(The total amount needed – and now raised – is $158,100.00.) Electrical work should begin soon, with the roof work to happen thereafter.

NEW! Veterans Day

Our thanks to all the Veterans of the parish for their service to us and to our nation! May God bless them, and may God bless America!

NEW! Public Transit – Veterans Day

On Veterans Day, Wednesday, November 11, the Birmingham-Jefferson County Transit Authority (BJCTA) will honor Veterans with free all-day bus service. Veterans may enjoy a free ride by showing an active military identification card, VA health card, or a retired military identification card to the bus operator upon boarding. Transit will operate on a Saturday schedule that day, and the free rides will be offered the entire day.

Alabama Awakening II

The Alabama Awakening II Student Retreat will be the weekend of November 13-15 at the Springville Retreat Center. Awakening retreats have been changing lives and challenging students to engage in their faith at campuses all over the country. At an Awakening students grow closer to Christ, closer to his Church, and develop deep bonds of friendship. If you are a college student, you need to experience this retreat! If you are the parent of a college student, you need to let them know about this retreat! For more info or to register, go to http://www.alabamaawakening.org. The cost is $45 for the entire weekend. Parish scholarships are available (ask Father Jerabek). Space is limited, so sign up sooner rather than later!

NEW! Charity Luncheon

St. Barnabas Catholic School is sponsoring a luncheon for the Lovelady Center on Saturday, November 14. As part of this event, the school is requesting donations of clothing and shoes. Donations may be left at the school on Monday, November 9.

NEW! Public Rosary

Thank you to all who attended our first public rosary in October. We plan to meet again on Saturday, November 14 at 9:00am in front of the church. Everyone is invited and welcome.

NEW! Attention All 8th Graders

John Carroll Catholic High School is now accepting applications for the Class of 2020. The High School Placement Test will take place on Saturday, December 5, 2015 from 7:45am until 11:30am at the school. There will be a breakfast reception for parents beginning at 7:45am, followed by a presentation by the administration at 8:30am. To register, complete the online application via the school web site, http://www.jcchs.org (click on Admissions). Students are also encouraged to come to John Carroll for a Shadow Day to get the full high school experience! Call the Admissions Office at 205-940-2400 x233 for more details.

Inmate Correspondence

An inmate at St. Clair Correctional Facility has been in touch with the parish for some time (he had become friends with Father Wrigley), and he would like to have a pen pal. If you might be interested in corresponding with him, call Alice in the church office for more information.

Winter Coats Needed for Holy Rosary

As the weather cools down it’s time to start thinking about the children in Gate City who might not have sufficiently warm outerwear this year. It’s a great opportunity to donate out-grown items from children and grandchildren (ask your neighbors and coworkers also!). If you have an item to give, please tell Father Jerabek or bring it to Alice or David in the church office. Thank you to all who have already made a donation!

NEW! Organ Move Completed

The organ was moved to the choir loft this past Wednesday, November 4. It was also “re-voiced” (i.e., all of its different sounds were adjusted to resonate properly in the particular acoustic dynamics of our building); in addition, new and better speakers were installed.

With the organ having been moved, the pews in the nave were reconfigured. The two open areas are meant to accommodate wheel chairs or those who may need space for a walker or other assistance device. Some of the newly-arranged pews may be missing hardware (book rack, hat hooks, or kneeler) – this will be fixed as soon as possible. Chairs will soon be purchased for the choir loft also. HOLY CHILD CHAPEL – OPENING SOON

The first phase of our school chapel has largely been completed (all that is missing is the stained glass – arriving soon – and the donor recognition plaque). A dedication ceremony will be announced soon. Our school principal, Mr. John Parker, has worked out a plan so that all of the students will make a visit to the chapel once a day; in addition, First Friday devotions will be held there for the students & teachers.

CATHOLIC VOCABULARY

This Week’s Term: NAVE

The nave is the main seating area of a church, as distinct from the sanctuary (see last week’s column) and the narthex (see next week’s). In most churches, there are pews in the nave. Sometimes the nave is flanked by side aisles and even side chapels. The word ‘nave’ comes from the Latin word for ‘ship’ (navis), possibly because of its resemblance in shape to a ship – or because of the resemblance in some more ancient churches of its ceiling to the inner structure of a ship (if it were turned upside down).
