REFLECTIONS / STEWARDSHIP PAGE 3 JULY 3, 2016

Brothers and Sisters,

It is that time of the year when many of us go on summer vacations and/or look forward to holidays, like tomorrow, the 4th of July. If you are anything like me, you find yourself leaving everything to the last minute. This usually results in (for me) a frantic frenzy, trying to figure out what to pack, do I know where my tickets are and, oh yes, do I need a passport and if so where is it or how do I get one? For others, the excitement of travel begins with the preparation and getting everything ready to go. For you folks, I commend to you the words of the writer Robert Louis Stevenson of “Treasure Island” fame, “to travel hopefully is a better thing than to arrive.” For us these days of preparation for travel are a necessity, not an option.

All of these things having been said, it is surprising for us, when we read the Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke to hear that Jesus not only sent out disciples with just the clothes on their back, but that he forbade them to make adequate preparation. Luke’s Gospel for today is unique to him. Here Jesus appoints 72 others, disciples not numbered among the 12, in pairs to go to places he himself will visit. Jesus lists a whole series of things these disciples are not to do. Simply put, they are to do nothing to prepare for their journey. They are not to take anything with them that would aid in their travel: “Carry no money bag, no sack, no sandals.” In today’s world Jesus would be say-ing, “Don’t take any money or credit cards with you; don’t take any luggage because you won’t need to pack anything and don’t bother taking another pair of shoes.” This journey is not a holiday. Jesus has just begun his journey to Jerusalem, where he will suffer and die and rise again. However, before he reaches there, the Kingdom of God must be proclaimed as far and as insistently as possible.

Jesus’ instructions are timeless. They are as true for us today as they were for the disciples. Any hesitations, faults and failings we may have can be barriers to the announcement that the Kingdom of God is at hand. In the same way we can always find excuses to think we can’t be the bearers of the Good News. Yet our lives, if they are Gospel-based are automatically proclamations of the kingdom. We don’t need passports, tickets, luggage or money to be disciples; we do, however, need the desire to go on that journey to the places where we can take the Good News of Jesus himself. In a word, we are called to “evangelize”. It is the vocation of the Church (us) to continue spreading the Good News of Jesus and follow in the footsteps of the 12 and the 72 who were commanded by the Lord to carry the Gospel to all.

At the beginning of our time together today I mentioned that tomorrow is the 4th of July. Tomorrow will be the 240th year of our independ-ence. As we celebrate this holiday, let us take time to remember all those who down through time have served and continue to serve so that we may enjoy our freedoms. Someone once said, “Freedom is never free.”

RESPECTLIFEMINISTRYInregardstothephysician-assistedsui-cidelawnowlegalinCalifornia...Archbishop Jose Gomez recently challenged the foundations of this immoral law: "Giving doctors a license to kill is NOT leadership on health care, he said..."This is the beginning of tyranny."..."With this new law, we are abandoning our most vulnerable and frail neighbors, dis-missing them as 'not worthy' of our care..."

"The archbishop reminded doctors, nurses, health administra-tors, hospitals and health care facilities that the law protects their consciences and does NOT compel cooperation. The proper response to an unjust law is conscientious objec-tion. And this is an unjust law."..."Helping patients to kill them-selves denies patients their dignity and diminishes the humanity of those entrusted to care for them. A C July 3, 2016—Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

St. Catherine of Alexandria Church, Riverside entrusted to the MSC Philippines. After a bit of research, now it can be said: the guy who gave the framed image of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart at the side chapel, Mary’s side, was Michael Lozano. 8:00 am daily church goers knew him. It was unfortunate that when we learned about him and the image of Our Lady and I was about to interview him about it, he suddenly died. The reasons behind

this mysterious precedence of Our Lady to the coming of the Filipino MSC may remain hidden for a long time… unless Michael’s mother or his friends have some knowledge to share. Strategic Pastoral Planning: After two years at St. Catherine’s, the parish under the care of its MSC Pastor Fr. Gene Sabio, MSC with the MSC community and the lay leaderships, embarked on the project of a Strategic Pastoral Planning. This was so because it is policy of the MSC Philip-pines missionary and pastoral ministry not to introduce immediate changes upon assumption of office, but to wait for at least a year or two to get to know the people, feel the situation, and share visions and convictions with the people. The Spirit behind the Strategic Pastoral Planning: I was tasked to present a conceptual framework of the exercise, prior to the actual strategic pastoral planning workshops. I presented three areas which I thought would help enrich the project. These were: (1) the spirituality and pastoral needs of the parish; (2) the Vision-Mission Statement of the Diocese of San Bernardino; (3) the MSC spirituality and the Vision-Mission and Thrust of the MSC Philippine Province. The spirituality of the parish was a difficult discussion. Very few knew of St. Catherine of Alexandria; the scarcity of available literature about her did not animate or inspire many. And the history of the parish itself, though rich, did not have many written accounts or living eye-witnesses. The Vision-Mission Statement of the diocese and other pertinent documents were available. They needed to be studied. But at that time, many in the parish felt abandoned by the bishop: their beloved pastor was taken away; they were left to a lay administrator only to be handed over to a religious congregation of Asians and Filipinos at that. The presentation of the MSC Spirituality and the MSC Philippine Province Vision-Mission-Thrust was immediately challenged: why would foreigners impose their spirituality and mission on OUR parish? The Planning Proper: The preparatory part was to get to know the actual parish situation, or the State of the Parish. This was done through research, looking back at the parish history, the archives and contemporary documents and records, and actual input from the parishioners them-selves. A group was tasked to analyze and read the data, including focus group discussions. A bigger representative body was set up to do the actual exercise of strategic pastoral planning and initial feed-backing. The final draft was submitted to the parishioners. The resulting Vision-Mission Statement is what we now have on the front page of our parish bulletin. Meanwhile, the different ministries did come up with their respec-tive programs of action to approximate the implementation of the Vision-Mission Statement. Our family says: thank you for the help and prayers for my brother, Marietto. My brother’s wake started in the evening of June 20, after his body was cleaned and embalmed. He was lying in state at the funeral home in Cebu until the 25th June. Everyday we prayed the novena for the dead followed by the Eucharist. On the 25th June his body was flown to Manila and brought to his adopted hometown in Jose Panganiban, Cama-rines Norte. Now he is here lying in state, and will be buried on Tuesday, 28th June. The town, through the mayor and municipal officials, will offer him a necrological program at the municipal hall on Tuesday morning. After lunch, the Eucharist will be celebrated in the church, followed by his burial. –Fr. Ben

bÇx fÑ|Ü|à? bÇx VÉÅÅâÇ|àç More Summer Thoughts

Have you thought of having your kids keep a vacation journal? It might be a hard sell for regular days at home in the heat, but they can be very useful for trips or special days out. At the end of a day

of sightseeing along the Grand Canyon or body surfing at the beach, a vacation journal gives them a chance to reflect on their activity while they wind down for the evening in the hotel room or before they go to bed at home.

A nice twist on the idea is to make it a “Thank You, Lord” journal, where the day’s activities are viewed through the perspective of why we are thankful God has given us this day. Be sure to clarify with them that the journal is part of the family’s vacation experience, and have them share it with you. A similar idea is useful as a discussion starter in the evening to think positively about the day. It could even become the beginning of the family prayer of thanksgiving for times that God has given us.

Regardless of how, be sure to keep your children’s mind positively focused beyond video games, tablets, and cell phones. If you keep them reflective of how God has impacted their days, they will become more reflective persons. And reflection of God is one thing we all want to see in the eyes of our children. Enjoy the summer and keep them thinking.

Thank you and God Bless, Enrique Landin Telephone: (951) 684-1091 Principal Email: [email protected] Website: www.stcofa1.org

—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
