Parish Mission Statement We, the parish family of St. Anthony Roman Catholic Church welcome all, young and old, active or inactive, committed
or alienated, to enrich their lives by joining and participating in our faith community. We seek to reflect the light of Jesus
Christ by reaching out to serve all, and by sharing our joy and hope, as we continue our faith journey. May our lives,
inspired by the Holy Spirit, and nourished by the Eucharist, bear witness to our love for neighbors near and far.
ST. ANTHONY PARISH COHASSET, MA
Dear Parishioners,
During these hazy, lazy days of summer the Church pauses to
celebrate the feast of some significant saints. Although her feast
will not be celebrated publicly this year because it falls on
Sunday, the 22nd of July is the feast of St. Mary Magdalene, to
whom was given the privilege of being the first to whom the
risen Jesus appeared. The opening prayer on her feast day states
that Jesus “first entrusted to Mary Magdalene the joyful news of
his resurrection” and the gospels tell us that she was sent to the
disciples to make this reality known.
Among the women who followed Jesus during his public
ministry, Mary Magdalene is always mentioned first and it would
seem that she was the leader of this group who used their means
to provide for Jesus and his apostles. St. Gregory the Great in a
homily said: “We should reflect on Mary’s attitude and the great
love she felt for Christ, for though the disciples had left the tomb
she remained. She was still seeking the one she had not found,
she longed for him who she thought had been taken away. We
pray that we, too, may be filed with the same faithful love that
kept Mary Magdalene close to Christ.”
Then on Monday we celebrate the feast of Saint Bridget. Born
to wealthy parents in Upland, Sweden, Bridget was favored with
visions and revelations from the age of seven. Her revelations
remained into her adulthood. She urged the popes to return to
Rome when they had left for Avignon and after spending four
years in prayer in a Cistercian monastery, she founded the Order
of the Most Holy Trinity known as the Brigittine nuns. On
Wednesday we celebrate the feast of St. James the Apostle whose
statue graces the wall beside the South Main Street entrance into
the church. James, the brother of John was the first called by
Jesus to be closely associated with Jesus throughout his public
ministry. He was a privileged witness at the Transfiguration, was
present at the raising of the daughter of Jairus to life and was
present during the agony of Jesus in Gethsemane. There is an old
tradition that he preached the Gospel in Spain before returning to
Jerusalem where he was martyred by Herod Antipas who had
him beheaded.
Finally, on Thursday we pause to honor Saints Joachim and
Anne, the parents of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The names of the
parents of Mary are found in the Protoevangelium of James, and
veneration to St. Anne originated in the sixth century while
devotion to Saint Joachim dates from the eighth century. Sincerely,
Fr John R. Mulvehill

We are back from our first mission in Honduras. Our first year
was full of amazing events and of course some struggles. We
were able to work with our Honduran workers and we got a lot of
work completed. The main foundation was done as well as some
steel work for the main columns. The youth did a lot of digging
and making the components for the columns. There were huge
boulders and rocks moved and put in place for the foundation.
Plenty of concrete was mixed and poured. We celebrated Mass
together on two occasions. The building was great, but the real
mission is the building of our faith. Praying and working
alongside people from a different country, a foreign language,
and a different economic background taught us one very
important thing. We were not there to tell anyone what to do or
how to build. We were not there to save them. We were there to
work alongside and pray together for one simple reason. We are
all equal in the eyes of God.

women in your loving hands. Protect them as they

We ask this in the name of Jesus, Our Lord and Savior
Amen
