion. And we also offer our prayers for a blessed and fruitful ministry as deacons. I am also very pleased to announce that Deacon Dowler will be assigned to the diaconal ministry right here at St. Andrew Parish. I look forward to his joining me, Fr. Ferguson, Fr. DeVille, and Deacon Berg on our ministerial team!

May God bless you all in this somber month of November, and may the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.

Thank you for your continued support. We are grateful for your generosity.

We encourage those still using envelopes to either place them in the baskets located near the exits on your way out after Mass, mail them to the parish office, or sign up for your bank’s online bill pay service (please use your envelope number as the “account” number). Send to St. Andrew Parish 1899 McCoy Rd. Columbus OH 43220.

St. Andrew Parish would like to thank the increasing number families who are currently giving electronically. You may not see these fellow parishioners place an envelope in the basket every week, but their consistent giving does not go unnoticed in our parish office. Not only does it allow us to process the contributions quickly, but no physical contact is required. Each month our parish receives a steady and predictable stream of income from those donors who have made the commitment to give to God first by having a designated contribution automatically transferred to our parish through our Online Giving Program. THOUGHTS FFOORR OOUURR PPAARRIISSHH CCHHIILLDDRREENN by “Jackie,” Fr. Ferguson’s Cat

Hi boys and girls! My name is “Jackie,” and as you know, I am Father Ferguson’s cat! Did you know that today and tomorrow are really special days for us Catholics? That’s right! Today is November 1, and it is called “All Saint’s Day”! And tomorrow is November 2, and that day is called “All Souls’ Day!”

These days remind us that we are not meant to be on this Earth forever. We are in this world on a journey to an even better place: Heaven! And everybody needs other people’s help to get there. Heaven is where we will be totally holy and united with God in joy! But that can be tough to get ready for. It’s not always easy to be holy and to resist temptation. I know. I’m a cat. I’m tempted all the time to do naughty things like scratch Father’s furniture, steal his tuna, or bite his friends. We all need help to be holy. The Saints are there to give us help and encouragement to grow in holiness. They are at the “finish line” of the journey to cheer us on by encouraging us to hang in there and keep growing in holiness. All we have to do is pray to them for help.

But WE can help others, too. We can help those who recently left this Earth (all the “Souls”) who are not quite yet in Heaven but “finishing up” getting ready for Heaven. Maybe they left the Earth with some minor sins, and those sins need to be cleaned before they can fully enter Heaven. So, we should help them by praying for them. Who are your favorite Saints from whom you can seek help to be holy? Who are some relatives or friends of your family who recently left this Earth, for whom you can pray to fully enter Heaven? Isn’t it great that

Jesus wants all of us in Heaven, and He wants all of us to help each other to get there? Let’s take these two great days – “All Saints’ Day” and “All Souls’ Day”and prepare for themost amazingexperience we canever imagine, evenbetter than eating amountain of tuna:the glories of life withGod in Heaven! Stayholy, and have a“purr” fect week!

WHY DO WE DO THAT?Catholic Life ExplainedQuestion:Why do some people receive Communion in the hand, while others have it put on the tongue? And is one better than the other?

Answer:Prior to the liturgical reforms that accompanied the Second Vatican Council, it was the universal practice that Catholics would receive communion “on the tongue,” meaning that the one receiving would allow the priest distributing communion to place the consecrated host on their outstretched tongue. At this time, only the priest celebrant (and, on special occasions, priests assisting at the Mass) was allowed to receive the Precious Blood.

Since 1977 (with the approval of the Holy See) the bishops of the United States have officially approved two equally valid options for receiving Holy Communion in Masses celebrated according to the Ordinary Form of the Mass. As the bishops’ statement Norms for Holy Communion Under Both Kinds states:

The communicant may choose whether to receive the Body of Christ in the hand or on the tongue. When receiving in the hand, the communicant should be guided by the words of St. Cyril of Jerusalem: “When you approach, take care not to do so with your hand stretched out and your fingers open or apart, but rather place your left hand as a throne beneath your right, as befits one who is about to receive the King. Then receive him, taking care that nothing is lost” (no. 41).

As we noted, both ways of receiving communion are equally valid in the United States and it is important that we always keep the instructions of the bishops in mind as we reflect on which method we might prefer.

DUE TO COVID 19 PRECAUTIONS, ALL COMMUNICANTS ARE ASKED TO RECEIVE HOLY COMMUNION IN THE HAND AS THIS METHOD POSES LESS RISK OF TRANSMISSSION OF THE VIRUS. YOUR COOPERATION IS APPRECIATED.

Did you know that in our country, compared to 60 years ago, there are 20,000 fewer priests and 129,000 fewer religious sisters? At the same time, the Catholic population has

grown steadily. During Vocation Awareness Week, please pray that young people in today’s society will hear and respond to God’s call. And do your part to encourage them to consider the priesthood and religious life.

In the Catholic tradition, responsible citizenship is a virtue. The responsibility to make political choices rests with each person and his or her properly formed conscience.

As bishops, we do not intend to tell Catholics for whom or against whom to vote. Our purpose is to help Catholics form their consciences in accordance with God's truth”. (#7 Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship)

Catholic voters are called to properly form their consciences in preparation for voting and for the continued advocacy for just laws and policies required after voting. This process should focus on moral principles, the defense of life, the needs of the weak, and the pursuit of the

common good. It requires constant prayer, understanding of Church teaching, and discernment that goes beyond campaign rhetoric and partisan politics.

This discernment should focus on a candidate’s consistency with moral principles, sincerity, integrity, and the ability to affect the policies that he or she promotes. It should also include seeking and verifying background information regarding a candidate’s stance on policy issues, and a consideration of those who would be directly impacted by such policies.

FORMING CONSCIENCES FOR FAITHFUL CITIZENSHIP: A CALL TO POLITICAL RESPONSIBILITY FROM THE CATHOLIC BISHOPS OF THE UNITED STATES PARAGRAPHS 34-37

Catholics often face difficult choices about how to vote. This is why it is so important to vote according to a wellformed conscience that perceives the proper relationship among moral goods. A Catholic cannot vote for a candidate who favors a policy promoting an intrinsically evil act, such as abortion, euthanasia, assisted suicide, deliberately subjecting workers or the poor to subhuman living conditions, redefining marriage in ways that violate its essential meaning, or racist behavior if the voter intends to support that position. In such cases, a Catholic would be guilty of formal cooperation in grave evil. At the same time, a voter should not use a candidate’s opposition to an intrinsic evil to justify indifference or

inattentiveness to other important moral issues involving human life and dignity.

There may be times when a Catholic who rejects a candidate’s unacceptable position even on policies promoting an intrinsically evil act may reasonably decide to vote for that candidate for other morally grave reasons. Voting in this way would be permissible only for truly grave moral reasons, not to advance narrow interests or partisan preferences or to ignore a fundamental moral evil.

When all candidates hold a position that promotes an intrinsically evil act, the conscientious voter faces a dilemma. The voter may decide to take the extraordinary step of not voting for any candidate or, after careful deliberation, may decide to vote for the candidate deemed less likely to advance such a morally flawed position and more likely to pursue other authentic human goods.

In making these decisions, it is essential for Catholics to be guided by a wellformed conscience that recognizes that all issues do not carry the same moral weight and that the moral obligation to oppose policies promoting intrinsically evil acts has a special claim on our consciences and our actions. These decisions should take into account a candidate’s commitments, character, integrity, and ability to influence a given issue. In the end, this is a decision to be made by each Catholic guided by a conscience formed by Catholic moral teaching.
