Have you considered running for a seat on our next Council? It is important for all to play a role within
fraternity. How might you serve? Electing a new council will bring new dynamics to the fraternity. A rep-
resentative from the Region will be present to officiate our elections. If you wish to be on the ballot for a
particular person or wish to nominate someone, please contact Herman or Sharon. Herman and Sharon
are in the process of asking those who have been nominated by other people. Please be open to serving.
If you are elected, you will have the support of the prior Council members and your fraternity. Please pray
for our elections and please be open to how the Holy Spirit is calling you to participate in your fraternity.
Perceptive Commentary: Guenois, Lott Thavis By Phil Lawler (bio - articles - send a comment) | March 12, 2013 3:56 PM
In the last days and hours before the opening of the conclave this afternoon, a few analysts added useful thoughts about what we should expect—and what we should not expect—during and after the papal election.
For those who read French, Jean-Marie Guenois of Le Figaro offers some important cautions. The cardinal-electors are not neatly divided, he says; it is misleading to think of national or ideological voting blocs. Journalists, and the public at large, can easily be entranced by an “exotic alternative” candidate, who will actually not command much support among the cardinals. Many of the rumors that circulate in the final hours before the conclave are misleading, he adds—sometimes intentionally so. Guenois remarks that the cardinals’ first ballot on Tuesday afternoon is the equivalent of a primary election, showing which candidates have support broad enough to remain in the running.
Jeremy Lott of RealClear Religion asks the unwelcome but important sobering question: What If You Get a Bad Pope? If you are unhappy with the conclave’s selection, don’t despair. Your assessment of the new Pontiff may be wrong. Even if you’re right—even if his pontificate is a disaster—the Church will survive. Citing the remarks of then-Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger from 1997, Lott points out that nothing in Church teaching guarantees that the cardinals will select the right man for the job. The Holy Spirit guides the Church, but (again quoting Cardinal Ratzinger) “probably the only assurance He offers is that the thing cannot be totally ruined.”
Looking forward a few days, longtime Vatican correspondent John Thavis suggests Seven steps for a new pope in a USA Today column. Among his ideas: a thorough housecleaning, replacing most Vatican officials; regular weekly “cabinet” meetings with the heads of Roman dicasteries; 5-year term limits (renewable at the Pontiff’s discretion) for offi-cials of the Roman Curia; and either the reform or the abolition of the Vatican bank.

Please pray for our Universal Church and that through God we will have good leadership.

"Why" Franciscan? As sure as I am of anything, there is no
doubt that every Professed Secular Franciscan has asked
themselves, "Why?" Why did I become a Franciscan? Many
joined because they knew a Franciscan; a priest, brother, sis-
ter, religious or someone who modeled a 'special' charism.
Others, may have been inspired by Francis himself. His
strong, passionate love of his Lord, with the ultimate anointing
of the Stigmata which Francis endured during the final days of
his life. But, as compelling as Francis' life story was and as
interesting, and in many ways, inspiring as the lived lives of
other Franciscans are or were, why did 'we' become Francis-
cans? Also, does our answer still determine our vocation to-
day? First, I think we need to focus in on what is our particular
or personal "Truth". The Gospels speak of 'truth' numerous
times on different occasions. Confronting one's definition of
truth, while important, has to stand the test of what is
'absolute truth'. Francis found all that he could possibly desire
in the life of Jesus, and God blessed it. Francis' nature was, if
you allow it, more 'black and white', without too much, if any,
grey! But he did not compromise with the Principles, Doctrine,
Divine Beliefs, of the Catholic faith. He had the 'spirit of St.
Peter, the passion of St. Paul, with the enduring Love of St.
John. Because he was worthy of these gifts and enhanced
them abundantly with a certain "Pizzazz" (in the words of a
Friar Friend of mine) he was a magnet for many who wished to
emulate his life. He always seemed to take the 'hard road',
with extremes in his actions, such as his fasts and pushing his
physical endurance to limits most couldn't handle. He set the
'bar' for his followers with the incredible events witnessed by
many, such as the 'mountain on fire' and his long spiritual
trances where he was 'talking to God'.
This is what brought me to the Franciscans. The Life and
Spirit of St. Francis which guides the Orders and which, ac-
cording to prophecy, will last to THE END. Lord, grant us all a
'double portion' of the Spirit of Francis, to bring to our world,
now and always.
God of All Good, You have blessed us with the gift of Francis and our call to the Franciscan way of Life.
But we are frail and often lacking in understanding of what this truly means to our life.
We pray, Good and Gracious Lord, that You will guide us in how to live our call
in our interior life,
our family life,
our fraternal life,
our Church life,
in the market place,
the work place,
and the quiet places of our hearts,
in Your Will,
Not our own,
always in the footsteps of Your servant Francis
toward Christ, the Son,
praying to be Spirit filled.
Amen!

“Oh holy Father, protect them with your name whom you gave me out of the world. I entrusted to them the message you entrusted to me and they received it. They have known that in truth I came from you, they have believed that it was you who sent me. For these I pray, not for the world. Bless and consecrate them, and I consecrate myself for their sakes. I do not pray for them alone; I pray also for those who will believe in me through their word that they may be holy by being one as we are. And I desire, Father, to have them in my company where I am to see this glory of mine in your kingdom.” (Jesus as quoted in the Prologue to the Rule of the Secular Franciscan Order.)
