Assuming that the first hearing was at his present trial, Paul was successful in preaching the Gospel before the judges and all those present for the occasion. And I was rescued from the lion’s mouth. A biblical image (Psalm 22:21; Daniel 6:22). 18 The Lord will rescue me from every evil threat Paul is not referring to release from his present imprisonment, he will be rescued for the heavenly kingdom. and will bring me safe to his heavenly kingdom. To him be glory forever and ever. Amen.

Gospel - Luke 18:9-14 As we proceed from our gospel reading last week which presented Jesus’ first parable on prayer, we now hear the second parable on prayer. Recall that the question has often been put to Jesus “When and how will the end come?” Jesus’ answer is always that we are to persevere in prayer and humility. These two parables (the one we heard last week and this one) appear only in Luke and in this one we are reminded that our virtuous works what we are proud of will not earn us entrance into God’s kingdom. 9 He [Jesus] then addressed this parable to those who were convinced of their own righteousness and despised everyone else. 10 “Two people went up to the temple area to pray; The hours of prayer were 9 A.M. and 3 P.M. one was a Pharisee and the other was a tax collector. The Pharisees were completely “just” before the Law, that is why they had such confidence in themselves. Tax collectors were always considered to be sinners. 11 The Pharisee took up his position and spoke this prayer to himself, ‘O God, I thank you that I am not like the rest of humanity – greedy, dishonest, adulterous – or even like this tax collector. 12 I fast twice a week, and I pay tithes on my whole income.’ The Pharisee carefully spells out why he is just, just in case God hadn’t noticed. 13 But the tax collector stood off at a distance and would not even raise his eyes to heaven but beat his breast A sign of repentance and mourning and prayed, ‘O God, be merciful to me a sinner.’ 14 I tell you, the latter went home justified, not the former; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and the one who humbles himself will be exalted.” The tax collector is forgiven of his sins because of his humble repentance. He has recognized his need of God’s mercy and has shown sorrow for his sins. The Pharisee, however, does not need God’s justification because he has justified himself (once saved, always saved?).

2nd Reading - 2 Timothy 4:6-8, 16-18 Today we wind up our study of 2nd Timothy as we hear Paul’s closing remarks. Recall that this letter is written as instruction and encouragement to Timothy, whom Paul installed as Bishop of Ephesus. Timothy has been having difficulties with false teachers and Paul provides pastoral guidance while he himself is held prisoner in Rome. This letter is believed to have been written in A.D. 67 with Paul being martyred in A.D. 67 or 68. The place of his martyrdom in local Roman tradition is the site of the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls. Since he was a Roman citizen, the mode of execution according to the same tradition was decapitation 6 For I am already being poured out like a libation, A libation is a sacrificial rite in which a liquid (usually wine or oil) was poured out on the altar. and the time of my departure is at hand. Paul’s death is near at hand. He is handing on his legacy to Timothy and other future leaders. 7 I have competed well; I have finished the race; Paul’s letters are full of athletic imagery: races, fights, etc. These images are used to exhort the reader to keep his attention focused on the prize which goes to the winner; the victor’s crown which is awarded by the chief judge. I have kept the faith. Paul has preserved and guarded the deposit of faith. 8 From now on the crown of righteousness awaits me, which the Lord, the just judge, will award to me on that day, The parousia, the day of judgment and not only to me, but to all who have longed for his appearance. All who out of love for Christ have lived a Christian life as a preparation for their appearance at the judgment. 16 At my first defense no one appeared on my behalf, but everyone deserted me. It is possible that Paul is referring to his Roman house arrest, but more likely he alludes to a first hearing in his present trial. “Story has it that the apostle, after defending himself, was again sent upon the ministry of preaching and coming a second time to the same city met death by martyrdom under Nero. While he was being held in prison, he composed the second epistle to Timothy, at the same time indicating that his first defense had taken place and that martyrdom was at hand.” [Eusebius Pamphilus of Caesarea (between A.D. 300-325), History of the Church 2,22] May it not be held against them! 17 But the Lord stood by me and gave me strength, so that through me the proclamation might be completed and all the Gentiles might hear it.

I entrust to You today this knot....and all the negative consequences that it provokes in my life. I give you this knot that torments me and makes me unhappy and so impedes me from uniting myself to You and Your Son Jesus, my Savior. I run to You, Mary, Undoer of Knots because I trust you and I know that you never despise a sinning child who comes to ask you for help. I believe that you can undo this knot because Jesus grants you everything. I believe that you want to undo this knot because you are my Mother. I believe that You will do this because you love me with eternal love. Thank you, Dear Mother. Mary, Undoer of Knots, pray for me. The one who seeks grace, finds it in Mary's hands. PRAYER TO MARY, UNDOER OF KNOTS (Closing Prayer) Virgin Mary, Mother of fair love, Mother who never refuses to come to the aid of a child in need, Mother whose hands never cease to serve your beloved children because they are moved by the divine love and immense mercy that exists in your heart, cast your compassionate eyes upon me and see the snarl of knots that exist in my life. You know very well how desperate I am, my pain and how I am bound by these knots. Mary, Mother to whom God entrusted the undoing of the knots in the lives of His children, I entrust into your hands the ribbon of my life. No one, not even the evil one himself, can take it away from your precious care. In your hands there is no knot that cannot be undone. Powerful Mother, by your grace and intercessory power with Your Son and My Liberator, Jesus, take into your hands today this knot...I beg you to undo it for the glory of God, once for all, You are my hope. O my Lady, you are the only consolation God gives me, the fortification of my feeble strength, the enrichment of my destitution and with Christ the freedom from my chains. Hear my plea. Keep me, guide me, protect me, o safe refuge! Mary, Undoer of Knots, pray for me Novena to Mary, Undoer of Knots - Day 2 1. Make the sign of the cross 2. Say the Act of Contrition. Many times I lose the graces you grant me because of my sins of egoism, pride, rancor and my lack of generosity and humility. I turn to You today, Mary, Undoer of knots, for You to ask your Son Jesus to grant me a pure, divested, humble and trusting heart. I will live today practicing these virtues and offering you this as a sign of my love for You. I entrust into Your hands this knot (...describe) which keeps me from reflecting the glory of God. Mary, Undoer of Knots, pray for me. Mary offered all the moments of her day to God.

Meditation for Day 4 Our Lady Undoer of Knots Dearest Holy Mother, you are generous with all who seek you, have mercy on me. I entrust into your hands this knot which robs the peace of my heart, paralyzes my soul and keeps me from going to my Lord and serving Him with my life. Undo this knot in my love...., O mother, and ask Jesus to heal my paralytic faith which gets down hearted with the stones on the road. Along with you, dearest Mother, may I see these stones as friends. Not murmuring against them anymore but giving endless thanks for them, may I smile trustingly in your power. Mary, Undoer of Knots, pray for me. Mary is the Sun and no one is deprived of her warmth. No one ever saw you angry; to the contrary, your words were so charged with sweetness that the Holy Spirit was manifested on your lips. Take away from me the bitterness, anger and hatred which this knot has caused me. Give me, o dearest Mother, some of the sweetness and wisdom that is all silently reflected in your heart. And just as you were present at Pentecost, ask Jesus to send me a new presence of the Holy Spirit at this moment in my life. Holy Spirit, come upon me! Mary, Undoer of Knots, pray for me. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Although the hours of daylight are rapidly dwindling, many people would say that these October days bring the year’s most splendid weather. Americans are riders and joggers, not strollers, and so the pleasures of the season are often lost on us. This is not the case with many Jewish people, who observe an ancient rule in walking to synagogue on the Sabbath. On city streets and suburban sidewalks in many cities, we may notice around sunset the nicely dressed families walking and chatting on Friday afternoon. After a short prayer at dusk, the families stroll home again for a relaxing and festive meal. They return to synagogue in the morning, and then spend an afternoon in family leisure until three stars appear in the night sky and Sabbath ends. Catholics, on the other hand, pile into the car and drive even a short distance to Mass; some even divide the family to participate at different hours. For Jews, the leisurely walk marks a dividing line between hectic life commitments and a day of abundant joy and enrichment. Before we became an automobile culture, Catholics embraced a similar pace, and in most places walked to church. These lovely days of fall invite us to tap into an old and life-giving tradition. If you live within a mile of your church, walk next week. If you must drive, park at a good distance and walk the rest of the way. Talk about your life, greet strangers, notice the crunch of leaves under your shoes. You may be surprised at how different Sunday Mass feels when it is framed by leisure! —James Field, Copyright © J. “There was a judge in a certain town who neither feared God

nor respected any human being.” Sadly that describes many people in power in the time of Jesus and in our own time. But Jesus describes a woman whose persistence moves the self-centered judge to render a just judgment. Notice that Jesus does not say that the judge ruled in favor of the woman. Just that his decision was JUST. That is what the woman was so persistent to obtain. In contrast to that judge, God wants what is right and just for us. But that may not be what we want. We should pray for God to reveal what HE wants FOR US. Often our prayer is what WE want FROM GOD. When we are persistent in prayer to learn God’s will for us we grow in our faith. Such faith is not easy. Even St. Theresa of Calcutta had periods of doubt, but she prayed to discern God’s will for her and did it regardless of her doubt. We may not achieve the accomplishments and gain the notoriety of St. Theresa, but we can be persistent in prayer to know God’s will for us. God does not ask any more of us than that. But he does ask that.
