On Saturday, September 17th, there was the ordination for several men in our diocese for service as deacons, including Brian Kaluzny from St. Catherine's. Brian has been assigned to St. Catherine’s and we are happy he will be able to stay with us. Please congratulate Brian the next time you see him.
Some parishioners seem to delight in my displays of humanity. So here's a story, which I’ll call “bulletin therapy.” A few weeks ago I locked my keys in the car, and it was a major inconvenience because I was in Vicksburg. Then a couple of weeks later I did it again, although this time I was at the rectory. I was ready this time and went over to the office to get my second set of keys. a) It was an electronic car lock, and the door opener’s battery was dead, so I still couldn't get in. b) Next, I tried to imitate what the towing company had done to my car. So I propped open the door and stuck in a hanger and tried to hit the electric lock button. But the hanger just flopped around never got close to the button, and I still couldn't get in. c) So I bit the bullet and called the towing service. They came about 20 minutes later and the driver tried the same thing with his special rod. He came very close to the button but couldn't get leverage to actually hit the button to pop open the lock. d) Then he said to me, “Does your door opener have a key? and I said “Yes; why?” And he inserted the key into the lock of the door and opened the door. Major embarrassment for me; a cause of delight for the tow service driver. e) So was a little frazzled as I headed off to the theater. I arrived a little bit early, and noticed there weren’t many cars, but there was a WMU football game that evening so I thought I’d get a good seat. When I walked up to the theater entrance the doors were locked. I walked around the building to the other entrances and they were locked too. Then I looked at my ticket and saw that I was a week early. Towing service call -- $55. Walk around the theater -- good exercise. Four hours later, a memory -- priceless??

40 DAY New Evangelization Convocation October 13 and 14 Calling all Catholic leaders! Come grow in the faith at the Annual New Evangelization Convocation. The convocation is for all Catholic leaders, the theme this year is Missionary Disciples, with the keynote given by Damon and Melanie Owens. The convocation is at Hackett Catholic Prep. You may attend one or both days. You can still make a difference! Though this campaign to pray for an end to abortion has already begun, and runs through November 5, 2017, you are still needed. Please consider offering 1 hour of your time to pray in front of Planned Parenthood, located at 4201 W. Michigan Avenue, Kalamazoo, MI. You can sign up by going to www.40daysforlife.com/kalamazoo or calling John Byrne at 269-327-8658 or [email protected]. ARE YOU A FIRST GENERATION IRISH IMMIGRANT? IF YOU ARE, THE RECIPES FOR CHANGE COMMITTEE NEEDS YOUR HELP. Each year our group plans a dinner here at the parish to honor and teach about different cultures in our parish family. This time, we are planning an Irish Dinner on St. Patrick's Day, Saturday March 17th at 7 PM in Marian Hall. We could use your help in planning the food, decorations, cultural information, entertainment, etc. We would also accept your recommendations for musicians and dancers for our event. If you would be willing to help us out, please contact Irene Dunlap at 269-323-0659 so we can arrange to meet with you. Please join Life Chain 2017 this Sunday, October 1, to peacefully and prayerfully witness for life. Meet in the parking lot behind Fannie May Candies at 2:15 pm; pray 2:30 – 3:30 pm.

Mark your calendars, please, for the visit of Immaculée Illibagiza to Kalamazoo. Many of you know of her through her bestselling book Left to Tell, which described how she escaped death during the genocide in Rwanda in 1994. She is a faith-filled woman who speaks on the topic of forgiveness, pointedly so after so many members of her family were killed. I know from first-hand experience that she is a great speaker, both concerning the trauma that sits below the surface in her homeland, and the power of forgiveness to heal what is broken and scarred. She will be in Kalamazoo on October 19 at 7 pm at WMU’s Miller Auditorium. Tickets are available at www.millerauditorium.com.
RCIA and Adult Faith Formation Jay Landry 978-2331 [email protected]
Do you have deep questions about the meaning of life? Like, what is the path that I am supposed to take? Where do I find the right guide to know this path? Who am I called to be? Where do the moments of great joy come from? How do I deal with brokenness and failure? If you are interested in exploring any of these questions, and more, in an informal, faith-based setting, I invite you to join us for an RCIA inquiry session to explore these deep questions in a prayerful context where we Catholics wrestle with the same questions. Interested? Please contact Jay Landry at the above phone or email. Peace out my friends, Jay Landry.

Youth Ministry Mission Philip Dezern 616-633-0994 [email protected]
CONFIRMATION: LET’S CHANGE THE CONVERSATION! If you are looking to get confirmed this year, here is what we would like you to do to make the experience even better. We will highlight items every week for a few weeks. #1: Have the right mindset: Recognize that Confirmation is not an ending process. If you are looking at this as an ending process or a graduation, you will not get what you need out of this experience. #2: Confirmation Record Keeping Form: This form can be found in the youth ministry packet. If you are in Grades 8 and up and wish to get Confirmed in 2018, then you need to return this form by January 1, 2018. #3: How many hours of Faith Programming do I get to participate in? We are not looking for the least amount of opportunities for you to connect with your faith community. Instead, we see 32 hours of faith development as the starting point to work from. Of course, we want you to have more. Anything less than that leaves you in a situation where you might not get the full experience. Thirty-two hours is less than one hour a week over a full year. We know you can do that!!! #4: We want you to write a Service Hours Paper. Why not just have you turn in a sheet with hours listed? It is because simply putting in hours is not what we are after. We want you to dig deeper. We ask that youth complete service hours because it is important that we serve our fellow brothers and sisters. What we ask is that you do as many hours as you feel is appropriate, not a set amount. Our goal and hope is that you learn from whatever service you provide to family, friends, community organizations, etc. We would ask that you turn in a minimum ½ page paper describing the service you have done since June 2017, what it taught you, and why it was important. #5: We want you to write a Saints Paper. We would like to know what this Saint means to you and how they provide an example for your faith. You do not have to pick a Saint’s name for your Confirmation name. You can use your baptismal name. Mark Your Calendar...On the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, Kalamazoo United hopes to bring together all Christians, Protestants and Catholics, for a free and prayerful event held at Wings Stadium in Kalamazoo on Sunday, October 29, 2017 at 4:00 pm. “We believe God is stirring a new level of unity in our city” wrote Pastor Wenke in his letter to ministry leaders. During the kick-off event, clergy and ministry leaders came together with Bishop Bradley and Pastor Wenke for prayer and to learn more about the vision and strategy for Kalamazoo United.
Please join us at St. Mary's in Paw Paw on Friday October 13th for a special prayer service to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the sixth apparition of our Blessed Mother in Fatima. The day starts with Mass at 8 am, a perpetual rosary will follow all day, and concludes with the exposition of the Blessed Sacrament at 6:30pm and Benediction at 7 pm. If you are interested in leading one or more mysteries, please call 269-657-3066. Silent prayer is always welcome. Confessions will be offered for one hour at 9 am, 12 noon, and 5 pm. Help us to answer our Blessed Mother’s call to pray for the conversion of sinners and reparation to her Immaculate Heart.
