End of Step Up – End of the Year
As this is the last week of formal classes this will also be the last newsletter for 2020. It would be an
understatement to say that 2020 has been a different year – and we encourage everyone to make the
most of the Christmas Break to re-charge your batteries – catch up with family and friends – and most
importantly – Stay Safe.
Thanks Mr. Bretherton
On Tuesday, the staff thanked Mr. Bretherton for his last five weeks at the College as a Pre-Service
Teacher. Mr. Bretherton has worked mainly with the PE Department, with students in junior year
levels. Josh thanked the College for the opportunity and we wish him all the best for the rest of his
studies.
Activities Days
Next Monday 14 and Tuesday 15 December, we have planned two full days of activities to help
celebrate the end of the year for the students. With the current weather forecast, Day One will be at
Lake Wooroonook and the second based at the College. We would like to remind all students who are
attending the Lake Day that they must bring their own lunch – either packed sandwich or the like, or
something to cook on a BBQ. Students will need a towel and a broad brimmed hat and sunscreen.
Students will also be required to bring their lunch with them on Tuesday for their activities. The two
activities days are normal school days in regards to attendance. If students are unable to attend
the activities days, absence notes are still required.
Interviews by Request Days
The last three days of the year have been set aside to allow time for interviews with identified students
to discuss schooling and career pathways. If you are required for an interview you will be contacted
by a Year Level Coordinator or teacher.
Presentation Evening
As you will no doubt be aware, this year’s Presentation Evening will be held on Thursday January
28, 2021. This will allow us to have a ceremony which will acknowledge the achievements of all
students and to formally farewell our Year 12 cohort as a school community. At this stage with the
current restrictions, we are hoping to have the ceremony in the Town Hall. If this is not possible, we
will hold it outdoors under the new basketball cover at school. We will make sure that announcements
are made through Compass, Facebook and our Website.
New Website
If you have not yet had the opportunity, I encourage you to have a look at our newly developed and
upgraded Website. It is much brighter and easier to navigate your way around and is mobile device
friendly. The new website will allow us to provide more up-to-date information about our College.
Farewells
Normally we would do our farewells at Presentation Evening, but as this is not occurring until January
next year, this is the only opportunity we have to publically farewell staff.
Miss. Marcy Britten is returning to Dimboola Memorial Secondary College next year. Marcy came to
the College this year to help fill a part time position to teach Year 12 Psychology and Year 10 English.
With remote and flexible learning, combined with working part-time, we may not have seen Marcy as
much as in a normal year, but we wish her all the very best in her return to her base school.
Mr. Craig Cornwell is taking six months leave at the beginning of next year. We hope he is able to
have an enjoyable break and look forward to seeing him back in Semester 2 next year.

Hands on Learning
Page 4
Last Friday, the Hands on
Learning students were hard at
work renovating the old Staff
Room. This space is to be trans-
formed into a new Conference
Room. The students assisted
Jason Burke refurbish the room
by removing the old carpet.
The students found great pleas-
ure in discovering treasures left
buried under the floorboards.
They found a plethora of items
including old workbooks, shoes,
coke cans, books and assorted craft items. These items will look wonderful
on display in the new Conference Room when it is open. There is still quite a
bit of work to go, but we are hopeful that works will be completed during
Term 1 of 2021.
History Recovered
Page 5
The College is presently upgrading what was previously the Library and
then a Staffroom in the 1875 Main Building, and upon removing floorboards
a hoard of past student works and rel-
ics were found.
An English and Mathematics Graph
book and initialled pencil case cover
was discovered belonging to local past
student Len Reid. Len was a student
at St. Arnaud High School in 1962 -
1963, and he was reunited with the
items this week.
Len recalls his English teacher was
Miss. Emmett and his Maths Teacher
was Mr. Peter Alexander. Principals
for his time at the High School were
Mr. C. Cornall and Mr. J. Flynn.
Len travelled to the High School each
day on the Coonooer Bridge bus, which
was driven by Mr. Ian Jennings. The
Coonooer Bridge bus run still contin-
ues today, with his children Chris,
Tanya and Simon all travelling on the
same bus to school during their time at the school in the 1990’s.
Len was proud to recall that he was Dux of his 2B Class in 1963 and fin-
ished school in the same year to work on the family farm at Coonooer
Bridge.
Len has had a long-standing association with the College, serving as a
School Councillor, Building & Grounds Committee member and serving on
the Charlton TAFE Board in the 1990’s.
Thanks Josh

Over the past 5 weeks Josh Bretherton has been
completing his 3rd year placement at St. Arnaud
Secondary College. Josh is currently completing
his teaching degree at Victoria University and
hails from Brighton in Melbourne, and chose
St. Arnaud as a destination through his connec-
tions with the Jackson family playing hockey
together at MCC. Josh fully immersed himself
within the College, teaching and assisting in
Physical Education, Health and our Hands On
Learning classes. Josh has been an absolute
pleasure to have, and we wish him all the best
for the rest of his course and his future endeav-
ours!
Don’t forget if you missed the VSSS concert on Saturday night on Channel 7
it will also be available for catch-up viewing on the 7plus app and 7plus website –
www.7plus.com.au – website for 30 days from the broadcast date.
EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST FOR 2021 Next year, the Performing Arts Unit has decided to once again do a virtual concert
using their studio in Collingwood to film each student individually with the best light-
ing, sound, costumes and cameras in a made for television event.
Each school in Mass Dance will spend one day at the Collingwood studio being filmed.
Choreographers, Deon and Hara will be there to work with individual students so that
they get the best result on film. The students will only have to learn certain pieces of
choreography from 3 songs…. but not the whole song. The end result will once again
be achieved by inserting many squares of video onto a grid to give the effect of a mass
dance. Sounds like a lot of fun! It will be a great opportunity to film in a studio,
something very different for us.
The first rehearsal will be provided online but they are hoping that the second re-
hearsal will be held at each school. We need to know how many St Arnaud students
are interested by 9pm Friday 11th December. If VSSS is something you would like to
be involved in next year please message or call Deb Feeny with your expression of in-
terest on 0429 956275.
Thank you and looking forward to an exciting VSSS in 2021!

Smile Squad is on the way to our school! All children deserve a healthy smile and the Smile Squad are coming to St. Arnaud Secondary College to help make sure this happens. Smile Squad is a $321.9 million Victorian Government program that provides free dental care to all Victorian public primary and secondary school students. The friendly Smile Squad dental team will visit St. Arnaud Sec-ondary College soon to conduct a free annual dental health ex-amination for every student and provide free follow up treatment as needed.
What do parents need to do? We just need you to provide consent. Please read and sign the consent forms that came home with your child and return them to the classroom teacher. The Smile Squad team will then check your child’s teeth and mouth and show them how to keep their teeth healthy and strong. They will also provide any preventive services you have consented for. If your child needs more treatment, the Smile Squad will contact you. Who is Smile Squad? The bright orange Smile Squad vans are staffed by experienced oral health therapists, dental ther-apists, dental assistants and dentists. They all have lots of experience treating children and a pas-sion for improving their oral health – for life. Learn more about the Smile Squad by visiting www.smilesquad.vic.gov.au or contact the team at [email protected].
