PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS AWARENESS WEEK 6-13 August

Loving and Generous God,

it is You who call us by name

and ask us to follow You.

Help us to grow in the Love

and Service of our Church

as we experience it today.

Give us the energy and courage

of Your Spirit

to shape its future

Grant us faith-filled leaders

who will embrace Christ's Mission

of love and justice.

Bless the Church of Wollongong

by raising up dedicated and generous leaders

from our families and friends

who will serve Your people as Sisters,

Priests, Brothers, Deacons and Lay Ministers.

Inspire us to know You better

and open our hearts

to hear Your call.

We ask this through our Lord.

PRAYER FOR MARY MACKILLOP—FEAST DAY 8 AUGUST

O God, source of all goodness,

who have shown us in Saint Mary

a woman of faith living by the power of the Cross,

teach us, we pray, by her example

to live the gospel in changing times

and to respect and defend

the human dignity of all in our land.

Through our Lord.

BISHOPS’ SOCIAL JUSTICE STATEMENT ON THE ECONOMY We

celebrate Social Justice Sunday on 24 September. This year,

the Australian Bishops’ Social Justice Statement is titled:

‘Everyone’s Business: Developing an inclusive and sustainable

economy’. The Statement calls for an economy that is founded

on justice and offers dignity and inclusion to every person.

THE JOURNEY CATHOLIC RADIO PROGRAM AIRS 6 August

2017 This week on the Journey the Gospel of Matthew is

read by our very own Nick Weir and reflected on by Fr Richard

Healey. Trish McCarthy offers us a change of pace in her

“Milk & Honey” segment. We are so very blessed to hear re-

flections from Sam Clear and Fr Dave Callaghan. The music

that has been selected is a peaceful and inspiring balance

helping us to create a show that is all about faith, hope, love

and life.

A PEAK EXPERIENCE

Experiences influence us much more profoundly than talks

and lectures. Even though we may not be able to analyse

them, we know they affect us (for good or ill), and continue to

do so for years afterwards.

The experience on Mount Tabor had great significance, first

of all for Jesus himself. It came at a crucial moment in his

public life – at the start of his journey to Jerusalem. He knew

that the same fate awaited him there as befell all the proph-

ets, namely, a violent death. Naturally he recoiled from such a

fate. In order to reflect on it and pray about it, he climbed to

the top of Mount Tabor, taking Peter, James and John with

him.

As soon as they reached the top, Jesus began to pray. During

his prayer, Moses and Elijah appeared to him and spoke to

him about his forthcoming passion. More important, he expe-

rienced the presence of God. And he heard again the wonder-

ful words of affirmation he had heard at his baptism: ‘You are

my beloved son;

I am pleased with you’.

On Mount Tabor Jesus felt himself comforted, reassured, af-

firmed and strengthened for the ordeal ahead. It wasn’t that

everything became rosy. In fact, nothing changed. He still had

to face a dark and threatening future. But he knew that some-

how it was what God wanted from him, and that God would

give him the strength to face it.

But the experience was also of great importance for the three

apostles who were with him on the mountain. It confirmed

their faith in Jesus and helped them to face the dark future

with him.

The Tabor experience could be called ‘a peak experience’. We

too can have peak experiences or moments of transfigura-

tion. We can have intense experiences of light, peace, unity,

joy, exhilaration, meaning … and of the presence of God.

These are true moments of grace which can be triggered off

not only by prayer, but by poetry, music, nature … but they are

more likely to be the fruit of suffering and painful struggle.

After that wonderful experience on the mountain Jesus and

the apostles had to go back down and resume the journey to

Jerusalem. After a peak experience we too have to come

down from the ‘mountain’ and return to the plain or valley,

where life goes on in the darkness of faith. True religion does

not encourage escape from life, but helps us to commit our-

selves more deeply to it.

When have you felt most certain about your faith?

… On the Way to Mass

What’s the most amazing movie you ever saw about someone

or something that is changed into something else?

On the Way Home from Mass …

Put yourself on top of that mountain with Jesus and the three

Apostles.

What do you think the Apostles really saw?
