Thursday, September 12 Memorial of the Most Holy Name of Mary The origin of today’s memorial goes back to the celebration of the defeat of Muslim Turkish invaders outside Vienna in 1683. While we can sympathize with people who were grateful for the turning back of a force that threatened all of Europe, it’s difficult for Christians today to thank the Blessed Virgin Mary—whose own Son suffered persecution and execution at the hands of religious authorities and a foreign occupier—for a military victory when extremists use religion as justification for violence. Perhaps we better honor Mary’s Most Holy Name if we pray and work for peace instead. Friday, September 13 Memorial of St. John Chrysostom Saint John Chrysostom is most familiar among Roman Catholics as a “golden-mouthed” preacher, but among Eastern Rite Catholics and Orthodox Christians, John Chrysostom’s name is also associated with the Divine Liturgy—still in use-—that bears his name. As Bishop of Constantinople, John oversaw the enhancement and unification of liturgical practices in use among early Christians, which were rooted in Hebrew scripture and Jewish worship practices. As much as Chrysostom appreciated the rich inheritance Christianity received from Judaism, he was known to harshly criticize Christians who continued to celebrate Jewish holidays and attend Jewish services. Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the year for Jews, is a good day to remember the common threads of Christianity and Judaism and atone for the intolerance we have shown one another through our shared history. Saturday, September 14 Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross While Christians today see in the cross a sign of victory, before Constantine’s Edict of Milan calling for religious toleration in the Roman Empire in 313, the cross was a dreaded symbol representing Rome’s cruel persecution of Christians and others who challenged the emperor’s authority. While such persecution may seem remote to us, it is alive and well in a number of regimes hostile to Christianity around the world. Pray today for all Christians who are not able to exalt the cross without fear of persecution. Bring their pain, and the pain of all those who have died for the sake of their faith, to the foot of the cross in prayer.
Sunday, September 8 In the Okinawan language two characters came to make
up the word karate: kara (“empty”) and te (“hand”). The name of this martial art, then, is literally “the way of the empty hand”—and that isn’t only the open hand you might hit someone with! Tadashi Nakamura, the founder of the Seido form of karate, said: “When we
love freely, we can give and share everything. We need HOLD on to nothing. Our hands can be empty.” Jesus
was no martial artist, but nonetheless his way of life was one of an “open hand”: to empty himself in order to give himself. Those who would call themselves his
followers should be ready to do the same. Monday, September 9 Memorial of St. Peter Claver, priest Peter Claver’s sole ministry as a priest was to slaves brought to Cartagena (now in Colombia) in the 17th century. He believed that his first duty was to the basic human needs of people who were being treated like animals. “We must speak to them with our hands before we try to speak to them with our lips,” he said. Like his fellow Jesuit, Pope Francis, Peter Claver plunged into the midst of the poor, even into the stinking holds of slave ships and the cages where people were herded after landing. Peter brought supplies and comfort and became a moral force in the city. He would gladly have reversed those first two words of Cain and said: “I am my brother’s keeper.” Tuesday, September 10 The accomplished but little-known 20th-century artist and industrial designer Alfonso Iannelli was one of the first to bring modern ideas to church design. In a stained-glass window he designed of Jesus Christ the King, he depicted a monarch, not on a throne but holding a crown in front of him, his head bowed toward it. Even Jesus, the image seems to say, showed humility before divine power even as that same power was flowing through him. We should all be humbled by the power we possess through Christ. Use it wisely. Wednesday, September 11 When something does not go your way, take a moment to “think of what is above, not what is on earth,” as Saint Paul advises. That is not to say you should conjure up an image of choirs of angels but rather remember what it means to be one with Christ, the Prince of Peace. Daily prayer practice-—spiritual exercise—trains you to get to that place of peace before you get swept away by daily stresses.
