Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time

October 21, 2018

FOCUS: Through his suffering, Jesus justifies many and sympathizes with us in our weaknesses.

The coming of the kingdom has renewed all crea-tion. Its fulfillment in Christ will bring complete renewal and hope. Even the difficult issue of suffer-ing changed. No longer without meaning or pur-pose, it has become an opportunity to serve and to be intimately joined to Christ, the Suffering Serv-ant.

LITURGY OF THE WORD: The prophet Isaiah

foretells the burden to be borne by the Suffering Servant, and how through that suffering the world would find redemption. The writer of Hebrews re-minds us that Christ, in sharing our human condi-tion, truly understands our struggles and tempta-tions. In the Gospel, Jesus teaches us that disciple-ship and suffering are intimately related.

REFLECTION: Hebrews reminds us that the One who has shared our human lot of suffering and temptation is now enthroned in the heavenly realm. But his position "on high" does not make him unap-proachable and above our struggles. Thus, when we approach Christ in prayer we can expect mercy and a sympathetic hearing from his "throne of grace."

So we ask ourselves:

Do we expect mercy from Christ each time we ask for it?

Then, how does that mercy show itself in how we treat others?

November—All Souls Remembrance

During November, the month of sacred remembrance, we bring before God the names of our loved ones who have passed from this life. We acknowledge our enduring love; we express our hope that they be eternally blessed, and we share our desire to be reunited with them in the everlasting glory made possible through the Resurrection of Jesus.

We encourage everyone to write down and send in the names of your loved ones who have died (and you do not have to send a donation). Your loved ones’ names will be in a special memorial basket placed near the altar for remem-brance during the entire month of November. You may place this in the collection basket or deliver to the rectory. Loving God, we remember now in prayer our dearly departed. May they rest in peace with you and experience the eternal joy of heaven. Merciful Lord, strengthen our hope that we, too, will one day share

in the resurrection of your Son who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.
