Through our Catholic Faith, GROWING IN MIND, HEART, AND SPIRIT TO BECOME LEADERS IN THE WORLD

As we celebrate Valentine’s Day today we are surrounded by many visuals that cause us to think about love and kindness shared with others. We are truly blessed to have a parish school where our children may have Christ's presence in their lives, calling upon Him as we face daily challenges. We can see no greater example of love than what Christ shared for everyone of us on His cross. We too are called to share that spirit of love with one another. How could we define the spirit of St. Barnabas School? That spirit we want to catch? First of all it is Christ's Spirit and guidance in our lives daily. His spirit is present in our school lives and we can celebrate that daily. We continue to focus on growing in mind, heart, and spirit, as we become leaders in the world. But we could not be effective in our efforts if Christ's spirit was not guiding us and being our model. How is our spirit evident? At St. Barnabas School we are blessed with the spirit of generosity. We are successful in meeting the needs of our students because of the generosity of our teachers and staff. I have the pleasure of working each day with a committed team of professionals who give generously of their time, talent and treasure. For many teachers, the work day begins when they arrive around 6:00 A.M. and continues long after the students leave at 2:45. We are a collaborative team, always working on ways to strengthen our skills to be as effective as possible in teaching children. That spirit of generosity extends beyond our paid staff to include the many vol-unteers who give of their time to make our school a better place. Our PTO officers work in a thousand ways to provide more resources for our teachers and our students. We feel the generous spirit of the parents who come to Wednesday Mass weekly to pray for the intentions of our students, families, and staff. Your prayers strengthen our work daily. The School Commission members devote their talents continually to guide us in matters of policy and marketing. Parents who volunteer at school to be Pioneers, Tour de France guides, musical production assistants, librarians, and serve in a multitude of other roles, are invaluable. Your spirit of generosity is very visible.

A generous spirit is being learned by our students and nurtured by their teachers and parents through service learning activities. We are very proud of the efforts of our students to be good stewards of God's gifts and to be generous with their talents and treasure. Many times we were able to report about the overwhelming responses to service projects that reach out to our parish, our community, and our world. Whether it is volunteering to serve meals at the food pantries locally, writing letters of gratitude to Veterans across our nation, walking three miles to support our neighbors who are less fortunate, or assisting needy families for Christmas here in our own parish, our children are learning to be thankful, to be generous, and to be world-wise. They are catching the spirit as well. The generous spirit of St. Barnabas Parish is woven through its commitment to stewardship by all parish families. The promise to support all of the parish ministries, the school included, through a commitment to stewardship speaks volumes. What else exemplifies the spirit of St. Barnabas School? Our students and staff would overwhelmingly say it is school spirit. Whether it is at a closely contested kickball game with a rival school, collaborating with new faces at a robotics competition, or at the annual Quest for Excellence, the spirit of working together for a common goal and encouraging fellow classmates is evident. That's what we mean by school spirit. We call upon the Holy Spirit as we work toward meeting our school goals for this year. First and foremost, our school goal that all students, parents, and teachers work together to create a school culture that promotes respect for all requires us all to use the gifts of the Holy Spirit. We are very committed to that and ask for your support in teaching our children. There is no shortage of spirit to be caught. Our spirit is an extension of the spirit of this parish that has been present since its founding. It is Christ's spirit, a generous spirit, school spirit, a welcoming spirit. In St. Paul's letter to the Corinthians, he says, “There are different kinds of gifts, but the same spirit gives them. There are different ways of serving, but the same Lord is served. There are different abilities to perform service, but the same God gives ability to all for their particular service. The Spirit's presence is shown in some way in each person for the good of all." God bless, Mr. Schnarr
