ThisfallpromisestobeaveryexcitingtimeatSt.Augustine’s.Beginningat7pmonTuesday,September22,weareholdingaParishConferencewithTheRev.CanonKevinMartin,recentlyretiredDeanofSt.Matthew’sCathedralintheDioceseofTexas.Heisaninspiringspeakerandaforemostexpertinthefieldofcongregationaldevelopment.IamconfidentthathisvisitandcounselwillbeofmajorassistanceinfacilitatingbothspiritualandnumericalgrowthinourparishfamilyOtherreasonsforexcitementinourcongregationcanbegleanedwhilereadingthroughthisissueofTheHippoHeraldaboutthevariedprograms,coursesandactivitiesstartingthisfall.IamalsoexcitedabouttherecentformingofaTaskForcetoexploreoptionsforourparishinrespondingtotherefugeecrisisinNorthAfricaandEurope.Themostvisiblecauseforexcitementisthebeautifulandyetverypracticalrenovationtoourchurchbuilding.PeopleinLethbridgehavereallynoticedthattherearethingsgoingonatSt.Augustine’sandeverywhereIgofolksareaskingmeaboutourbuildingproject.Ourbuildingrenovationisdesignedtomakeourchurchmoreaccessibleandthereforemorewelcomingtoasmanypeopleaspossible.IamconfidentthatinthecomingmonthsyouandIwillseemanyvisitorscomingtochecktheplaceout.Keepaneyeoutforthemandwelcomethem!Pleaseintroducethemtoothermembersofourchurchandtakethemforcoffee.HelpthemtoexperiencethehospitalitywhichisoneofthespiritualgiftsofSt.Augustine’s.IencourageyoutoinviteanyoneyouknowwhohasattendedSt.Augustine’sinthepastbuthasnotbeenhereforawhile,especiallyanyoneyouknowwhousesawheelchairorwalker.Anumberofthosefolkshavestoppedcomingbecauseof

Arewethereyet?Withthepassingoftimeandthesteadyworkoftheconstructioncrew,theSt.Augustine’srenovationsaremovingcloserandclosertocompletion.Wenolongerneedtoimaginewhatitwillbelike,wecanseemuchofitalready.Manyofuscanhardlywaittoseeandenjoythebeautyofthenewglassed-inentrancethatwillprotectthechildrenfromthecoldastheygototheirSundaySchoolclasses,thenewlylandscapedcourtyard,theextralightfilteringthroughtheSt.Mary-the-Virginstainedglasswindowsintothemorespaciousnarthex,theavailabilityofthenewprayerroom—aquietandprivatespaceforourweeklyofferingoftheministryofpersonalprayerfollowingworshipservices.Manyarealsoeagerlyawaitingtheconvenienceoframpaccessintothebuilding,whichwillhelptoreducethechallengeofsevendifferentlevelsinthechurch,andelevatoraccesstothecoffeehourinthecrypt,withoutwhichfellowshipatSt.Augustine’sisnowunthinkable.Whengroundisexcavatedaftersixtyyears,unforeseendiscoveries,perhapsmoreembarrassingthanserious,canalwaysbeexpected.Buildontherock!Knowwheretofindlivingwater!—theChurchisknownforsuchsoundscripturalexhortations.Imaginetheconsternation,then,whenduringtherenovationsthebelltowerwasfoundnottobebuiltonanyfoundationofanysort,andwhencontractorsrupturedanunsuspectedwaterlinethatwasnotmarkedonanycityutilitiesmap.Suchdiscoveriescanmakeusasachurchflockfeelquitesheepish.Despitealittleunwanted“livingwater”inthecrypt,however,littleharmwasdone,asprojectarchitectBethSongerassuresus,andthenewstructurewasabletobere-engineered.Wecanrejoicethatthankstothehardworkofthefundraisingcommitteetheparishhasfullyembracedthevisionofanaccessiblechurchandcontinuestogivegenerouslyuntilourgoalofcompletefinancingisreached.Andnowthatwearewithinsightofthisgoal,Jamesremindsusthat:TheprimaryreasonforourrenovationistomakeSt.Augustine’saccessibletoall.SuchagoalisconsistentwithourcalltoembodysomethingofthehospitalityandwelcomeofourLordJesusChristwhoinviteseveryoneintoalivingrelationshipwithhimandhispeople.Letusbemindfulofthisultimategoal:tobeasinclusiveandashospitabletowardsourcommunityasourLordisgenerousandlovingtowardsall.TimPope,Co-editor,HippoHerald

Ifso,youhavebeen“MarkedbyMission”“MarkedbyMission”wasthethemeforthe48thSessionoftheSynodoftheEcclesiasticalProvinceofRupert’sLandwhichIattendedasalaydelegatefortheDioceseofCalgary.TheSynodtookplaceinManitouSprings,Watrous,SaskatchewanfromJune18-21,2015.ThereweremanyhighlightsofthegatheringandIwouldliketoshareafewofthosewithyou.

• Theelectionofthe16thMetropolitanfortheProvinceofRupert’sLandtookplaceaftertheopeningserviceonThursdaythe18th.After2ballotsBishopGregoryKerr-WilsonfromtheDioceseofCalgarywaselected.

• NationalIndigenousAnglicanBishopMarkMacDonaldgaveanincrediblepresentationontheMarksofMissionandhowthedigitsofourhandrepresentthe5marksofmission.

• ThereweretwoBibleStudiesusingthefollowingscripturereadingsLuke10.1-9,17-20“TheMissionoftheSeventy”1Samuel3,1-20“Samuel’sCallingandPropheticActivity”ThecallforactioninLukeandtheremindertolistentowhatGodiscallingustodoinSamuelwereextremelyhumblingandspirituallyrefreshing.

• TherewasaGospelJamboreeonFridayeveningthatwasemotionallymoving.EveryDiocesesharedtheirmusicaltalents(mostwithnopreviousrehearsal)toproclaimthegospelthroughsong.Instrumentswereborrowedandinsomecaseswordsweresungfromgoogledwords

displayedonelectronicmedia.IfelttotallyempoweredandenabledbytheoverwhelmingpresenceoftheHolySpirit.

• DinnerandDanceonSaturdayeveningatthehistoric102yearoldDancelandwasrefreshingandfun.

• SundaymorningwastheclosingworshipandtheinstallationofthenewlyelectedGregoryKerr-Wilsonasthe16thMetropolitanofRupert’sLand.Theservicestartedoutdoorsbutthetorrentialrainmixedwiththunderandlightningforcedusindoors.Theloudestclapofthundercoincidedwiththe,nowArchbishopGreg,acceptanceoftheMetropolitanCrossfromtheotherBishops.

IbringbackfromthisSynodapromisemade,fromallinattendance,tosharethisexperienceinmissionbasedworshipwithourparishanddiocesanfamiliesandanyoneelseintheworldwhowilllisten.

Weareanintercessoryprayerministryinthechurch.Someofyoumaybemorefamiliarwiththeterm“prayerchain”.Wecallitaprayerquadbecauseeachteamconsistsoffourmembers.Oftenwefinditdifficulttoprayforourselvesoralovedoneduringastressfulsituation.ThatiswhyGodhasgiventosomethe“MinistryofIntercession”.TheystandinthegapforothersandtaketheirburdentoGodinprayer.Whenwereceiveaprayerrequest,thatrequestisprayedfordailyuntilnolongerneededandalwaysinstrictconfidence.We,asaprayergroup,havebeenstrengthenedinourfaithandtrustinGodbecausewehavewitnessedmanymiraclesandalsoHisamazinggraceeveninthosetimeswhenwedidn’tgetexactlywhatweprayedfor.ThereisnoconcerntoobigortoosmalltolifttoGodinprayer.Therequestdoesn’tjusthavetobeanissue.Itcouldbeforsafetravelforaholidayyouhaveplanned,asuccessfuljobinterview.Italsoisn’trestrictedtoonlymembersofourchurch.Allprayerrequestsarekeptinstrictconfidence.TheprayerislifteduptoGod,notshared.Ifyouoranyoneyouknowareinneedofprayer,orifthisisaministryyoufeelGoddrawingyouto,pleasecontactoneofthefollowing:BevDorchak 4033287176(leader)ElsieMorris 4033283950(co-leader)Churchoffice 4033273970
