These feasts highlight the article of the Creed that affirms our belief in the Communion of Saints. Baptism made us members of the Church and saints, reflecting the holiness that God has placed within us. We journey through life hoping and working to persevere in holiness so that we can join our saintly brothers and sisters, now victorious before the throne of God for all eternity. November 2nd’s feast of All Souls reminded us that we are also united to our saintly brothers and sisters, as they transition from an imperfect holiness on earth to perfect purity and holiness in heaven. This process of purification after death is called purgatory, which as the catechism reminds us, is different from the eternal punishment of hell. Prayer for the dead identifies our belief that we can assist our brothers and sisters in this transition. The practice of prayer for the dead is very ancient in the Church cited in the first centuries. There are biblical precedence as well. Among the most notable are the Old Testament book of Maccabees (2Mac12:46). There are a couple of New Testament references that point to a purification after death (1Cor3:15 and 1Peter1:7). The practice of prayer for the dead is shared with the Orthodox but rejected by most Protestants in the wake of abuses around the practice at the time of the Reformation. While prayer for the dead occurs in every Mass and is something we should do throughout the year, there is special attention to the prayer in November. At St. Cecilia the names that have been put forth for this prayer are left in a simple box before the altar throughout the month. There is no explanation of exactly how this prayer works. It is important to remember we are in time, the deceased are not. Our prayers, over time, in God’s infinite foreknowledge, are attached to that moment of our deceased transition beyond the limits of time. Yours in Christ,

PRINCIPAL’S CORNER

Each month, we focus on a value, school-wide. We changed most of our values this year, in order to expand our students’ repertoire. Each November, however, we will always return to GRATITUDE as our central theme. We will never tire of giving thanks for our many, many blessings.

Behind the crucifix on my office shelf sits a single sentence written last November by 4th grader Enrique Aguilar. Every student wrote what they gave thanks for and we posted them on our huge bulletin board which welcomes all visitors. Enrique wrote:

LE DOY GRACIAS A DIOS POR MI VIDA.

I GIVE THANKS TO GOD FOR MY LIFE.

Every day, Enrique arrives with an energy that is infectious. He absolutely loves to learn. He is happy to be with his classmates and he greets me every morning with a joyful smile. He gives his all to whatever he does. Enrique is an exceptional soccer player and has dreams of playing on the Seattle traveling team next year.

His speed, skill and exuberance on the soccer field are unmatched.

Enrique has impacted every teacher and child at our school with his joyful spirit.

Through his example, we are all reminded to live fully each day. Our very lives are a testament to our GRATITUDE of the uniqueness we each bring to the world.

I give thanks to God for Enrique and for ALL of our wonderful SCCS students.

Respectfully,

Susan Kilbane St. Cecilia Catholic School is a faith-based community which

inspires an inquisitive mind and a lifelong commitment to learning and stewardship.
