And so we would suppose that the stories of Jesus East- er appearances would be totally positive. In today s Gospel, Jesus appears to the disciples who rejoice; He breathes the Holy Spirit upon them, and assists Thomas in overcoming his doubt. All this is positive. But not everything is joyful! There is a shadow in the midst of this joy prompting us to ask, What are the wounds doing there? Why does the body of the Risen Lord still retain the wounds? Is not Good Friday over? Is not Easter a new beginning? Why then do the nail marks and the gash in Jesusside remain? These questions seem to pose a problem. But it emerges as a gift. The wounds in the body of the Risen Christ, do not indicate that the resurrection is incomplete. In fact, they show its power. The Risen Jesus re-defines what joy is! Often times, we think of joy as being happy: we imagine a perfect situation without trouble or pain or we picture a serene place, without trouble ever intruding. But, adopting this ap- proach to happiness, renders joy inaccessible to us, because trouble and pain are consistently part of our real lives: loss of someone we love; mistakes made and consequences; and hurts we cannot heal. As these negative events come to us, our im- mediate reaction is to try to push them away and forget about them. We just want to look ahead and move on. But these trou- bles follow us. And every time we think of them, they rob us of joy. This is why Jesus re-defines joy. The wounds in the Risen body of Christ tell us that the way to be happy is not to forget our loss, not to deny our mistakes, not to ignore our pain. Instead, we are called to accept these negative realities and to make them a part of a new body, a new body dedicated to life. When we accept and include the negative things in our life, rather than deny, we gain the power to transform them. When we take the wounds, gashes and nail marks and make them part of a new body, a body dedicated to generosity, to hope and to love, then the destructive power of those wounds is neutralized and rendered powerless over us. There are some wounds we will never erase. We will nev- er forget the loss of someone that we love, or the mistakes we have made. There will always be certain fear or sadness as part of our life. But, if we can accept and make them a part of a new body, they need not paralyze us. Like the wounds in JesusRis- en body, the wounds in our life will not disappear. But they need not rob us of joy. They can become a part of a new kind of happiness. They can be signs of a wounded past whose memory does not mar the power of a resurrected life. • STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION . . . “Jesus said to them again, ‘Peace be with you.

As the Father has sent me, so I send you.’” John 20:21

Peace – the first gift of the Risen Lord. Just as Jesus sent the apostles out into the world, so too, He sends us. As disciples of

Jesus, we are called to be grateful and generous. Look for opportunities to share His peace, not only within our

local parish boundaries, but outside of them as well. In giving, we receive the peace of Jesus Christ.

“BUILDING OUR FUTURE UPON A FOUNDATION

OF FAITH” This weekend marks the launch of our annual Project Advance Appeal. Thanks to the generosity of our donors last year, the 2018 Appeal raised $121,500. With these funds our parish was able to contribute to the projects undertaken by the Archdiocese, in-cluding the major renovations to St. Thomas Aquinas High School in North Vancouver. Over $ 70,000 was returned to our parish from the 2018 Appeal. The PA funds are very important to our parish because they allow us to undertake special projects, such as the kitchen renovations, and to make plans for long-term projects necessary for the care of our church. The Sunday collections pay for the day-to-day operations of the parish. We are asking again for your generous support. This week you will receive a letter with information about this year’s Ap-peal and a pledge card. We request that you return your pledge card next weekend, or as soon as you are able. (You can also donate at www.projectadvance.ca. We will be at the back of the church for the next few weekends if you need assistance. All donations regardless of the amount are important and gratefully received. By our deeds, we show our thanks for the many gifts we have received. May God bless everyone. ST. ANDRÉ’S VISITORS’ MEETING Tuesday, April 30th, 1:00 PM in Parish Hall

Saint Andre Bessette of Montreal was known for his healing ministry to the sick. We, at St. Anthony’s Parish have renamed our visitors’ program after this most humble of Saints. We are also in the process of implementing changes that will bring us into line with the new Archdiocesan Safe Environment policies and are recruiting new members to the program. All existing members of the program and anyone else who is interested in visiting the sick and /or bringing them the Holy Eucharist should attend this meeting. Fr. Larry Lynn
