Can you be one of one-hundred to give one percent? Take Father Matt’s challenge to match 1% of his final gift to this year’s Bishop’s Appeal. If we can get 100 people to step up and meet this challenge, then we will have made our Bishop’s Appeal goal for the 3rd consecutive year! Your 1% will amount to an additional gift of $11 from you. Let’s git ‘er done! You may make your gift through the parish office or by simply putting your gift in an envelope marked “Fr. Matt’s Challenge: Bishop’s Appeal”, and placing it in the collection at Mass.
Beginning in October the Religious Education students in grades 1-5 will bring
up the Gifts during Mass. If you have a Mass intention scheduled for a weekend Mass and would like to bring forward the gifts, please contact Dawn Johnson or the
Parish Office so we don’t schedule a student to do so.

*****POT LUCK FOR ADORERS***** And families
IN CELEBRATION OF THE 17TH YEAR OF PERPETUAL ADORATION SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 15, 2013 3PM at St. Mary & St. Joseph Church
THE CHAPLET OF DIVINE MERCY WILL BE RECITED IN CHURCH, FOLLOWED BY A POTLUCK MEAL.
Please bring a dish to pass if attending.
Fr. Matt’s Corner: . . . I will rise and go to
my father. . .
Greetings to you, my dear friends in Christ. Thanks
be to God that in Him, two things come together that we mere
mortals have great difficulty both giving and accepting: mercy
and judgment. This saying is trustworthy and deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. Of these I am the foremost. But for that reason I was
mercifully treated.
Sadly, in place of God’s mercy and judgment – in
place of love and truth, in place of peace and beauty – our
modern culture tries to substitute something we have come to
call ‘tolerance’. This ‘tolerance’ has convinced most of us that
“I’m ok; you’re ok.” It says, “Whatever you want to do is ok
as long as you don’t ‘hurt’ anybody.”
The Devil is behind this ‘tolerance’ – I’m convinced
that it’s his favorite trick nowadays. The basic problem with
‘tolerance’ is twofold. First, it denies that there is such a thing
as objective Truth and Goodness. It is the Devil’s oldest trick,
because it convinces us that we decide for ourselves what is
good and evil – or rather – that there is no evil because we are
god, and there is no other. We have become depraved, making for ourselves a molten calf and worshiping it, sacrificing to it
and crying out, 'This is your God, O Israel, who brought you out of the land of Egypt!'
Second, it has divorced the virtues of love and mercy
from their proper object. Rather than loving the sinner and
hating the sin, we have denied that there is any sin at all so that
we have come to love the sin and hate the sinner. This saying is trustworthy and deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came
into the world to save sinners. When we say that we have not
sinned (because we have decided that our inactions and our
actions are not sins at all) then we have closed off the door to
Jesus Christ who came into the world to save sinners.
When I decide not to go to Mass, I have decided that I
don’t need Jesus Christ because there is no sin in my life – I
am god and I declare that sin does not exist. When we say that
contraception and abortion and child abuse and homosexual
activity and ‘hooking up’ and pornography and (…) are ok,
then we have denied the Truth; then there is no room for God’s
mercy; then there is repression, violence, anger, and hatred.
Just look around (at our schools, in our homes, and even in our
parish) and open your eyes to see where Satan has led us.
But now, let us say ‘I shall get up and go to my father
and I shall say to him, "Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I no longer deserve to be called your son; treat me as you would treat one of your hired workers."’ Come
to the sacrament of reconciliation and let us see once more
God’s great mercy as our Father replies: 'Quickly bring the
finest robe and put it on him; put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. Take the fattened calf and slaughter it.
Then let us celebrate with a feast, because this son of mine was dead, and has come to life again; he was lost, and has been found.'
Peace to all of you, my friends, this Holy Day, and to
all who love the Lord in simplicity of heart,
Fr. Matt
Ask Father: This week’s question: “Is ‘Do Not Resuscitate’
euthanasia?”
Your question gives us the opportunity to provide a
wee bit of guidance on an important and often confusing
issue, so – as always, thanks for asking!
First off, before we begin here, we should clarify
some terms. By euthanasia, we’re not referring to Chinese
children – but rather the practice of ending the life of
someone in an attempt to prevent suffering. This is most
often thought of in the case of an elderly and/or terminally
ill person, but is being considered more and more in the case
of disabled children and others.
“Do not resuscitate” (DNR), in this context, has
very little to do with the Department of Natural Resources;
rather, it refers to an “order” not to attempt to revive a
particular individual if she stops breathing and/or her heart
stops beating (as in CPR or the use of electrical/chemical
stimulants to restart the heart).
Euthanasia is always morally evil, since God alone
is the author and master of life. Euthanasia is a direct
violation of the 5th
Commandment (see CCC 2276 – 2279).
In dealing with end-of-life medical treatment, we need to
make an important distinction between ordinary treatment
(things like providing hydration and nutrition and medical
treatments that have a reasonable chance of success without
imposing an undue burden or risk) and extraordinary
treatment (those actions which have little chance of
providing a real benefit and which also impose a great risk
or burden). Ordinary treatments should always be provided,
whereas extraordinary treatments may legitimately be
refused.
So, let’s look at something like a ‘DNR order’.
There are times when providing CPR may truly be
considered extraordinary. For example, if I am in the final
stages of dying from pancreatic cancer or some other
incurable disease, then CPR would be unlikely to provide
much benefit; or, if I was a 104 year-old woman with severe
osteoporosis, then CPR would likely pose a great risk of
severe injury without a great foreseeable benefit. In cases
such as these, a DNR would not involve any act of
euthanasia. However, in most other cases, a DNR order
could very well inhibit medical personnel from saving my
life, and could be seen as a form of euthanasia.
An important principle to keep in mind in all of
these decisions is that our physical and spiritual condition is
always in flux, and so blanket medical orders in advance
directives or ‘living wills’ are not a good idea. Rather, you
should appoint someone (called a “health care agent”) that
you trust to make decisions for you in the event that you are
unable to communicate. You should discuss your wishes
with this person, and assure that they will not act in a way that contradicts Catholic teaching.
I know that this response has been (by necessity) a
little sketchy and brief, so if you have more questions or a
different way of looking at this one, please sign on to our
website and post a response under the “Ask Father” section
in the “Forum” area. And keep those questions coming!
May God bless you now and always!
