MARCH FOR OUR LIVES RALLY We have opened up the bus that we’ve scheduled to bring us to the March for Our Lives Rally on Saturday, March 24, in Washington, D.C., to the local community in the hope that we can fill it. The bus will leave St. Catherine’s at 4 a.m. and should return around midnight. The cost for the trip is $100 per person, but many generous parishioners are offering scholarship money, so money should not be an obstacle to anyone participating.

If you would like to participate in the rally, please see our website (www.stcathofsiena.org). Information and a link to the registration form are provided on the front page. Anyone can register, and all registrations will be accepted until the bus is full. Children in 8th grade and younger must travel with a parent. High school youth not traveling with a parent will be put in small groups with a chaperone. If you would like to make a donation so that others can attend, or need additional information, please contact Ann Marie at [email protected].

SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION Fr. Joe will be offering extra hours for the Sacrament of Reconciliation in preparation for Easter Sunday. He will be available in the confessional in Church from 3–4:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 24, and from 7–9 p.m. on Tuesday, March 27. The Sacrament is not offered on Saturday, March 31, because of the Easter Vigil.

RED CROSS BLOOD DRIVE We are looking for volunteers on Thursday, March 22, from 1–6 p.m. for a Red Cross Blood Drive. We need people for one-hour shifts to help at the check-in table and to provide food and drink to those donating blood. Please contact Ashley Blank at [email protected] or 257-2493. To give blood, please contact 800-RED-CROSS.

DISCOVERING CHRIST A big thank you to those who participated in the Discovering Christ program—entering into discussion and community, learning and growing in their faith, and exploring a stronger relationship with Jesus. We also owe a huge debt to all those who worked to make Discovering Christ happen—the steering committee, the table facilitators, the hospitality crew, the prayer team, and the many others who jumped in to help when they saw a need. For seven weeks, we hosted 121 people for the program and dinner. We served amazing meals, had great discussions, engaged in a powerful retreat experience, offered the Sacrament of Reconciliation, and established strong bonds of faithful friendship. Through it all, our volunteer staff worked a lot of hours, especially those who decorated, cooked, served, and cleaned up each week. A special thank you to all those who made so many delicious pies for our last meeting this week! St. Catherine’s showed itself again to be a generous group of people, willing to give so freely for the sake of others.

200 CLUB RAFFLE WINNERS

We still have 78 tickets available for the 200 Club, and we would love for you to be a part of this group of parishioners and friends who support our partners in ministry in Monte Plata, Dominican Republic. Tickets are $100 each and are available from the Parish Office and after Masses this weekend. Dinosaur BBQ will be the caterer for the 200 Club Dinner, which will take place on April 28 from 6–8 p.m.

We pulled the first winners for the 200 Club raffle this week and are happy to announce that the following people have won $100 each: Bob Talda, Joyce Billing, Irene Alvisi, Sophia Steh, Larry Walker, and Barb Hoyt!

FORMATION FOR ST. CATHERINE’S STAFF Fr. Joe, Ann Marie, Ashley, and Sherry are attending the Los Angeles Religious Education Congress this weekend (March 15–18). They are enjoying the opportunity to attend workshops from excellent speakers in their own areas of ministry, as well as attend keynote presentations, liturgies, and other prayer experiences. They will be returning to the office this Wednesday, March 21.

FRONT DESK HELP NEEDED Can you help out in the Parish Office? We are looking for volunteers who can sit at the front desk during business hours to answer the phone and greet visitors. If you are interested, please contact June in the Parish Office at [email protected] or 257-2493. Many thanks!

ADVOCATING FOR GUN REFORM Last Sunday, parishioners met to discuss the problem of gun violence in our country and what can be done about it. They raised many great points, from the right to security to how to move toward a more peaceful coexistence. The handouts included names, addresses, and phone numbers of state and federal legislators as well as effective ways to contact them. These handouts will be posted on St. Catherine’s website for your use.

Four key actions were identified as realistic and doable: 1) Ban assault rifles; 2) Ban bump-stocks; 3) Ban high-capacity magazines; and 4) Require background checks for all gun sales.

Now we ask everyone to do their part. Start by living a peaceful life and teach those around you to do likewise. Discuss your concerns with your neighbors and colleagues and ask them to commit to action. Next, determine how much time you can dedicate each week to gun reform. If you have 5 minutes, call your representative. If you have 10 minutes, send a postcard. If you have an hour a month, join a group advocating for gun safety.

As Catholics, as Christians, we are being called to put our faith into action. Please commit yourself to calling elected officials or sending postcards or letters to state and federal legislators weekly until they take action. Send letters to the editor or op-eds to the local papers. The Peace & Justice Committee will have postcards and address labels at the Ministry Fair for your use.

EASTER CLEANING AND DECORATING As is our custom, we will be cleaning and decorating the Church for Easter beginning at 9 a.m. on

Saturday, March 31. Please bring buckets, rags, and brooms, if you have them; we will have some as well. Cleaning usually lasts until around noon. We clean windows, sweep and wash floors, clean pews and entrance areas, and anything else that needs attention. All ages and abilities are welcome! We will also be doing our decorating for Easter at that time.

ITHACA PEACE FESTIVAL Planning for the Ithaca Peace Festival (September 7–

9, 2018) is now underway. If you are one of the many in our parish community who have helped with this event in the past or are looking for a new way to meet people and contribute to our community, we would love for you to get involved. We are putting together small groups to work on specific tasks so you can make a real difference for the festival.

We are looking for more people to work on the food, silent auction, site coordination, coordination of outside vendors and organizations, volunteer coordination, and more. With your help, we will be able to support many local and international peace initiatives while also celebrating peace and diversity in our own community. Consider sharing your talents and time for a terrific cause. If you are in terested , contact Ted Skibinski a t [email protected]. More information about all of the ways you can help will also be available at the parish Ministry Fair, April 14–15.

GOOD FRIDAY COLLECTION Pope Francis has asked us to support Christians in the Holy Land through the annual Pontifical Good Friday Collection. Through your support, the Catholic Church is able to conduct parish ministry, provide Catholic education, feed the hungry, build housing for Christians, maintain shrines, and operate refugee centers in the Holy Land.

EASTER BASKET BLESSING All are welcome to bring your Easter baskets or Easter foods for a blessing on Saturday, March 31, at

1 p.m. in the Church. This is a time-honored Polish tradition that all are invited to share in. Traditionally, baskets have foods symbolic of Christ (bread, eggs, lamb), but they can also contain Easter candy or other foods.

A vibrant Catholic Community where all are welcomed, challenged, and supported in their life’s journey.

FROM THE BOOK OF JOE

Dear Parish Family,

Palm Sunday is next week. In the general instruction of the Roman Missal, this is what you will find:

On this day the Church recalls the entrance of Christ the Lord into Jerusalem to accomplish his Paschal Mystery. Accordingly, the memorial of this entrance of the Lord takes place at all

Masses, by means of the Procession. At an appropriate hour, a gathering takes place at a smaller church or other suitable place. (We will gather in the Atrium of the Parish Center and process to the Church.)

The faithful (that’s you!) hold branches in their hands. Wearing the red sacred vestments for Mass (we want you to wear red, too, whatever you’ve got), the priest and other ministers approach the place where the people are gathered.

The priest and the people sign themselves and the priest greets them in the usual way. A brief address is given, in which the faithful (that’s you!) are invited to participate actively and consciously in the celebration of this day (like you always do). He sprinkles the branches and then proclaims the Gospel concerning the Lord’s entrance. After the Gospel a brief homily may be given, and then the procession to the main Church begins: “My dear sisters and brothers, like the crowds who acclaimed Jesus in Jerusalem, let us go forth in peace.”

The procession to the Church where Mass will be celebrated then sets off in the usual way (in our case, we will just be processing into Church). If incense is used, the thurifer goes first, carrying the thurible with burning incense, then an acolyte or another minister, carrying the cross decorated with palm branches according to local custom (we don’t have a local custom, but perhaps we will start one!), between two ministers carrying lighted candles. Then follows the deacon carrying the Book of the Gospels (we don’t have a deacon, but a lector will carry it), the priest with the ministers, and, after them, all the faithful (that’s you again!) carrying (and waving) branches. As the procession moves forward, chants in honor of Christ the King are sung by all (led by the choir).

This is the start of the holiest week in our calendar and a wonderful celebration. Remember to wear red, just as I will, as we begin to walk this journey with Jesus to the Cross!

Peace,

A vibrant Catholic Community where all are welcomed, challenged, and supported in their life’s journey.

PHONE FAST On Good Friday this year, consider putting away your smartphone for the day. As the Archdiocese of

Hartford, CT, says, “Silencing our busy phones will give God a chance to call our hearts.”

This isn’t an easy task—but it could be a powerful spiritual opportunity. Giving up our connectedness to the virtual

world can allow us to connect with God and with others. Can you commit to a “phone fast”?

Adult Faith Opportunities

LIFE AND FAITH SESSIONS We hope you will join us for this Sunday’s Life and Faith Session that takes place in the conference room from 10:15–11:15 a.m. We will be watching a talk given by Sr. Miriam Heidland, S.O.L.T., sharing stories about how God loves us unconditionally. Sr. Miriam was a favorite of our young people at NCYC this past year, and she speaks to all ages about what God’s love can do for us.

MOVIE NIGHT Our next Movie Night will be held on Monday, March 19. The movie will be Babette’s Feast. This subtitled film is a fan favorite, telling the story of how food and a feast change the lives of a small Danish town. A pizza and salad dinner is served at 6 p.m. and the movie begins at 6:30 p.m., followed by a

discussion. A $5 donation for dinner is appreciated.

Faith Formation News

NO FAITH FORMATION MARCH 25 AND APRIL 1 Children’s Liturgy of the Word, Children’s Faith Formation, Middle School Youth Ministry, and High School Youth Ministry will not gather for sessions on March 25 and April 1 due to Palm Sunday and Easter. Sessions will resume at their regular times on Sunday, April 8.

“IN THE LOOP” WITH HIGH SCHOOL YOUTH MINISTRY High School Youth Ministry will not gather today, Sunday, March 18, as Ashley will be out of town for a conference. Sessions will resume on Sunday, April 8.

MIDDLE SCHOOL YOUTH MINISTRY Middle School Youth Ministry will gather for a session this Sunday, March 18, for a session that focuses on the Paschal Mystery. The Resurrection can be difficult for young people to understand, especially if only looked at as a historical event. This session invites middle school youth to think of the Paschal Mystery as a way of living life—accepting the deaths that come our way and learning how to rise again from them. St. Catherine’s parishioners will give witness talks about rising from the struggles in their lives. This is a Confirmation topic and is required for Confirmation candidates. We will also celebrate March birthdays and have pizza.

Education News NOTRE DAME—ELMIRA Notre Dame High School in Elmira, grades 7–12, is now accepting registrations for the 2018–2019 academic year. Tours and shadowing experiences are highly encouraged. Schedule tours and shadowing experiences by contacting Michelle Barkley at 734-2267, ext. 321. See www.notredamehighschool.com for admission applications. A bus is available for students from Ithaca and surrounding towns.
