ADVENT: ACTIVE WAITING

With the first Sunday of Advent, we begin a new liturgical year. The word

“Advent” comes from the Latin word “adventus”, which means “arrival”, “coming”. If we

expect someone to arrive, to come – we wait in anticipation. For some reason, as I was

preparing myself for Advent, the word “wait” kept popping into my head. Last year during this time of

the year, I did a little survey among close friends and family and asked them one question: What are you

waiting for right now with great anticipation? To my surprise, I got many responses: I am waiting for

my promotion in my job. I am waiting for my chemotherapy to be over. I am waiting for my husband to

come home from the military. I am waiting for my children to visit for Christmas. I am waiting for our

new baby. I am waiting for my job interview. I am waiting for someone to marry me, to which I

responded, “you have a priest already here!, call me if you find someone or someone finds you.” But,

two people also said “I’m not waiting for anything.”

What about you? What are you waiting for with great anticipation at this moment of your life?

And, where does God fit in this waiting, or is he even part of the picture?

Why wait for God to arrive or to come in to our lives if St. Augustine says that God is closer to

us than we are to ourselves? Does God ever leave us? It’s not God who leaves, but it’s us who

sometimes leave God and wander around. The season of Advent is not just about waiting for God

passively to come again in our lives anew, but it’s also a time to actively find our way back to him so

that we can arrive once again to his loving embrace. As the psalmist says, “Lord, make us turn to you;

let us see your face and we shall be saved.” So, let our Advent today be a two-way process: In as much

as we wait for God, let us also seek ways to arrive to him. And how do we arrive at him? By entering

into the life that he invites us. Many of us might say, “well I’m here every Sunday, so I can say that I

have arrived already at God-zone.” We don’t have to necessarily leave home in order to be away or to

wander around. I know people who feel so far away from their spouse even though they sleep in one bed

every night and they see each other every day. And, just like that, one can also go through the routine of

Sunday obligation and faith life and still feel so disconnected from God because of the choices that we

make and the lifestyle that one chooses to embrace. Let us make this Advent our best Advent possible,

by heeding what the collect/opening prayer today said. The opening prayer just beautifully sums up our

Advent disposition — let’s hear it again: “Grant your faithful, we pray, almighty God, the resolve to run

forth to meet your Christ with righteous deed at his coming, so that gathered at his right hand, they may

be worthy to possess the heavenly kingdom.” Our disposition for this Advent as what we heard is “to

have the resolve to run forth to meet Christ with righteous deed at his coming.” To run, not just to walk.

There’s a sense of urgency and earnestness. What are those things that I find myself doing over and over

again, like a slave of them, that are not so righteous, thus hindering me to possess the heavenly

kingdom? – Fr. Cary

One of the most important images of Advent is light. Advent ends with the Gospel proclamation that includes

this portion of the Canticle of Zechariah: “The dawn from on high shall break upon us, to shine on those who

dwell in darkness and the shadow of death, and to guide our feet into the way of peace” (Luke 1:78-79).

Advent ends with the breaking of the dawn, but it begins with the lighting of a tiny flame on a single purple

candle. As small and insignificant as this flame may appear in the darkness, it is full of hope. Anyone who has

ever climbed up the slopes of Mount Hood at one o’clock in the morning knows how important even the tiniest

flicker of light can be. You know you are on the right path. You know you are not alone. That’s what the first

Advent candle represents. It brings light of hope into a dark world. It is the reminder of a promise that has been

kept and will be kept again. We are not alone. Christ came into the world once and he will come into the world

again.

Swag represent hope and joy to hundreds of children and

adults who may be expecting a bleak Christmas. Each tag

contains a gift request collected from clients of our parish’s

Social Concerns Ministry and St. Vincent de Paul ministries.

Please take a tag or two and make Christmas bright for others.

Hints on Wrapping these Special Presents

Please wrap these gifts with the care you would take if you

knew this was the only gift the person will get this Christmas.

That may be the case. Those colored tags must be attached to

gifts to help the volunteers sort them. But those tags will be

removed and replaced by a traditional name tag. So tie

them to the ribbon or tape the yarn under the bow, but please

DO NOT tape them so that volunteers have to rip the paper to

remove them.

Volunteers will sort and bag the gifts on Monday, Dec. 10.

Any missing gifts must be purchased by Social Concerns and

St. Vincent de Paul. Please return your gifts to the Parish

Center.

Volunteers Needed for Gift Sorting & Christmas Deliveries

(School Parents Can Earn SHARE Hours)

Here’s an opportunity to add joy to your Christmas season.

Volunteer to organize or deliver food and gifts to families

struggling to make ends meet this holiday. St. Vincent de Paul

needs help sorting, buying and wrapping presents and

additional drivers to deliver Christmas gifts and food boxes.

We need volunteers to sort the gifts Monday – Wednesday,

December 10-12. We also need volunteers to make

reminder calls to recipients that week.

Deliveries happen on Saturday, December 15 from 9 am till

about noon. Come enjoy coffee and treats and get your

maps and delivery instructions. It’s easy, well organized and

promises to be the most fun you’ll have this Christmas season.

MARIAN GARDEN DEDICATION

Our Lady of Peace Retreat House in Beaverton

Saturday, December 8th, 10:30am, Archbishop Emeritus John Vlazny will dedicate the Marian

Garden and Shrine to the Unborn and Memorial Wall at Our Lady of Peace Retreat House in Beaverton. The Sisters at Our Lady of Peace are thankful to Westside Masonry and Vince Rigert for their untiring work to bring this Marian Garden to reality. Please join us for this special event at 3600 SW 170th Avenue, Beaverton. The Knights of Columbus Honor Guards will help dedicate our garden.

The Memorial Wall will have names engraved for remembrance and healing for children lost whether from natural causes or the abortion procedure. Anyone can participate in the wall with their own personal inscription. 15 characters per line. $60 per line.

San Francisco Javier, gran evangelizador del siglo 16

en el oriente, español, fue uno de los primeros

sacerdotes JESUITAS, orden fundada por San Ignacio

de Loyola. Al poco tiempo de ordenación, Ignacio lo

mandó a INDIA, donde laboró como misionero entre la

gente por varios años. Intentó extender la fe en

JAPÓN, pero encontró muchísima resistencia, e

incluso persecución, especialmente entre los maestros

budistas y líderes civiles. San Francisco murió de una

fiebre fuerte, mientras esperaba el barco que lo

llevaría a evangelizar en CHINA.

SAN AMBROSIO, famosísimo obispo y doctor de la

Iglesia del siglo 4 en Milán, Italia, defendió las

enseñanzas apostólicas de la Iglesia contra los

poderosos y numerosos seguidores de Ario de su

tiempo. Tuvo una influencia grande e importantísima

en SAN AGUSTÍN, y fue instrumental en su

conversión. Además de ser un extraordinario teólogo

y maestro, San Ambrosio tuvo un impacto muy

positivo en la LITURGIA y la composición de himnos

y música para celebraciones litúrgicas.

I DOMINGO DE ADVIENTO ~ 2 DE DICIEMBRE 2018

GLORIA

Gloria a Dios en el cielo, y en la tierra paz a los hombres que ama el Señor. Por tu inmensa gloria te alabamos,

te bendecimos, te adoramos, te glorificamos, te damos gracias, Señor Dios, Rey celestial, Dios Padre

todopoderoso Señor, Hijo único, Jesucristo.Señor Dios, Cordero de Dios, Hijo del Padre; tú que quitas el

pecado del mundo, ten piedad de nosotros; tú que quitas el pecado del mundo, atiende nuestra súplica; tú que

estás sentado a la derecha del Padre, ten piedad de nosotros; porque sólo tú eres Santo, sólo tú Señor, sólo tú

Altísimo, Jesucristo, con el Espíritu Santo en la gloria de Dios Padre. Amen.

PRIMERA LECTURA ~ JEREMÍAS 33, 14-16

"Se acercan los días, dice el Señor, en que cumpliré la promesa que hice a la casa de Israel y a la casa de Judá.

En aquellos días y en aquella hora, yo haré nacer del tronco de David un vástago santo, que ejercerá la justicia

y el derecho en la tierra. Entonces Judá estará a salvo, Jerusalén estará segura y la llamarán 'el Señor es

nuestra justicia' ".

SEGUNDA LECTURA ~ 1 TESALONICENSES 3, 12–4, 2

Hermanos: Que el Señor los llene y los haga rebosar de un amor mutuo y hacia todos los demás, como el que

yo les tengo a ustedes, para que él conserve sus corazones irreprochables en la santidad ante Dios, nuestro

Padre, hasta el día en que venga nuestro Señor Jesús, en compañía de todos sus santos.

Por lo demás, hermanos, les rogamos y los exhortamos en el nombre del Señor Jesús a que vivan como

conviene, para agradar a Dios, según aprendieron de nosotros, a fin de que sigan ustedes progresando. Ya

conocen, en efecto, las instrucciones que les hemos dado de parte del Señor Jesús.

EVANGELIO ~ LUCAS 21, 25-28. 34-36

En aquel tiempo, Jesús dijo a sus discípulos: "Habrá señales prodigiosas en el sol, en la luna y en las estrellas.

En la tierra, las naciones se llenarán de angustia y de miedo por el estruendo de las olas del mar; la gente se

morirá de terror y de angustiosa espera por las cosas que vendrán sobre el mundo, pues hasta las estrellas se

bambolearán. Entonces verán venir al Hijo del hombre en una nube, con gran poder y majestad.

Cuando estas cosas comiencen a suceder, pongan atención y levanten la cabeza, porque se acerca la hora de su

liberación. Estén alerta, para que los vicios, con el libertinaje, la embriaguez y las preocupaciones de esta vida

no entorpezcan su mente y aquel día los sorprenda desprevenidos; porque caerá de repente como una trampa

sobre todos los habitantes de la tierra.

Velen, pues, y hagan oración continuamente, para que puedan escapar de todo lo que ha de suceder y

comparecer seguros ante el Hijo del hombre.

ORACIÓN A SAN MIGUEL ARCÁNGEL

San Miguel Arcángel, defiéndenos en la batalla. Sé nuestro amparo contra las perversidades y asechanzas del

demonio.

Reprímale Dios, pedimos suplicantes, y tú, príncipe de la milicia celestial, arroja al infierno con el divino

poder a Satanás y a los otros espíritus malignos que andan dispersos por el mundo para la perdición de las

almas. AMEN.
