Mission StatementSt. Anselm’s Abbey School seeks to promote the spiritual, personal, and intellectual development of young men with demonstrated academic achievement. Our school, serving grades six through twelve, with its roots in the values of the Christian Gospels and Catholic tradition, strives to create a community built on respect for truth, love of learning, regard for human dignity, and tolerance. We pursue this goal by leading our students through a challenging and balanced program of study in the arts, sciences, and theology that gives them a solid preparation for the demands of college. By living and promoting the Benedictine spirit, we strive within our school to create an atmosphere of peace, a sense of service to community, and a willingness within our students to work toward a balance in mind, body, and spirit.

2013-2014 Annual Report | 3

The first of all things to aim at is to love the Lord God with your whole heart and soul and strength, and then to love your neighbor as you love yourself… Give help and support to the poor… Keep the reality of death always before your eyes, have a care about how you act every hour of your life… You should take delight in listening to sacred reading and in often turning generously to prayer… These are the guidelines to lead us along the way of spiritual achievement.

The Rule of St. Benedict, Chapter 68

As I write this introduction to the 2013-2014 Annual Report, the monks are joyfully celebrating our Patronal Feast of Saint Benedict of Norcia (480-547). The Rule of St. Benedict has proved so wise and balanced that it has served as the foundation of practically every attempt at Western religious communal living for over 1,500 years. It recognizes that people strive for perfection but often fall well short. The Rule aims to be “for beginners” in which even the least perfect and least able can grow in spiritual stature.

The Rule of St. Benedict has much to say—it drags one’s eyes up to the stars but keeps one’s feet firmly on the ground—it calls us to perfection but keeps us sane. I am confident that this Benedictine monastery and school continue to exemplify Pope Benedict XVI’s statement that monasticism has long been “the indispensable forerunner and bearer not only of cultural continuity but above all of fundamental and religious and moral values.”  The very existence of monasticism is presumed to make the world different.  In this sense, the mystery of the Church is realized in the history of the world.  And as I have said before, by  inspiring young minds, we educate our students to become moral persons—physically, intellectually, and spiritually prepared for life in the twenty-first century.

In celebrating our Patronal Feast, St. Anselm’s Abbey and School have so many things to be grateful for—Br. Ignacio took his final solemn vows in May, we have three other monks in simple vows, the school held its 69th commencement, graduating 41 talented young men, college placements are high—as you shall see later in this report. Furthermore, enrollment numbers have increased, and the auditors tell me that at the end of this fiscal year on June 30th, the school operated once again in the black.

In reviewing the 2013-2014 academic and fiscal years, it is my hope that our readers will be able to share in the strengths and great accomplishments of this Benedictine “school of the Lord’s service” as the Abbey begins its 90th year, and the School its 73rd year of academic excellence.

I want to take this opportunity to thank Mr.  Bill  Crittenberger, who completed another most successful year as Headmaster. Bill took office on July 1st, 2012, as the tenth Headmaster of St. Anselm’s, and for the past two years has led the School with warmth, with enthusiasm, and with vision. We are blessed to have him at the Abbey School.

In late August 2013, the school year began with 248 young scholars.  These academically motivated young men broke the summer silence of our hallowed halls with robust eagerness.

We are grateful that among all the possible school choices, St. Anselm’s Abbey School is their preferred destination.  I am pleased to report that our mission of academic excellence remains pre-eminent as attested to by articles in The Washington Post listing us as being #1 and “most challenging” in the metropolitan area, and 37th in the nation, based upon our Advanced Placement courses.

The Parents Association held its annual Family Picnic on September 8th with ample food and games and other delights for a huge crowd of teachers, parents, children, and guests. At that time, the Association presented the School with a $10,000 check to support the Fall Scholarship Gala—all these gifts go directly to support current-year financial aid. Many thanks!

The 33rd Fall Scholarship Gala took place on the evening of  October 26th. I want to thank once again all the parents who worked so hard to make the Gala a success, especially Mrs. Kay Kalhorn and Mrs. Chris Butler. And I want to thank all those who participated in raising over $245,000 for current financial aid. That evening, our guests of honor were Mr. James Connell, and Mr. Thomas Borger and his wife Gerry. Mr. Connell and Mr. Borger were both past chairmen of the Board. May I encourage you to mark your calendars now for our 34th Gala,  “Passport to Adventure,”  on Saturday,  October 25th.

The Alumni Office, under the direction of Mr. Lawrence Hamm, ‘68, had a full schedule of well-attended events.  The annual Career Day was held on September 16th,

when ten distinguished alumni shared their knowledge and expertise with our Fifth and Sixth Form students.  A very competitive Damian Crane, ‘55, Memorial Pool Tournament  was held  on October 24th, followed  on November 30th  by the annual Thanksgiving Memorial Mass and Alumni-Varsity Basketball Game. Bravo to the Varsity for their victory!

I held Alumni Gatherings in Chicago, Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, and Reno in the summer of 2013. Then in January 2014, Mr. Richard Stafford, ’53, hosted 16 alumni and guests in New York City; then I went on to Boston for the Model United Nations Conference where I met our participating students, and while there, I met with several smaller alumni groups.

The Alumni Association hosted its sixth  Annual All-Alumni Reunion  on the weekend of April 25th. That Saturday morning, the Peter Samp, ’08, Memorial 5K Race was held. Participating students, alumni, parents, friends, and monks had a magnificent morning for the run, which was followed by a picnic lunch. That evening, there were 160 attendees at the banquet at which Mr. Peter Collins, ’74, was the recipient of the Abbot Alban Boultwood, OSB, Award for his decades of tireless service to the Alumni Association and the School. Also, Silver Medals were given to alumni who graduated 25 years ago, and Gold Medals were bestowed the day before upon Mr. Jonathan Colby, ’64, and Mr. Peter Luciano, ’64, who celebrated their 50th anniversary. Needless to say, I want to thank Mr. Tim May, ’83, President of the Alumni Association, and all the members of the Alumni Board for the love they show for their alma mater and for their exemplary labora on its behalf.

On June 2nd, the 21st  Annual St.  Anselm’s Abbey School Golf Outing was held at the Glenn Dale Country Club. The 60 golfers were treated to a most pleasant day weather-wise. The Pickering brothers came the greatest distance—David, ’74, from Florida, and Duff, ’80, from California with his son, Christopher. First Place was won by our assistant soccer coach, Tom Stack, his father, and their foursome. Again, I want to thank Mr. Patrick Attridge, ’74, for his 20 consecutive years of chairing this event.

The School hosted two events for Form VII Forever, our Past Parents social organization.  The first gathering took place at the Christmas Concert on December 7th with a cocktail reception.  The second event was a Lenten Mass and brunch on March 9th.  Fr. Michael Hall, OSB, ’56, school chaplain, celebrated the Mass and preached; this was followed by a magnificent brunch in the Commons.

As President of the School, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Mr. Stephen Kinnaird, ’80. He has served steadfastly as chair for the past four years; Ms. Sylvia Mahaffey will be seated as Chair this coming September. I want to thank all the members of the Board of Trustees for their dedicated service to St. Anselm’s Abbey School. Mr. James Boland, ’67, Mr. Jean Gaetjens, Mr. Marco Clark, and Mr. Stephen Kearney, ’74, whose terms expired in June, deserve special thanks and recognition for their labor of love.

Likewise, I want to thank Mrs. Carol Ramirez, the President of the Parents Association, and all the parents who served so generously over this past year on a full calendar of many vital and time-consuming projects and events. Added recognition must be given to Ms. Sarah Elder, mother of Eric Yde, ’12, and Mark Yde, ’14, for her many years of nonstop work and support for our Athletic Program and more recently for coordinating the Appalachian Service Project with Mrs. Kathy Dangle and faculty chaperone, Ms. Janine Dunne. We are truly blessed to have such dedication and enthusiasm.

Most importantly, I must speak about the Brian Devine Family Challenge. Once again in December, 2013, the School received a Million Dollar gift from the  Brian Devine Family Trust. This money has been placed in the Endowed Scholarship Fund, permanently restricted for need-based scholarship awards. This year, Brian Devine, ’59, initiated a Challenge. If the school could raise a Million Dollars by December 2014, the Devine Family Trust would give the school another Million Dollar gift. I am ecstatic to report that so far we have raised $769,738 in cash and pledges toward the Challenge—An Endowment for Now and Tomorrow. We are almost there! To ensure that we meet our goal, all funds raised for the 2014 Scholarship Gala will be designated for the Endowed Scholarship Fund. I urge you to consider supporting the gala and, in doing so, the Endowed Scholarship Fund and the Devine Family Challenge.

Finally, I want to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of our benefactors, donors, alumni, parents, and friends who have contributed so generously this year to St. Anselm’s Abbey School. As of  June 30th, Mrs. Kimberly Walhout of our Development Office told me that the School raised in all our funds—Fall Gala, Annual Fund, the Devine Challenge, and with other gifts—$1,961,340. A full listing of donors can be found later in this Annual Report. Without your prayers and benefactions, this Benedictine Abbey and School in the Nation’s Capital could not survive. Know that the monks pray daily for you and your families.

Let me close with a prayer to Saint Benedict:

“O glorious Saint Benedict, sublime model of all virtues, vessel of God’s grace!  Behold us beginners, in humility praying at your feet.  We implore your loving heart to pray for us before the throne of God.  To you we have recourse in all the dangers that daily surround us.  Shield us against all strife; inspire us to imitate you in all things.  May your blessings be with us always, so that we may run in the way of the Lord and shun whatever God forbids, and avoid the occasions of pride. We therefore invoke your powerful intercession, in confident hope that you will hear our prayers and obtain for us the special grace and favors we so earnestly implore as we begin over again each day in this school of the Lord’s service.  Amen.”

Pax in Sapientia,

Fr. Peter Weigand, OSBPresident

2013-2014 Annual Report | 5

Headmaster’s LetterWith many exciting things going on around here and such uplifting news to report, it’s hard to know where to begin. I have done my best to list the highlights below.

First, I would like to extend my kudos and thanks to Steve Kinnaird ’80 for his rock-solid service to the School as its Chairman of the Board of Trustees the past three years, and well-wishes to Steve’s successor, Sylvia Mahaffey.

Godspeed to the 41 graduates of 2014: talented, spirited, diverse, and cohesive, and recipients of 216 college acceptances and over $4.6 million in financial assistance. We eagerly await the arrival of 60 bright newcomers in the fall, a new-student number that accurately reflects our continuing upward trend in admissions. Kirk Otterson, former Director of Admissions, has been appointed the School’s Assistant Headmaster, and Peter Young ’01 will assume Kirk’s former role.

$1.1 million in Financial Aid will be made available to 43 % of our families in ’14-’15, with an average grant size of $10,000 (accounting for 19 percent of total expenditures). The 2014 Devine Matching Challenge, which will increase our Endowed Scholarship Fund, is about four-fifths met, a goal that we cannot allow to fall short.St. Anselm’s again this year was recognized as the top school in the DC area via the Washington Post’s Challenge Index (which rates the highest number of AP Exams taken per student). This year and next, the following new courses have been offered and will be continued: Robotics II, Arabic, AP Psychology, AP Environmental Science, AP World History, and AP Studio Art.

Raising Benedictine Ethos awareness was a major point of emphasis this year, which led to (among others): two days of faculty/staff retreat/reflection; the first annual Benedictine Heritage Week; and the hanging of inspiring and eye-catching on-campus banners. Our interscholastic varsity athletic teams earned first-, second-, or third-place finishes in nine of the ten sports in which they competed.

Finally, in the spring of 2014, a survey of current parents unveiled an overall strong satisfaction level with the School’s programs, leadership, and communications.

The summer months, with their slower, less-on-the-plate tempo, allow me to catch my breath and reflect on the preceding year while thinking about and planning for the future.  Having just completed my second year at St. Anselm’s, I find myself more content than ever in having landed here, and I continue to be motivated and inspired by the work that I am doing, the opportunities that await me, and the difference I know that I and others are making in the lives of young people. A special place this, one that demands our best and returns much more.

Dear Members of the St. Anselm’s Community:

Pax in Sapientia.

Chairman’s ReportSt. Anselm’s continues on its path of success. We are blessed to be guided by the strong leadership of Abbot James Wiseman, OSB; our President, Fr. Peter Weigand, OSB; and our Headmaster, Mr. William Crittenberger.

We continue to execute our five-year Strategic Plan, in fulfillment of the School’s mission to provide, in the Benedictine tradition, the premier high school education in the Washington area for gifted boys. The School was once again ranked first in the Washington Post Challenge Index, and our surging enrollment (a testament to the hard work of the administration and our admissions and communications teams) reflects the School’s standing in the community. We anticipate meeting our near-term enrollment target of 260 students within the next year or two. We continue to pursue our goal of making the St. Anselm’s education available to students from all walks of life, by keeping tuition affordable and giving financial aid at levels unmatched by our peer schools. Parents of current students express high satisfaction with their son’s experience and education at St. Anselm’s and the Benedictine values that the School imparts. That is a credit to the superb quality and dedication of our faculty, and the important influence of the monastery on school life.

I am grateful to my fellow Trustees for their generous service, not only in the plenary sessions of the Board, but in the various Committees (Finance, Development, Enrollment, Audit, Headmaster Support, and Trustee Nominations) in which much of the Board’s work is done. I welcome Mrs. Sylvia Mahaffey, a parent of a St. Anselm’s alumnus and a wise voice on the Board of Trustees these past few years, as my successor next year as Board Chair. I thank our departing members of the Board whose terms have expired − Mr. Marco Clark, the President of Bishop McNamara High School, and alumni Mr. James Boland, ’67, and Mr. Stephen Kearney, ’74 – for their many contributions. I am pleased to announce that we will add four new Trustees of great distinction: Mr. Daniel Kerns, President of Georgetown Visitation Preparatory School; Mrs. Susan Creighton, a leading attorney in Washington and parent of a St. Anselm’s alumnus; alumnus Matthew Nolan, ’76, also a distinguished Washington attorney and a former member of the St. Anselm’s Board of Advisors; and Awenate Cobbina,’98, currently Special Assistant to the President and Policy Advisor to the Office of the Chief of Staff at the White House and a former President of the St. Anselm’s Alumni Association.

Lastly, on behalf of the Board, I wish to express our profound gratitude to alumnus Mr. Brian Devine, ’59, and his family, who have generously offered a matching gift of $1 million dollars for our Endowed Scholarship Fund if we are able to raise that amount from other sources in 2014. As all alumni know, the intimacy of a small school is a big part of what makes the St. Anselm’s education special, but the small size of our alumni base means that our endowment is correspondingly small. I hope that all alumni, current and past parents, and friends of the school will rally behind the matching campaign; move forward any gifts that would have been made in future years into 2014; and stretch as much as they can so that we can capitalize on the wonderful opportunity offered by Mr. Devine to strengthen the financial foundation of the school.

Dear Friends of St. Anselm’s Abbey School:

Sincerely,

Stephen B. Kinnaird, ’80Chairman of the Board of Trustees

Commencement AddressDR. INÉS BUSTILLO

Abbot James, Fr. Peter, Fr. Michael, Mr. Crittenberger, monks, faculty, staff, families, and students from the graduating class of 2014,

Thank you. It is a great honor to give this graduation address. The St. Anselm’s community has given so much to our family. Congratulations, Class of 2014! I probably do not need to tell you that you are graduating from a very special place. We watched our two sons graduate from this stage a few years ago. Their St. Anselm’s experience instilled in them the love of learning and a moral compass for life. The commitment of these outstanding educators to academic excellence and to Benedictine principles makes this school unique. You should be thankful to your parents who have provided the incredible opportunity of a St. Anselm’s experience.

My education background was a bit different than yours. Because of my father’s job, I attended six different schools in four different countries before graduating from high school. I then attended three different colleges in three other countries before completing my undergraduate degree. As you might imagine, after attending all of these schools, I believed I was a know-it-all in the business of learning. That is, until I came to the U.S. and enrolled in my final college.

Education here was a completely different experience for me. What I found most fascinating was how learning took place. Students were encouraged to be creative, expected to speak up and come up with their own solutions, and even challenge faculty members. Homework and exam problems were not about what the textbook said, but about students drawing their own conclusions. Concepts such as “thinking outside the box” or “connecting the dots” were completely new to me. It did not help that I was not fluent in English at the time and had no clue what box they were talking about and where these dots were located.

I am sure your transition to college will not be such a culture shock. But prepare yourself for the many choices you will need to eventually make among the many academic programs, majors, minors, and career paths. Once again, my own experiences did not prepare me appropriately for the large menu of decisions. In most other countries, especially in developing countries where I attended many schools, options are very limited.

I cannot say you will not still be overwhelmed, but this school has prepared you rigorously for the future and given you the tools to make these choices. Monks and teachers have guided your understanding of the

ultimate purpose of learning and inspired you to use your talents for something other than your benefit. All of us in this community look forward with great hope to your future academic achievements and choices.

Early on in my education I knew I wanted to do international work, and soon I will celebrate 25 years at the United Nations (UN), specializing in the area of development. I can say the UN also looks forward with much hope to the future choices that young people like you will make. You are part of the largest generation of young people in history, numbering over a billion. In fact, half the world is under 25 years of age.

There are a lot of you, so your choices matter. Let me share with you two examples: In recent years, the lives of billions have improved as a result of many international efforts. All over the world young men and women your age are now better educated, better nourished and can expect to live longer than their parents. And for the first time in history, a majority of the world’s population is living under democratic regimes.

However, despite much progress, 2.5 billion people are still living in poverty. In addition there is a growing sense that the world is becoming more unfair. You may have noticed in recent news reports that income is becoming more unequal in the U.S. and throughout the world.

Progress in reducing poverty and inequality requires a united effort. Social scientists, like in my own field of economics, can seek to design effective public policy programs to address inequalities. Engineers and doctors can work more closely with citizens to provide their necessary life needs. Students trained in the humanities

Vespers of Graduation

2013-2014 Annual Report | 9

can provide new ways to think critically about the causes. The point is that addressing inequality in the U.S. and in other countries will require perseverance and talent across the various disciplines you might choose to study in college.

The problems I described demand cooperative solutions. Each one of you needs to do their part, but none of you by yourself will have the answer. You have probably experienced in school how being part of a community was key to the success of a particular project or homework. However, cooperation has become more difficult. Globalization and technology have brought the world closer–we Skype, use Facebook, tweet in all languages–but trusting each other, finding common ground, and collaborating has grown harder.

Our world seems to be lacking the Benedictine teachings calling us to humility, hospitality, and stewardship that when practiced would facilitate working together. Have you ever wondered how different our world would be if more people lived according to Benedictine hallmarks?

As Abbey graduates trained in the Benedictine tradition of this monastic school, you have the foundation and the tools to be part of the solution. I know as well that you have much experience at doing homework, so with the permission of the faculty, I would like to assign to you extra homework today. The homework is about how you will choose to use your talents to build a more just global community. You are asked to answer the following two questions and provide concrete examples: First, how will you practice Benedictine hospitality

hroughout your life, listen with compassion, and embrace those that might feel left out? Second, how will you practice Benedictine humility, reject self-righteousness, and respect those with different views so as to break down barriers and find common ground?

There is no deadline, you can take a lifetime, but I hope you consider doing this homework. You should expect to make mistakes, but do not give up; persevere, and start over and over again.

In closing, [I’ll tell you that] when Fr. Peter invited me to address you today I worried about what to say. Many graduation speakers before me have noted that “no one will remember the words of the commencement speaker.” However, in the event that you remember something, I hope it is just one piece of advice: practice listening and practice gratitude.

As Abbey graduates, you know that “listen” is the very first word of the Rule of St. Benedict. Everything starts with listening and everything will depend on how you choose to respond. Make a daily habit to take the time to block out all distractions–iPads, iPods, iPhones—and make space to listen to yourself. Try to sit just 15 minutes or so every day in silence and look for things to be grateful for. Feel and practice gratitude every day. Slow down, sit still, be silent. It will help you make good choices. It may also suggest creative answers to your homework questions.

Thank you, and congratulations to you all.

Austin Scholar AwardSEBASTIAN MAZZA, ’14

Abbot James, Fr. Peter, Mr. Crittenberger, our Benedictine brothers, faculty, staff, family, friends,

and, most of all, the Class of 2014:

I’m no great public speaker, so I’m taking a tip out of the trashy beauty magazine and trendy news website playbook: I’m gonna read this as a list from ten to one. It’s totally not a list, but the idea is that every time you hear a number you’ll be jolted away from your iPhones and back to my monotone.

10 It’s difficult to talk about the end of my seven years here at the Abbey, the end of my class’s

education here, because it leaves me totally vulnerable to gooey feelings of affection, nostalgia and sadness. These feelings are usually softened by the question of what’s to come next. The immediacy of having more work to do and more places to go distracts from what we’re leaving behind.

9 The problem is that the class of 2014 is not, as Fr. Peter would say, ‘beginning again’ just yet. We have

three whole months until college. As of right now I’m definitely not a college student. I can barely do the

Page 10: St. Anselm’s Abbey SchoolPhotography in the Annual Report has been provided by the St. Anselm’s Abbey School development, yearbook, and Priory Press staffs, as well as by David

10 | St. Anselm’s Abbey School

laundry or get myself out of bed in the morning. But my classmates and I aren’t high school students anymore either. Actually, some teachers might say we haven’t been fully-motivated students for like, four months at least. While discussing Aquinas in Mr. Alspaugh’s Ethics class, we touched on the idea of the ‘excluded middle’. The thinking goes that a logical proposition can be one of two things—either true or false; the middle, a weird not-quite-true not-quite-false space, is excluded. It seems like the class of 2014 sits smack dab in that excluded middle, between the ‘false’ of being in high school and the ‘true’ of attending college. It’s a peculiar place to be.

8 If it sounds like I’m exaggerating, consider that for the better part of the past decade we’ve been pushed.

First in middle school to get into a good high school, in 9th grade to start well, in 10th because colleges like improvement, in 11th because that’s the most important time, in the first half of 12th because that’s the most important time, in the second half of 12th because of stories Mr. Corrigan told about that kid who failed a class and got dropped by his college of choice. To be that pressured and then all of a sudden released and done, to be here, no longer hurtling towards proof of collegiate self-worth, floating in an excluded middle, feels very, very strange.

7 It’s a weird predicament. For one thing, I’m not sure all of you

appreciate just how surreal it is for us to be on this campus and to not be super tired and stressed out about late homework as usual. My eyes aren’t drooping with fatigue so I can see how intimidating the future looks; and I can see the past layered behind us, the school years my class will never relive, the hours teachers spent planning lessons, the monks endlessly praying, the traditions and precedent behind the education we received.

6 I’m not sure where we are in all of this. Have you ever tried pinning down the

present moment, but every time you do it’s already over? (e.g. the present is now…no, now…no, now…no…). In my last weeks here, I’ve been thinking about that elusive present. We can talk about weeks, months, years. They’re roomy concepts. But they’re also hazy approximations, like looking at people on the ground from an airplane. On the other hand, to be present to the fleeting moments, to really appreciate and engage with a poem in Mr. Vaile’s class, or one of those incredibly detailed, anecdotal history lectures from Mr. Achilles or even Jared’s unbeatable debate skills, means to be in a state of constantly losing the now... no, now… no, now.

5 This same scenario, the whole caring-about-and-being-present-to-something-means-that-you’ll-

suffer-with-and-eventually-lose-it thing, is probably familiar to the parents in the audience. Feed, clothe, teach, love, grow incredibly close to the child, all for the overt purpose of assuring he doesn’t need you, can leave and outlive you. Maybe some of my classmates are

familiar with this feeling from their current love-lives and friendships: the more they put into the relationship now, the harder it’s gonna be to separate for college. I’d say that senioritis – in addition to being a feeling of fatigue and indifference because the race to college is finally over – is acting like you don’t care in order to distance yourself from the fact that you do care. And you’re leaving. And that’s hard.

It doesn’t seem fair. But I think that all the creating and the suffering are crucial parts of human development, things the Abbey education at its best has taught me. The painful truth might be that our parents know us too well, that until we leave them, we risk always getting what we want from them and never discovering what we truly need.

To me, this is what’s so important about the monks and the lives they lead, subordinating individual wants to a higher purpose. And I know that sometimes the spiritual side of the school can seem totally separate from the daily grind and the weird emotions with which we sometimes get charged. I get what that’s like.

4 You wake up at 6:30, after only five hours of sleep, to your mom’s hysterical yells that you’re gonna be

late; you’re so tired and rushed that you skip breakfast. Now it’s 7:58 and you can’t park in the upper lot even though there are a billion open spaces; so you have to run up the hill to Ms. Brown just as she’s pulling out the late slips and she totally calls your bluff about not having a first period class, the teacher of which kicks you out for not having a suit jacket, which you forgot because you were so rushed; your next period teacher makes you spit out your gum; the next yells at you for sleeping in class and when the day’s almost over, there’s an assembly and it’s long and pointless and the headmaster Mr. Crittenberger is so enthused and kind

and an all-around good guy that you can’t even be angry at him and the world is so unfair and insensitive you just want out.

Or from the teacher’s perspective, after working excitedly all night on a lesson plan, to watch the kids who didn’t read or finish their homework or who fall asleep in class… because-because-because they’re lazy and ungrateful and it’s

Just. Not. Fair.

3 The worst part of this lamentation-style thinking is that it’s partly correct. The teacher was let down.

The student was tired and hungry. But instead of empathizing, instead of seeing the not-quite-right not-quite-wrong middle, by calling a student ‘lazy’ or a teacher ‘unfair’, both see only what is missing. And we are far too small and the universe is far too large to be assessing everything we don’t have. This lamentation-style thinking can transform a son into a

things the Abbey education at its best

has taught me.

thief, a loving boy- or girlfriend into imperfection after imperfection. It focuses so hard on infinite, unfulfilled wants at the extremes that it’s literally blind to the needs we can feed right in front of us, in the middle.

2 I’d argue that the presence of monks, the monastery, the occasionally-exasperating religion requirements,

prayers, etc. have been – even stripped of religious symbolism – moments of stopping, listening, noticing what is there rather than what isn’t. St. Anselm’s at its best – and let’s not be so self-centered as to say it’s better than every school in the area and country – is a collision between our hysterical day-to-day and something really old, quiet and slow. It has made me feel really young, really small in a massive world. At the same time, St. Anselm’s made me feel safe. I think for a lot of us, both teachers and students, St. Anselm’s is a safe place. A bubble sure, but I’ll always be grateful for the refuge it

gave me to grow and prepare for the trials to come in college and in life.

1 In this weird middle space, my class is coming to accept the scariest part, that if the tradition is to

continue, we’re going to have to fold ourselves into it, become those guys who went here a year ago, five, ten years ago, in fact, to be those guys who aren’t talked about at all. The next wave of tradition comes crashing down with our class. What remains is not the wave now…no, now… no, now… but the ocean—vast, seductive, scary. From this included middle, we’re looking around, hoping forward, and for a moment remembering back, saying thank you. It was barely an instant; it is already gone. To my incredible teachers, to my parents and all the parents, most importantly to my class who shared so much with me, I’m not sure what it means to be eternally grateful, but I am now… no, now… no, now.

Mr. Crittenberger, Abbot James, Fr. Peter, Fr. Michael, all the monks, faculty, family, and friends, and of course, the class of 2014:

As my time at the Abbey has been drawing to a close, I have found myself wandering the campus, as I’m sure some of my classmates have as well, thinking about all the things that have happened here over the last seven years – the class trips, the big projects, the inside jokes – and all the ways the Abbey has shaped us in our time here. Of all the places on campus that hold a lot of significance, my favorite spot to sit and reflect is the gazebo up by the other building because of the way that it really captures the whole Abbey identity.

I think the school’s mission statement sums up a large part of that identity quite well when it says “we strive within our school to create… a willingness within our students to work towards a balance of mind, body, and spirit.” The gazebo sits at the center of the campus, surrounded by all the other things that define the Abbey. So where better to contemplate the influence the school has had on us?

If you walk straight into the gazebo and sit down on the bench across from you, you look out the doorway at the main academic building – the place where we isolated our DNA in 6th grade, the place where we learned that all of Gaul is divided into three parts, the place where we dissected sharks and built Rube Goldberg machines, and the place where we studied Aquinas, Aristotle, Anselm of course, and lots of other philosophers with names that start with ‘A’. You might think that at a school the academic building would be an overwhelmingly dominant presence, but one of the great things about

St. Anselm of Canterbury AwardJOHN BUTLER, ’14

the Abbey is that the mind is only one part of building an Abbey Boy.

Look left from your seat in the gazebo, and you face down the hill towards this building, the home of the gym, the weight room, the theater, and most importantly, lunch. These facilities here host the tangible side to an Abbey upbringing. It was on the field outside that I learned

Page 12: St. Anselm’s Abbey SchoolPhotography in the Annual Report has been provided by the St. Anselm’s Abbey School development, yearbook, and Priory Press staffs, as well as by David

12 | St. Anselm’s Abbey School

how to play football, and where our baseball and cross country teams brought home a number of championship banners.

Across the Commons in the gym Abbey Boys spend lunch periods and afternoons playing basketball with friends or taking on other schools’ teams. Downstairs in the fencing and wrestling rooms, some of us discovered a love for combat sports. Here on this stage, musicians, singers, and actors developed a passion for performing. But even looking at this second building, you still don’t get the full picture of the Abbey experience.

Turn again in the gazebo, and you face up the hill towards the Abbey itself, the home of the monks who so graciously share their home, their experience, and their faith with the student body, and the symbol of the spiritual side of Saint Anselm’s. We’ve participated in Masses, food drives, weekly service, and, you know, whatever happens on Kairos, all of which has been rooted in the centuries-old English Benedictine tradition – one of hospitality, respect, love.

Looking out from the gazebo you can see these manifestations of all the ways the school has shaped us, but the gazebo is much more than just a lookout. When I sit in the gazebo, I don’t just remember the classes in the building in front of me. I don’t just remember the games and performances in the building down the hill beside me. I don’t just remember the Masses in the chapel in the monastery behind me. I look at the wooden floor under my feet and the grass and the picnic tables around it, and

I remember hanging out with friends here. I remember eating donuts with the rest of the school on Tuesdays. I remember Frisbees and laughter. I remember a light saber battle royale. The gazebo is the heart of the Abbey, but not just because it sits at the intersection of the school’s three pillars of mind, body, and spirit. It’s the heart of the school because it represents the love and brotherhood of the students. That’s what the Abbey experience is really all about.

To me the gazebo is the ongoing life of the student body. It’s the camaraderie and unity of my class – the class that turned Mr. Morse’s English class into a modern art exhibition – the class that rebuilt ‘surf’s up’ on a day’s notice – the class that celebrated the end of our first year of high school with a grand Jedi battle – the class that threw Mrs. Rentas a farewell birthday party – the class that I will miss dearly but that I know will pick up right where we left off at reunions without missing a beat.

I’d like to thank my parents for all the guidance, support, and encouragement over the years. Thank you also to all the parents whose care and sacrifices have put this class where we are now. More broadly I’d like to thank all the family and friends who have gotten us through it all. Thank you to the monks and teachers who have shared knowledge, experience, wisdom, and more than a few laughs with us. And of course to my classmates, thank you for everything that has made these last seven years so fantastic.

Congratulations, and Live The Fourth.

Alumni SpeakerBLAIR O’CONNELL, ’05

Good afternoon, Fr. Peter, Mr. Mehigan, faculty of St. Anselms’s Abbey School, parents, fellow alumni, and the Form II class of 2014. Thank you for the opportunity and privilege of addressing you all here this afternoon. I am honored to speak to you.

To the students sitting before me, congratulations on completing your first milestone at St. Anselm’s as you continue your journey of becoming well rounded and educated young men in the image of Saint Benedict. You are now the future upperclassmen of St. Anselm’s.

To be honest, when Fr. Peter asked me to address your class, I was not sure if I was really the alumnus he had in mind. In fact, I thought for sure he had me confused with someone else. I can assure you, and Fr. Peter will confirm this for me, that I was not exactly a perfect student in my early days at the Abbey. Fr. Peter and I had a few heart to heart talks when I was your age; some included my parents for less than honorable reasons, but it was always an invigorating experience nevertheless.

But, as I thought more about this opportunity, I became excited about what I could offer from my seven years of experience at St. Anselm’s to future Form III students, believe it or not, soon to be college students. Parents, get ready. Like most of you, I too started here at the Abbey in A Form. I grew up in La Plata, Maryland − a small town in Southern Maryland which most, if not all of you, have never heard of − but the more relevant point is that my family lived an hour and half drive from St. Anselm’s. I did that drive each way, every day.

I attended Catholic school from first grade through my undergraduate college days at Georgetown. I cannot overstate the beauty of a Catholic education. The first time I visited St. Anselm’s, the first thing I thought was the school seeming like a farm in the city, a cactus farm to be specific. While that sounds a little odd, Archbishop Neal School in La Plata, which I attended from the first to fifth grade, could have easily fit into the Abbey gym twice over. I lived very close to a few farms, so I kind of felt very much at home. I could not believe how enormous the campus was and I remember thinking, I am looking for a new middle school, not a college, why am I here?

Fr. Peter greeted my parents and me and showed us around the campus grounds. While I was too young at the time to recognize it, my parents knew how special St. Anselm’s was and still is, and they wanted me to be a part of this community. I soon took the entrance exam with Fr. Gabriel and was set to start in August of 1998 as an A Form student, coat and tie and all.

By my third day at St. Anselm’s, I remember asking Fr. Peter how I was ever going to get through this year waking up at 5:30 in the morning and getting home at 6:00 at night, let alone another six years after that. My father asked me to acknowledge that he too had to get up at 5:30 in the morning to get me here, and either he or my mother picked me up every day too. Thank your parents for the sacrifices they are making for you, it is just a glimpse of how much they love you.

In what would become my first lesson of life at St. Anselm’s, Fr. Peter assured me there had in fact been other students to overcome the same endurance test, which is what it seemed like at the time. He also reminded me that while the commute was not exactly ideal, I was at St. Anselm’s for a reason. He and all of the other wonderful faculty believed in me, and they strived to provide me with every opportunity they could, not only for me to succeed academically, athletically, and spiritually; but most importantly, I was also maturing as a young man, shaped in the Benedictine tradition.

During my seven years here at the Abbey, I learned to appreciate and value what St. Anselm’s has to offer. Here are my thoughts and what I want to pass on to you here today.

The Value of a Benedictine Education and Serving Others:

As an upperclassman at St. Anselm’s, you will have the opportunity to contribute two years of service to a civic organization of your choice. Do not let this opportunity pass over you lightly. As Saint Benedict reminds us, “For at all times we must serve Him with the good things He has given us.” The opportunity to show your love of Christ and neighbor is a rewarding experience that I and many of my classmates truly enjoyed, and to this day, we

continue to serve the communities in which we live.

The Value of Learning:

We have all been blessed to attend St. Anselm’s, and receive a truly world class education. You are lucky enough to soon begin the upper school portion of your education and all that comes with it. It will be hard at times, trust me on that one.

But as Fr. Peter reminded me in my first few days here, you would not be here if the school did not think you were completely capable of not only handling, but excelling at your schoolwork. One of the greatest rewards you will find, as my fellow class alumni and I often talk about, is the level of preparedness you will have for college after you graduate from St. Anselm’s. Your hard work in the years to come will pay huge dividends, as you apply to college and continue your growth as young men no matter which university or college you attend.

I leave you with three important thoughts that I would tell myself as a Form II student: First, each day at St. Anselm’s is an opportunity to grow and learn in exceptional ways and to continue to grow as young men and young leaders. The faculty and staff here at St. Anselm’s have dedicated their lives to providing you with the best education not only in this city, but across the country. They are the reason that, when St. Anselm’s alumni walk on campus as college freshmen, many are greeted by their university’s President or Dean and hear the words ‘St. Anselm’s’, only to respond and say how lucky they are to have such a student on campus. Remember, try not to smile and brag too much when this happens to you and take advantage of each day you have here.

Second, sadly a topic that has been in the news more and more often is bullying. Most likely, we have all been the givers and takers of bullying at some point in the past. To young men such as yourselves, sometimes it seems like a great way to socially advance yourself among your peers or just a quick way to get a laugh out of a few friends

at someone else’s expense. It may seem cool or funny, or perhaps you don’t think it’s hurting anyone’s feelings. But in reality, it is the bully’s way of letting the world know that he is uncomfortable and insecure with himself and that he takes it out on others as a means of dealing with this insecurity.

True men stand up for their fellow man when no one else will, when no one else is looking, or when it is the least popular thing to do. You will find as you progress through your high school years, St. Anselm’s students are a close-knit group and the friendships you make now will last long than after you leave this campus. Don’t bully and don’t let others bully.

Third, as far as I know, none of you can drive. Parents, you can probably agree, handing the keys to the family car to your son at this point in his life would be a terrible idea. However scary, it is a reality that is not too far off in the distant future. Gentlemen, God willing, you have the rest of your lives ahead of you to become the men you want to be. Think about your actions

before you get behind the wheel of your family’s car. I have seen too many friends, acquaintances, or colleagues stop thinking, resulting in one mistake that, unfortunately, negatively dictates the rest of their lives and ruins the wonderful opportunities they were so fortunate to have in the first place.

You have all the opportunity in the world. Take advantage of it. Gentlemen, you represent the best this great country has to offer, and while there are challenges ahead for all of you, you will successfully meet them because of the tremendous education that you are receiving here at St. Anselm’s and because of your families that love you so dearly. Be sure to thank your wonderful and loving parents and take advantage of their advice, they really do know a thing or two. And most importantly, rely on God, talk to Him. He is there for you 24/7.

Thank you again for this opportunity to share my experiences and thoughts with you as you transition into the next stage of your lives. And congratulations!

Form II Student SpeakerMATTHEW LASKOWSKIFr. Peter, Mr. Crittenberger, Mr. Mehigan, faculty, staff, parents, and most of all my fellow classmates, I am honored to represent you today. I have been here for three years, but wow, what a journey it has been!

Ever since my brother, Michael, came to the Abbey, I knew that I wanted to follow in his footsteps one day, but I was always scared of going to the Abbey. My old school was much easier and smaller than the Abbey. When I shadowed here, I was met by some of the best hospitality I had ever seen and I knew the Abbey was the right place for me.

Over the last three years, all of us have had many experiences, some of which I would like to share today.

As Saint Benedict reminds us, “For at all times we must serve Him with the good things He has given us.”

We traveled the physical world with Mr. Harwood and the mathematical world with Mr. T. We played around on Microtype all the time in Computers and hoped never to be caught by Mr. Bekoe or Ms. Lane, and most of all we all survived the most difficult questions in the world that were thrown at us by Dr. Wood. Even after just one year, we had all become much better friends, and I could not wait for seventh grade to come. The next year having spent the entire summer reading the Aeneid, we came into Form I and thank goodness we were no longer the youngest students in the school. We experienced a whole new day. Every morning we came into class to have a Cactonian adventure and took a daily quiz, which forced us all to cram before class. We learned how to take very good notes in Mr. Achilles’ class, who always made sure that we studied. Also, we were the first class to recognize Mr. Crittenberger’s passion for football. Finally, for the first time we endured Latin, where Mr. Fries gave us many memorization skills as he made us memorize pages of work.

This past year, we came into Form II and we were now the head of the Middle School. Even though we set a record number of snow days, we all had an amazing time this year. This year, we started yet another language. Some people took Spanish with Mrs. Enzel, others took Arabic with Mrs. Vassar, and the rest took French with Dr. Joseph. This year we also tried to keep up with Mr. Corrigan’s amazingly fast Algebra class and learned how not to fight a bear. We read and acted Shakespeare in Ms. Dunne’s class. Our year ended with Field Day,

where after some controversy, Moore House took home yet another House Cup!

This past year has been filled with achievements out of the classroom as well. Congratulations to the Middle School basketball team for winning a second straight championship. Also, congratulations to the Middle School baseball team, which made it to the PVAC championship game and the Middle School cross country team, which finished second at champs. Finally, congratulations to Quinten Powers, who just last week competed in the National Geographic Bee finals!

Thank you to the entire faculty that has made these three years an amazing time. I would also like to thank my parents, Chris Laskowski and Carol DeFrances, and my brother Michael, who have given me constant support throughout my three years here. If it were not for them, I probably would have never even come here.

Before we all leave today, I would like to say that from the first day in Form A to now, our class has come so close together, which has made such a great community. I am proud to be moving on from Middle School with all these great minds.

Although some of our classmates are leaving, I am sure those who are staying will take the Upper School by storm. Whether you are staying at the Abbey or leaving next year, always remember the words of Saint Benedict, “Always we begin again.” Thank you and congratulations.

“I see the value of a St. Anselm’s education more and more clearly.”

It was 65 years ago this September that I first trudged up the hill to St. Anselm’s (then Priory) School. [At] 13 years of age, I had been taught multiplication, division, cursive hand-writing, and little else. I can’t remember how I learned about St. Anselm’s, but I do remember that academically it was said to be a “cut above” the three other Catholic secondary schools in the metropolitan area. More than a “cut above,” St. Anselm’s turned out to be an intellectual feast; in fact, it changed my life.

At the outset we were given French, Latin, and English Literature texts. I don’t remember the books but I distinctly remember those teachers: Fr. Stephen Reid, Fr. Raymond Eibeck, and Fr. Austin McNamee. I also remember one of our very first assignments: memorize the 10 rules of study; the very idea seemed absurd to me at the time but I can still remember the first 3 and the last, “Avoid fatigue.” They served me well through college and law school.

So how did St. Anselm’s change my life? By teaching me how to study, it taught me how to learn. And, I would argue, the broader and deeper the learning on any topic, the more aware one becomes of the often limitless subtleties and nuances (not to mention the contradictions) within any given field of learning. After a while, looking for those becomes automatic, and, somewhat paradoxically, you are thinking without even thinking about thinking. As a freshman in college I received an A in the most advanced French course and I also received an A on my first term paper on the collected writings of Sigmund Freund.

I have no doubt whatsoever that St. Anselm’s continues to have a profound effect on the lives of each and every one of its students. They may not realize it immediately, just as they may not realize what a privilege it is to attend a world-class secondary school such as St. Anselm’s, but they will.

There is no question that I am now much, much closer to the end than to the beginning. And yet I seem to see some things, such as the value of a St. Anselm’s education, more and more clearly.

C. Richard Stafford,'53

The Devine Family Endowed Scholarship Challenge

Brian, ’59 and Sylvia Devine gathered with fellow alumni in San Diego for a visit from Fr. Peter Weigand, OSB, in July 2014.

Understanding the importance of our Endowed Scholarship Fund as a means to eventually reduce our tuition rates and make it possible for more young men to attend St. Anselm’s, Brian Devine, ’59, his wife, Silvija and their family have shown their commitment by making some extraordinarily generous gifts to the Endowment. In December of 2013, they proposed a Challenge to fellow supporters whereby if the school can raise $1 million by December 31, 2014, they will match the amount with an additional gift of $1 million. This will increase the Endowed Scholarship Fund to more than $7 million and allow us to withdraw nearly $300,000 per year to help fund our Scholarship Aid program.

The school community has donated generously to the Challenge, and we are very close to meeting the goal. By late August, when this Annual Report went to press, we had raised $769,738 – in cash and pledges due in 2014 – toward the $1 million dollar goal.

Below is the list of Campaign gifts received for the 2013-14 fiscal year, and pledges made to be paid within 2014. This list reflects information as of July 31, 2014. A full listing of contributions and the corresponding giving circle will appear in the 2014-15 Annual Report.

“I know it will ensure more boys who have the academic and personality resources to succeed at St. Anselm’s will have the financial support to do so.”

The alumni profiles on the School website testify to the gratitude alumni have for the life-long intellectual curiosity, learning skills, and Benedictine values acquired from an education at St. Anselm’s, and to a desire that talented, deserving boys continue to have that opportunity.

That is precisely the conviction that has motivated me as an alumnus to respond in the past to both the School’s Annual Fund and to special Capital Projects like the renovation of the Upper School building.

Now, I am extremely pleased to have the opportunity to help insure the diversity of the student body for the future by participating in the Devine Million Dollar Challenge to enhance the Endowed Scholarship Fund.

It gives me considerable satisfaction to be a contributor to meeting this Challenge. I know it will ensure that more boys who have the academic and the personality resources to succeed at St. Anselm’s will have the financial support to do so. Mr. David Harnett, ’58

2013-2014 Annual Report | 37

Dear Friends of St. Anselm’s,

As I write this contribution to our school’s Annual Report, many of our monks are away from the monastery for a few days or weeks, some mainly for well-deserved relaxation at the end of the school year, others to become better prepared for their various duties in the Monastery or the School. For example, Br. Ignacio has been taking classes at a Spanish-language school in Cuernavaca, Mexico, as he prepares to teach two Spanish courses next school year, and when he returns from there he will take a course in the New Testament at Catholic University’s Summer Session so as to become even more adept as the teacher of Form II Religion. Our three monks in temporary vows—Brs. Isaiah, Samuel, and Bernard—will soon be returning from a two-week program at St. Vincent Archabbey in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, that will have given them the chance to meet monks from other monasteries who are at the same stage of formation and to hear talks about monastic life by some of the monks of that monastery. Fr. Peter has already visited alumni in New York and Boston and plans to meet still others along the West Coast later this summer. These five, and others, will all be back at the Abbey for our annual retreat in mid-August, to be conducted this year by Fr. Terrence Kardong, OSB, of Assumption Abbey in Richardton, North Dakota. Fr. Terrence already led one of our retreats about 35 years ago, and we are delighted to have him back, for he is unquestionably the premier scholar of things Benedictine in the English-speaking world.

I am happy to report that several men who are seriously interested in joining our community will be our guests during the retreat, so I hope that when I write my letter for next year’s Annual Report I’ll be able to refer to some of them as novices. While we have been blessed with recent profession ceremonies—Br. Ignacio’s on May 24 and those of Brs. Isaiah, Samuel, and Bernard some months earlier—we continue to rank the promotion of vocations as one of our highest priorities. You will already have received a letter from me asking you to encourage men who may well flourish as members of our community to contact me or our vocation director, Fr. Christopher. I earnestly repeat that request here!

Every bit as important as encouraging new members is the need for those of us who are already monks to live as faithfully as we can. As you know, a crucial aspect of Benedictine life is the liturgy. Thanks largely to the hard work of Fr. Gabriel, we now have new editions of all our Vespers music, and he, Fr. Joseph, and Br. Samuel have also collaborated to produce very attractive new booklets for Morning Prayer on Sundays. We also continue to use at weekday Mass the excellent music of Dom Alan Rees in the Belmont Abbey English Gradual, a wonderful example of the power of collaboration among monasteries of our English Benedictine Congregation. As always, you are most welcome to join us at any of our liturgical services.

Let me conclude by thanking those of you who have made monetary contributions to the Abbey over the past 12 months. We have gratefully listed your names in a special section of this Report and assure you of our regular prayers for all of our benefactors.

Sincerely yours,

James A. Wiseman, OSBAbbot
