From the Office of

Liturgy and Music

The next of the minor orders or

“ministries” as they are now known is

that of "lector." It also has the specific

meaning of a person who has been

"instituted" as a lector and is thus not

synonymous with the term “reader”

which refers to a lay person who has

not received the formal rite of institu-

tion as a lector. Lectors were formerly

classed as one of the four minor or-

ders and in recent centuries were

generally conferred only on those

preparing for ordination to the priest-

hood. Instituted lectors, who are all

men, are obliged, when proclaiming

the readings at Mass, to wear an alb.

The General Instruction of the Roman

Missal speaks as follows of those who,

without being lectors in the specific

sense, carry out their functions at

Mass: "In the absence of an instituted

lector, other lay people may be de-

puted to proclaim the readings from

Sacred Scripture, people who are

truly suited to carrying out this func-

tion and carefully prepared, so that

by their hearing the readings from the

sacred texts the faithful may con-

ceive in their hearts a sweet and living

affection for Sacred Scripture." The

same document lists the lector's spe-

cific duties at Mass.

Diocesan and Cathedral News

Pope Francis Lenten Direction 1. “[Lent] is a ‘powerful’ season, a turning point that can foster change and

conversion in each of us. We all need to improve, to change for the better.

Lent helps us and thus we leave behind old habits and the lazy addiction to

the evil that deceives and ensnares us.” – General Audience, March 5, 2014

2. “Lent is a fitting time for self-denial; we would do well to ask ourselves what we

can give up in order to help and enrich others by our own poverty. Let us not

forget that real poverty hurts: no self-denial is real without this dimension of

penance. I distrust a charity that costs nothing and does not hurt.”

– Lenten Message, 2014

3. “Indifference to our neighbor and to God also represents a real temptation for

us Christians. Each year during Lent we need to hear once more the voice of

the prophets who cry out and trouble our conscience. God is not indifferent

to our world; he so loves it that he gave his Son for our salvation.”

–Lenten Message, 2015

24 Hours for the Lord Over the past few years, Pope Francis has designated a beautiful “moment” for

the Lenten Season, in which particular attention is given to creating a special

opportunity for penitence, prayer, and worship of our Lord in the Eucharist.

One such moment of grace will be, again this year, the “24 Hours for the Lord” initi-

ative, which invites the entire Church community to celebrate the Sacrament of

Reconciliation in the context of Eucharistic Adoration. In 2018, inspired by the

words of Psalm 130:4, “With you is forgiveness”, this will take place from Friday, 9

March to Saturday, 10 March. In each Deanery, at least one church will remain

open for twenty-four consecutive hours, offering an opportunity for both Eucharis-

tic Adoration and Sacramental Confession. Please join us:
