Thirty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time Today’s Readings First Reading: The widow of Zarephath had only a handful of flour and a little oil, but made a little cake for Elijah (1 Kings 17). Psalm: Praise the Lord, my soul! (Psalm 146). Second Reading: Christ will appear a second time to bring salvation to those who eagerly await him (Hebrews 9). Gospel: This poor widow put in more than all the other contributors (Mark 12). Readings for the Week Monday: Ti 1:1-9; Ps 24:1b-4ab, 5-6; Lk 17:1-6 Tuesday: Ti 2:1-8, 11-14; Ps 37:3-4, 18, 23, 27, 29; Lk 17:7-10 Wednesday: Ti 3:1-7; Ps 23:1b-6; Lk 17:11-19 Thursday: Phlm 7-20; Ps 146:7-10; Lk 17:20-25 Friday: 2 Jn 4-9; Ps 119:1-2, 10-11, 17-18; Lk 17:26-37 Saturday: 3 Jn 5-8; Ps 112:1-6; Lk 18:1-8 Sunday: Dn 12:1-3; Ps 16:5, 8-11; Heb 10:11-14, 18; Mk 13:24-32 Saints and Special Observances Sunday: Thirty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time Monday: St. Josaphat Tuesday: St. Frances Xavier Cabrini Thursday: St. Albert the Great Friday: St. Margaret of Scotland; St. Gertrude Saturday: St. Elizabeth of Hungary Scripture Reflection The core vocation in the Gospel of Mark is the vocation, or call, to discipleship. Today’s Gospel passage provides us with one last example of what the vocation to discipleship means, and one example of what it doesn’t mean. A destitute widow shows us that discipleship means following Jesus’ way of service, even if it requires giving one’s livelihood (or life). The scribes show us by their bad example that discipleship should entail a vocation to extend God’s care to those who are most in need. In our reading from the book of Kings another widow and her son are close to death. They too give what little they have, but they are rewarded by Elijah with food enough for a year. And the reading from the Letter to the Hebrews reminds us that Jesus sacrificed his life “to bring salvation to those who eagerly await him” (Hebrews 9:28). Archdiocesan Family Prayer

Loving and faithful God, through the years the people of our archdiocese have appreciated the prayers and love of Our Lady of Prompt Succor in times of war, disaster, epidemic and illness. We come to you, Father, with Mary our Mother, and ask you to help us in the battle of today against violence, murder and racism. We implore you to give us your wisdom that we may build a community founded on the values of Jesus, which gives respect to the life and dignity of all people. Bless parents that they may form their children in faith. Bless and protect our youth that they may be peacemakers of our time. Give consolation to those who have lost loved ones through violence. Hear our prayer and give us the perseverance to be a voice for life and hu-man dignity in our community. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Our Lady of Prompt Succor, hasten to help us. Mother Henriette Delille, pray for us that we may be a holy family. Amen. St. Catherine of Siena Parish Prayer

God, Our Father, we thank you for our parish community of St. Catherine of Siena. Thank you for the many blessings that you have given us, but especially for calling us to serve as disciples of your son, Jesus Christ. As we gather today, we ask that you send your Holy Spirit to guide us in everything that we do. Transform our hearts and lead us closer to you. Help us always to seek to be a parish that is Centered on Christ and Ablaze with Love. We ask all of these things in the name of Jesus, and through the intercession of our Blessed Mother. St. Catherine of Siena, pray for us! Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do thou, O Prince of the Heav-enly Host, by the power of God, cast into hell Satan and all evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

Youth in grades 8-12 are invited to attend wearing their strangest attire—clothing from your closet, or from a resale store; with a compe-tition to see which youth group turns out in greatest numbers. The cost is $10. Be unique, be creative, and come to party! KC Jambalaya Dinner Pickup: November 11 Our Knights of Columbus Council is hosting its annual Fall Jambalaya sale on Sunday, November 11, from 10 am-12:30 pm. Walk-ups will be available as long as supplies last. Knights of Columbus Council #12686 serves our parish and community in many ways and is seeking to add even more pro-grams in the coming year. Be on the lookout for the Knights in action! Men who are interested in more information about the Knights are welcome to contact David Lynch, 250-1185 or [email protected]. Vocation Cross Sign-ups this Weekend

St. Catherine vocations committee members will be in the narthex to take sign-up information for the vocation cross ministry. On the second Sunday of each month at all Masses, a vocation cross is given to a fami-ly or individual who makes a commitment to pray for vocations for a month. Those making this commitment agree to attend the Mass for which they signed up to accept the cross after the homily (a booklet with suggested prayers is provided), and to return the vocation cross and booklet to the church office on the Wednesday before the second Sunday of the following month. A reminder email is sent the week before one’s selected date. If you have questions or want to sign up and miss this weekend’s op-portunity to do so, contact Rich and Leslie Baudry at 442-7013 or email [email protected] or [email protected].

Christmas Raffle Ticket Sale: November 10-11 Rosary Altar Society Raffle tickets will be available for purchase be-fore and after the November 10 and 11 Masses. See page five of this bulletin for a list of the prizes. All proceeds will go toward purchasing new sets of green and white vestments for our priests and deacons. Tickets are $2. You will have the opportunity to sign up during the November 10-11 weekend, at the table in the narthex of the church. Sr. Julie will talk about the history of the order and their work in the New Orleans area. New members welcome; dues are $15 for the year. CCHD Second Collection: November 17-18 The second collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human Develop-ment—the anti-poverty collection of the U.S. bishops—is November 17-18. Last year our archdiocese received back over $300,000 in commu-nity development grants. In addition, nearly $5,000 was allocated in local grants, since 25% of the collection is directed toward local anti-poverty projects. Beneficiaries from 2018 included St. Alphonsus Par-ish, St. Martha Parish, St. Mary Academy, Fourth World Movement at St. Augustine Parish, Bread or Stones (Louisiana Interfaith Church Alli-ance), Catholic Climate Covenant, Congregation of St. Joseph, and the Jesuit Social Research Institute. SCS Mugs and Plaques for Sale: November 17-18 St. Catherine of Siena mugs and colorful plaques with a rendering of the front façade of the church will be available for purchase after the Masses on Saturday, November 17, and Sunday, November 18. The mugs sell for $10 and are white with “St. Catherine of Siena Church” and the “Centered on Christ, Ablaze with Love” logo in blue and gold. Plaques sell for $33; each is unique. The mugs and plaques make per-fect Christmas gifts for family members who are hard to buy for. All proceeds go to the St. Joseph Altar. Thank you for your support. Ozanam Inn Service Opportunity: November 18 The Knights of Columbus invite all interested parishioners to join them in serving an afternoon meal at Ozanam Inn, 843 Camp Street, New Orleans, on Sunday, November 18. For more information, please call Ken Krey at 289-2465. Thanksgiving Morning Mass: November 22 Mass will be offered on Thanksgiving morning, Thursday, November 22, at 10 am (please note the change from the customary 9 am time). Kindly bring nonperishable food items to help restock the St. Vincent de Paul food bank. These items will be brought forward at the offerto-ry. All are invited to bring the bread and wine to be served later in one’s home for a special blessing at the end of Mass. This will be the only Mass on Thanksgiving Day. In Sympathy Please pray for the repose of the souls of Gloria Carey, Elaine Cheralla, Mary Jane Goodman, and Charles Murphy Leroux. Eternal rest grant unto Gloria, unto Elaine, unto Mary Jane, and unto Charles, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace.

November Flower Memorials

Thank you to all for the November Flower Memorial donations!

Letter from Seminarian from St. Catherine Dear Parishioners of St. Catherine, I’m writing this note to tell you a little about myself and to thank you for being parishioners of St. Catherine. I was never officially a St. Catherine pa-rishioner until recently, but I did live about three blocks from Pontiff Playground for three years of my life when I was younger. I went to St. Francis Xavier for grammar school through 8th grade and then at-tended Archbishop Rummel High School (Raider Pride!)—I thought Fr. Tim might appreciate that. After high school, I attended to LSU.

I was raised Catholic, but I fell away from my faith after high school for about nine years, and then had a “reversion” to the faith about five years ago. I’m 32 years old, in case you were trying to do the math. After seven months of practicing my faith again, I heard the call to the priesthood while praying in a local adoration chapel in front of the

Blessed Sacrament. Though I have never felt worthy of such a calling, God in His infinite mercy continues to draw me toward this awesome vocation of shepherding souls to Christ. I am humbled almost daily by the task in front of me, but it is through the prayers and encourage-ment of the faithful (You!) and the grace of God that I am continuing on the path toward ordination. As a new parishioner of St. Catherine’s, I sincerely look forward to meeting as many of you as I can over these next three years and promise to keep you in my prayers and only ask that you do the same for me. May the intercession of St. Catherine of Siena and the Blessed Mother continue to draw you into an ever deeper relationship with Christ so that you can set the world on fire with the love of God! Sincerely in Christ, Michael Lamy

Hurricane Michael Relief Hurricane Michael has left families in the panhandle of Florida homeless and without the basics of food and water. The popular vacation commu-nity of Panama City is still without electricity or water. While many of the reports are focused on the beaches and beach communities, there is great need inland where there are residents and a higher level of pov-erty. We in the Archdiocese of New Orleans know the impact of gener-osity in storm recovery. The following are some ways we can help the people of the Florida Panhandle: Catholic Charities of Northwest Florida has set up a website listing the needs of the area and also volunteer opportunities. They estimate they will need 75 volunteers, 7 days a week for several months to work in recovery. For those wanting to help, go to https://ccnwfl.org/ to learn what collections are being accepted and how to sign up to volunteer. For anyone with family or who know of families or individuals that have been displaced by Hurricane Michael and are now in New Orleans, Cath-olic Charities case managers are available to help. Please call 227-3440. Those wanting to send a monetary donation to assist in the recovery may send a check for Hurricane Michael Relief to the Archdiocese of New Orleans, 7887 Walmsley Avenue, New Orleans, LA 70125.
