SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES

Sunday: Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Monday: Presidents’ Day

Thursday: St. Peter Damian

Friday: Chair of St. Peter the Apostle;

Washington’s Birthday

Saturday: St. Polycarp

BLESSED When we think of the word “Beatitude” we think of to-day’s discourse from Luke’s Gospel, or the more familiar one from Matthew (which begins “Blessed are the poor in spirit . . . ”). Actually, beatitudes occur throughout the prophets and Gospels. Today in Jeremiah (with an echo in the psalm) we hear, “Blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord” (Jeremiah 17:7). Following his resurrection in John’s Gospel, Christ proclaims, “Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed” (John 20:29). The evan-gelists placed these sayings throughout the Gospels as short reminders about the characteristics that one will find in a follower of Christ, characteristics that will help spread the Good News in this life and lead to eternal blessings in the next. In Latin, the saints are called the Beati, the “Blessed,” for they are the ones who lived the “blessed” life as described by Jesus throughout the Gospels. How blest are we, when we also strive to make our own days a living beatitude! Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

February 17, 2019 Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Times “Blessed are you when people hate you,…exclude and insult you, and denounce your name…on account of the Son of Man.” (LUKE 6:22) All of us have been in situations when someone has made a negative comment or joke about God or our Catholic faith. How did you respond? Did you stay si-lent or pretend to go along with the crowd because you didn’t want to cause waves and then, later, you felt bad? Know that God is with you all the time, the Holy Spirit will put the right words in your mouth. Pray for the strength and courage to proclaim our faith to others, especially during uncomfortable situations.

How do we live a moral life?

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

In recent years, there has been remarkable progress in drawing persons with disabilities into full celebra-tion. Now it is generally accepted that worship places need accommodations such as ramps or elevators, large-print materials for those who are sight-impaired, and perhaps even an assisted hearing system or signing in American Sign Language. American Sign Language is not merely English translated into movement, but a dis-tinct language with its own grammar, syntax (word or-der), and vocabulary. For this reason, the American Catholic bishops have approved American Sign Lan-guage (ASL) as an official language of the liturgy. Celebrating liturgy in our own language (the ver-nacular) means that liturgy must be accessible to all lan-guages and cultures. The fact that Mass is celebrated this weekend in some places in total silence, but with the full participation of deaf people praising God in the movements of their hands, and sometimes even with a priest who is deaf, is nothing less than the Church being faithful to the image of Jesus, who made the deaf hear and the mute speak. Remember too that deafness is an invisible disability, and that there may well be people in your parish who are quietly yearning for Mass to be signed for them in ASL.

The Relics of St. Anthony of Padua In the early church, the age of martyrs and persecution, relics took on an even more important role in the life of the church. St. Polycarp, a disciple of the apostle John, was martyred in 155/156. A contemporary ac-count of Polycarp’s martyrdom stated:

“We took up his bones, which are more valuable than precious stones and finer than refined gold, and laid them in a suitable place, where the Lord will permit us to gather ourselves together, as we are able, in glad-ness and joy and to celebrate the birthday of his mar-tyrdom.”

On Monday, February 25, 2019, Father Bortolino Maistrello, will bring two first-class relics to St. Boni-face. This visit will be part of the first North American holy relics tour of 2019 to prepare us for the Season of Lent which begins on March 6, Ash Wednesday. We would like you to extend this invitation to all of your friends of Christian faith to come and ask for Saint Anthony’s intercession for more than the loss of mate-rial things, but also for loss of faith, family harmony, health, hope, peace of mind and trust in others.
