It is an introduction that I have developed over the years that I call the “basic Catholic viewpoint,” or outline. In identifying and only briefly describing these beliefs, I will also note what we share with other religious believers and what is specific to Catholicism. Our most fundamental belief is in God, or more specifically a God, or even more precisely The God. The God we Catholics believe in is the personal, loving Creator. As Creator we mean He is all-powerful and all- knowing, the source of all that is or will be. In calling Him personal we mean that He is capable and interested in relating to us, person to person. And the quality or characteristic of that relating is love. The all-powerful God we believe in wants good and happiness for us. A corollary to belief in a personal, loving Creator is that we believe He has revealed Himself to us. Belief in this sort of God is shared with all other Christians, as well as Jews and Muslims. It is the belief that there is only one God, and He is the God of all people. Belief in this sort of God does distinguish Catholics from those who believe in some divine entity or power or transcendent reality, beyond the merely individual human person, without recognizing a personal being who loves. This less specific notion of a divinity is found among what are called the eastern or mystical religions. For further reading on the basic desire for God, one may read the Catechism of the Catholic Church, paragraphs 27 through 49. For further reading on the God whom Catholics are called to believe in see the Catechism, paragraphs 195 through 231. This installment represents the first of six points of the Basic Catholic Outline. Next, a word on the corollary belief in how God reveals. Yours in Christ,

MISSION STATEMENT: As part of the living Body of Christ, Saint Cecilia parish on Bainbridge Island seeks to conform to the will of God through faith, works, teaching and stewardship of God’s creation as guided by the Holy Spirit, by the teachings of Christ, and the Grace of the Father. We celebrate this mission daily in prayer, liturgy, sacraments and life.

Dear Parishioners,

I would like to begin a series of letters that will address our basic Catholic beliefs.

KUDOS AND UPDATES

Liturgy Schedule: Father Lam from Maryknoll will be visiting St. Cecilia Parish the weekend of July 22 & 23, and will be saying Mass at the Saturday Vigil and Sunday Masses. Please make him feel welcome!

The Saint Cecilia Catholic School Scholarships were presented Saturday, June 17th. The recipient of the $5,000 Garnet Logan memorial Scholarship was the Mares Zermeno family: Citaly (7th), Jesus (6th), and Israel (K). The recipient of the $2,500 Patrick Middleton Scholarship was Enrique Aguilar (5th). And finally, the $2,000 Patrick Middleton scholarship for a rising Freshman attending a Catholic High School was awarded to Ella Carson-Holt. Congratulations to these students! And thank you to their parents who strive to provide a Catholic Education for their children.

2017 Knights of Columbus College Scholarship Recipients: The annual college scholarships of the Knights of Columbus, Archbishop Thomas J. Murphy Council, of Saint Cecilia Parish have been awarded. Recipients for 2017 are Julia Trivers and Zachary Keith. These $1000 grants are made to graduating seniors of St. Cecilia Parish families, based on their excellent high school records and on the merits of essays which they have submitted. They will be presented at the Knights of Columbus breakfast on July 9th. Both Julia and Zachary plan to matriculate at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff. We are proud of them and wish them the best in the next phase of their academic careers.

Sweet success! Thanks to all the dough makers,

Youthies and their parents who were involved

with the Youthies ice cream sandwich sale this

year at the Grand Old 4th of July celebration. We

had more dough, so we could earn more dough!

Our success is a direct result of our parishioners'

support. This year we made a record amount of

chocolate chip cookie ice cream sandwiches (over

600) and sold out! Our fearless Youthies leader,

Neill Raymond, along with his wife Patti, puts his

blood, sweat and tears into this fundraiser and we

cannot thank him enough for his amazing

leadership, patience, and resourcefulness. After

two years as chief cookie baker and ice cream

assembler, Colleen Trivers is stepping down and

we want to send out a huge thank you to her for

streamlining the cookie making process! We also

want to thank T&C Market for allowing us to store

our product in their walk-in freezer. Thanks again

to everyone who had a part in another successful

ice cream cookie sale!

The Knights of Columbus established the Grand Knight Richard Hassell Memorial Scholarship Fund in 2014, and this year we will add a contribution in the amount of $2000.00. The goal of this fund is to assist with tuition support for one or more families with one or more children who are eligible for admission, or currently attending Saint Cecilia Catholic School. The family or families, who will receive support and the amount of that support, will be determined by the SCCS Principal, with consideration given to specific requests and financial need, along with the advice and consent of the School Commission. The names of recipients will not be disclosed. The Principal of SCCS will make the existence of the fund known to all present and potential SCCS families so that application for support can be made.

PRINCIPAL’S CORNER

Serena Zyskowski, a.k.a Mrs. Z, is an amazing teacher. In addition to teaching kindergarten, she is the reading teacher for our 1st/2nd graders. She witnesses the miracle of reading over and over again. She also facilitates students’ capacity to read fluently with understanding over a three-year period.

In the final five days of school this year, Mrs. Z ate lunch and read with three advanced 2nd graders who wanted to finish their chapter book. She knows each students’ reading strengths along with their areas of need. Mrs. Z also coordinates with K-2nd writing teacher, Ms. Cornell, so that writing and reading instruction go hand-in-hand all year.

Throughout May, Mrs. Z’s kinder kids were busy observing, drawing, and reading and writing about chicks that hatched before their eyes. They named the chicks and were over-the-moon excited each day to hold and observe them.

During the final week of school, kindergarteners and their 5th/6th buddies sorted the many clothing items collected throughout the school year. Sorting the clothes was integral to their yearlong stewardship project and it was an authentic way to meet one of the kindergarten mathematics standards.

The experiences Mrs. Z provides is the best I have seen (that includes my own three years of teaching kindergarten!). Everything Mrs. Z does with her students builds in a developmentally appropriate way. Having an exceptional kindergarten year sets a child up for a lifetime of learning. Call me if you would like to learn more about our Kindergarten curriculum and the incredible Mrs. Z!

With joy, Susan Kilbane
