Most of us can recall run-ins with coworkers, even with the boss. Did it happen while socializing with friends? Go easy on politics, religion . . . even sports. At home? Even the most peaceful household experiences a little “give and take” now and then. So where was it that “there arose no little dissension and debate”? That tumultuous conflict occurred among our first Christian ancestors, disrupting the community life of the early church. But today’s Acts of the Apostles shows how beautifully the Holy Spirit, promised by Jesus in today’s Gospel, helped the church achieve a grace-filled resolution. What evolved was that “reconciled diversity,” often encouraged by Pope Francis and even envisioned in today’s Revelation passage; and a wondrous experience of Jesus’ promised Gospel gift: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you.” Archdiocesan Family Prayer Loving and faithful God, through the years the people of our archdiocese have appreciated the prayers and love of Our Lady of Prompt Succor in times of war, disaster, epidemic and illness. We come to you, Father, with Mary our Mother, and ask you to help us in the battle of today against violence, murder and racism. We implore you to give us your wisdom that we may build a community founded on the values of Jesus, which gives respect to the life and dignity of all people. Bless parents that they may form their children in faith. Bless and protect our youth that they may be peacemakers of our time. Give consolation to those who have lost loved ones through violence. Hear our prayer and give us the perseverance to be a voice for life and human dignity in our community. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Our Lady of Prompt Succor, hasten to help us. Mother Henriette Delille, pray for us that we may be a holy family. Amen. St. Catherine of Siena Parish Prayer God, Our Father, we thank you for our parish community of St. Catherine of Siena. Thank you for the many blessings that you have given us, but especially for calling us to serve as disciples of your son, Jesus Christ. As we gather today, we ask that you send your Holy Spirit to guide us in everything that we do. Transform our hearts and lead us closer to you. Help us always to seek to be a parish that is Centered on Christ and Ablaze with Love. We ask all of these things in the name of Jesus, and through the intercession of our Blessed Mother. St. Catherine of Siena, pray for us! St. Michael the Archangel Prayer St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host, by the power of God, cast into hell Satan and all evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

Meet Seminarian Lennin Arroyo I am from Colombia, a country of south America. I was born in a small town called Monteria but my family now lives in a big city called Medellin. I discovered my vocation to the priesthood there while in a community of laity that helps the homeless. In this community, I was named a youth leader and I felt responsible for helping the young people to experience God through prayer and helping the needy. I had visited the homes of the young people and talked to the parents so they would know what their children do in the community. Over time I felt like a shepherd taking care of the young people as though God had placed them under my care.

Many people with vocations invited me to experience communities and seminaries and I knew that God was calling me to imitate him as a good shepherd. During my last year of seminary in Colombia, Father Sergio Serrano arrived and asked the rector if he had vocations available to go to the Archdiocese of New Orleans and serve as bilingual priests to sup-port the growing Hispanic communities. The rector of my seminary pro-posed coming to New Orleans to train as a priest of this beautiful Arch-diocese. I was praying and consulting with my spiritual rector and could hear in the voice of my rector the call of God to come to New Orleans and serve Him among the most needy. I arrived in New Orleans two years ago and my challenge has been to learn English as a second language. Our beloved Archbishop Gregory Aymond assigned me this summer to St. Catherine of Siena Parish and I am very happy because I will be able to approach the community to tell them about the beautiful experience of my call to serve. I am ready to serve in this beautiful community, but as a seminarian I also need a lot of training and help to practice my English. With the grace of God and the hand of our mother, the Virgin Mary, I will be able to serve with all my heart and grow in knowledge and grace.

Two-Minute Testimony: Jackie Appleton

Unexpected Blessings of this Easter Season! I am a convert to the Catholic faith. I was married to my husband, Bennie, at St. Angela parish in 1973 and, in the early part of 1974, I began instructions with two transitional dea-cons who were assigned to the parish so that I could become a member of the Catholic Church. This was before the current RCIA pro-gram. The two men (transitional deacons) who assisted me in this process were Tom Kinney, who became a priest for our Archdiocese and who passed away in 2005, and Gregory Aymond, who now serves as archbishop of our

Archdiocese. I received my first Communion and was confirmed at the Easter Vigil at St. Angela in 1974 by Archbishop John Favalora, now re-tired from the Archdiocese of Miami, and who was pastor at St. Angela in 1974. I was blessed to have my mother-in-law as my sponsor, and my mother, present at that Easter Vigil and I have truly felt that this was the “best Easter ever,” until this year. I am a part of the Prison Ministry Team here at St. Catherine. I was part of the formative group that began a little less than a year ago, and which has now blossomed into a vibrant team with the support of the parish and beyond to support those among us who are imprisoned. Along with several members of our Prison Ministry Team, through the Re-entry Program headed by Judge Scott Schlegel of the 24th Judicial Court in Jefferson Parish, I am mentoring a young man from Angola who started this Re-entry Program the week before Thanksgiving. I met him in Court the Wednesday after Thanksgiving last year and chat with him on the phone, or meet with him in person, on a weekly basis. My mentee happened to call me on Holy Thursday and, in our conversa-tion, he said that he did not have to work on Friday (Good Friday). I told him I was joining the group from St. Catherine that was walking the nine churches, and I invited him to join me. He said he had never done this and would like to. My mentee has a daughter who just turned six in January and was out of school. We ended the conversation with no pres-

sure—just that, if he thought he would like to join our group, to send me a text. And he did!!! I picked him and his daughter up Friday morning and we met the group from St. Catherine at St. Stephen’s church to begin our prayer and walk. Unbeknownst to me, this is where my mentee was baptized! We can never question the work of the Holy Spirit! I introduced him to all as my friend, with his daughter, and everyone was so welcoming. But I also shared privately with Father Tim that this was my mentee. The prayer and walk are one that I will treasure forev-er. At St. Alphonsus Father Tim invited my mentee to lead the Station of the Cross. And, when we ended our walk at Immaculate Conception, Father Tim thanked him for joining us and told him that he was wel-come at St. Catherine anytime. What a blessing!! As we rode the streetcar back to Napoleon Avenue we talked about the experience, the beauty of the day, the specialness of the churches, and the gift of faith. I asked him if he was a little nervous leading the sta-tion and he said he wasn’t, that different people in the group had been asked to lead a station and he was comfortable and pleased to have been asked. In the car on the ride home his daughter fell fast asleep in the back seat! She was a real trooper! He said that he truly enjoyed the walk and visiting the churches and I said, hopefully, that he would get back to attending church. Early Easter Sunday morning he sent me a “Happy Easter” text. When he called me during the week I asked if he had made it to church Easter Sunday and he said “yes”!! The working of the Holy Spirit is so evident to me in this chain of events that I am still awed by what happened. Now this is going to be treasured as “my best Easter ever”!!!

Archdiocese of Tororo, Uganda Mission Appeal

Prime Time Garden Party

ABOUT THE ARCHDIOCESE OF TORORO, UGANDA

The Archdiocese of Tororo, covering an approximate area of 8,500 square miles, serves an estimated population of 3.6 million people, about 1.2 million of whom are Catholics. These are some of our needs. 1) Parishes: caring for 45 parishes, 984 missions or sub-parishes 2) Formation of pastoral ministers: • Currently we have about 315 seminarians, about a quarter of whom will proceed on to the major seminary. We

have about 40 seminarians studying in the philosophical and theological seminaries. • We currently have 117 native diocesan priests and 9 religious priests. Once ordained, our priests need to continue

their formation, especially by attending educational workshops and spiritual retreats. • The 945 catechists serve the mission churches (sub-parishes). 3) Transportation of pastoral ministers: The priests and catechists need to travel to and from the mission churches, usually by means of scooters and bicycles. 4) Education: In collaboration with the Government of Uganda, the Archdiocese runs several Primary, Secondary, and Technical schools. Most of these schools, run by our 16 native religious brothers and 243 native religious sisters, are in rural settings where there is no electricity; there are no computers and not enough textbooks and laboratory equipment. The teaching and learning process becomes very difficult in such an environment. 5) Health: The Archdiocese has one hospital, three sub-hospitals, and twelve small medical facilities through which we try to fulfill Christ’s ministry of physical healing. These facilities, usually run by the religious sisters, are not funded by the Government and must depend on user fees to purchase drugs and equipment and cover the cost of personnel. 6) Economic development: The Archdiocese of Tororo, through its development arm, CARITAS, empowers the laity with skills that can improve their economic base. 69% of the people are peasant farmers with small plots of land on which to cultivate their crops. Because of this, most of them live from hand to mouth, which has an adverse impact on their income. Through CARITAS-Tororo, the Archdiocese runs programs, especially in the area of improved agricultural methods, so that families can sustain themselves better economically. 7) Women: Archdiocesan Women’s Desk focuses on the realities of women. When empowered, women can do a great deal to improve their families’ economic situation as well as the sanitary condition of their homes. 8) Water: Our Five-Year Strategic Plan includes a program to increase access to clean, safe water.
