Dear Parishioners, In 1948, an American poet, Jessica Powers, wrote a poem, ‘My heart ran forth.’ The following lines are an excerpt from the poem. “But wisdom halted it, out far afield,

asked: did you sow this seed around your house, or in the neighbor’s garden or any nearby acreage of need? No, then it will not grow in outer places. Love has its proper soil, its native land; its first roots fasten on the near at hand. Back toward the house from which I deftly fled, down neigh-bor’s lanes, Across my father’s barley my heart brought home its charity. It said: love is a simple plant like a Creeping Charlie; once it takes root its talent is to spread. Love is described so beautifully by Jessica Powers. The tendency is always to place love or things that challenge us far away, at a distance. Jesus tells us in this Sunday’s gospel reading, “Love one anoth-er… as I have loved you” This invitation to love is for every day. It is not only reserved to some special people in our lives. He is inviting us to love everyone as he loved us. I had a wonderful trip to India and was able to spend some time with my parents. I am grateful to Fr. Chris and the staff who took care of the parish in my absence. We have a visiting priest with us, Fr. George Thadathil SDB. We went to High School together, completed our four years of Theology together and were ordained a week apart. He is currently the Principal of a College in Darjeeling, in the foothills of the Himalayas. He is on a 6 month Sabbatical visiting a few Universities. He will be at St Anselm for a month. Yours Sincerely, Fr. Jose Shaji, Pastor

REST Goal Within Reach Our goal of 6,000 signatures in support of REST is so close - we have over 5,000! We need your help to reach the goal by Monday, May 2nd. The first Accountability Session will be held for the Supervisorial Candidates of District 2 (including San Anselmo, Fairfax, Ross, Greenbrae, Larkspur) here at St. Anselm's Centennial Hall on Thursday, May 5th at 5:30pm. It will ultimately be the Supervisors who vote on a permanent location for REST. As 3 of the 5 Super-visorial seats are up for election this year, it is important that all candidates understand the support of REST. Cards may be returned to the rectory, in the collection basket or email [email protected] to arrange to have them picked up. Thank you to all who have returned cards. For more information about how to participate, please contact Pat Langley at [email protected]. The dates for the actions are: Thursday, May 5th - 5:30pm to 6:30pm Accountability Session with District 2 Candidates Location: St. Anselm's Catholic Church, Centennial Hall (97 Shady Ln, Ross, CA 94957) Tuesday, May 10th - 7:00pm to 8:00pm Accountability Session with District 3 Candidates Location: Congregation Kol Shofar (215 Blackfield Dr, Tiburon, CA 94920)

Behold, God’s dwelling is with the Human Race. Revelation 21:3

TRUE CHRISTIAN COMMUNITY Can you imagine a world such as the one put before us in today’s scripture readings? Communities of believers everywhere would support and encourage one another and be identified as Christians by the way they love each other. It would be a world with no tears, no death and mourning, no crying out in pain. “Behold, I make all things new,” we hear the Son of God say in the second reading from the book of Revelation (21:5). Is this world of John’s

vision only imaginary? Are these faithful followers for

whom Jesus prayed only a sav-ior’s dream? Today they are

put before us as a worthy goal. How much closer can we come to this vision of a true Christian community in our lives today ?

First Holy Communion Next weekend, 53 St. Anselm Parish students will receive the sacrament of First Holy Eucharist, during the 5pm Mass on Saturday, April 30th or at the 10am Mass, Sunday, May 1st. These students have been preparing for this sacrament for some time. They received their First Reconciliation in December in preparation for this next beautiful sacrament. They have studied scripture, practiced what it means to be Catholic and participated in many activities to better understand what the Catholic Faith is all about. Under the direction of Nicholas Case, DRE, teachers, Tara Ticknor, Patty Pryor, Stephanie Sanford and Debra Chambliss have worked with the second grade students, teaching them prayers, the order of the Mass, reconciliation, information about the Holy Eucharist and new songs. Holy Eucharist, or Holy Communion, is the most central sacrament to receive. Holy Communion is offered at every Mass; and a good portion of the Mass is devoted to the ritual of preparing the bread and wine to become the body and blood of Christ. Transubstantia-tion is the act of changing the substances of bread and wine into the substances of the Body and Blood of Christ. The Holy Eucharist refers to Christ’s body and blood present in the consecrated host on the altar, and we rec-ognize that the consecrated bread and wine are actually the body and blood, soul and divinity of Christ. The presence of Christ in the Holy Eucharist isn't just symbolic, it’s real. When we receive Holy Communion, we are intimately united with Jesus Christ — he literally becomes part of us. Also, by receiving Holy Communion, we express our connection with all Catholics who believe and practice the same faith. This sense of participation in a larger community is why we adhere to the “law” that only people who are in communion with the Church may receive Holy Communion. The Holy Eucharist is food for the soul, so it’s given and eaten during Holy Communion at Mass. Here at St. Anselm Church, trained Eucharistic Ministers and clergy give Holy Communion, in the form of consecrated unleavened hosts, made from wheat flour and wa-ter, just like the unleavened bread used by Jesus at the Last Supper. Girls typically wear white dress-es and veils and often look like little brides, and boys wear their Sunday best or new suits and ties for the occasion. You will also notice the white banners they’ve created, hanging in the church, with symbols of chalices, bread, crosses and sometimes a dove. Please keep these students in your prayers, especially for their sacred day next weekend.
