We celebrate this mission daily in prayer, liturgy, sacraments and life. Dear Parishioners, The Second Vatican Council, when it convened in the mid 1960’s addressed the Sacred Liturgy, especially the Mass. For the first time since the Council of Trent, the liturgy was reformed to enrich “that fully conscious and active participation in liturgical celebrations which is demanded by the very nature of the liturgy….” Many pastors would agree that there is still much to do to fulfil that vision. In evaluating the effect of the implementation of the Second Vatican Council we should recall the context of the faithful who gathered for Mass. It was celebrated in Latin. The celebrant stood at the high altar, oriented toward God, with his back to the people whom he was leading before God. He spoke in quiet tones. Apart from some small initiatives that began before the council, only the priest, the altar boy, and the choir spoke or sung the prayers of the Mass. One could read from a missal with the Latin words on one side and the English on the other to be more personally engaged in the liturgy. I believe the implementation of the council gave more attention to the active rather than fully conscious participation. That was practical as people needed to learn how to pray aloud together or respond in dialogue with the priest, now in one’s own language. The modifications included allowing more people to have roles in the liturgy such as reading or assisting in the distribution of Holy Communion. There were and continue to be great efforts to teach people about the Mass and enhance the fully conscious participation. However, pastors do wonder when they witness a less than one hundred percent active participation in terms of what can be heard. Last week I observed that being present at Mass is the first step in active participation. The council reminds us that even prior to our disposition, our faith, our knowledge or sense of being converted believers, we acknowledge what we have come to celebrate. May our Lenten efforts draw us closer to Jesus and one another especially through a more fully conscious participation in the Mass. Yours in Christ,

PRINCIPAL’S CORNER

We had a wonderful turnout last weekend at our Open House! Thank you to all who joined us to celebrate our school and welcome new families. Five new students have already been enrolled for the 2018-2019 school year. Photos of our Catholic Schools Week activities are up on our Facebook page. Please “Like and Share” us on Facebook so that you can follow our students’ learning and stewardship projects throughout the year. Each month we focus on one value or habit, weaving it throughout our day so students have a solid understanding of the meaning and so they develop the habit of living out the word at school, at home and in the community. Our words from September through January include: ENGAGE, RESPECT, APPRECIATE, GRATITUDE, SELF-CONTROL, and PERSEVERANCE. We will focus on EMPATHY throughout the month of February. By practicing and internalizing our Words of the Month on a daily basis, we are living out our faith. Parents are focusing on these words at home as well. The home-school partnership is at the foundation of our school success. The word is out about our wonderful school. Throughout January I have been answering questions and leading tours for prospective families. Our doors are open to all families. Now is the time to enroll.

With joy,
