Dear Friends,S

We are turning our chapel into a Eucharistic Reposition and Confession Chapel, so for about a month all

daily Masses will be held in our parish center as the chapel is renovated (and noise affects the adjacent

church), and in about a month our new chapel will be finished and all Masses will be held in the church. I

believe you will like our new chapel and having more space for prayer in front of the Most Blessed Sacrament,

as well as real confessionals for going to confession!

Two events this week focus our prayers, thoughts, words and works on our Christian duty to promote justice

and peace.

1. This Monday our parish is closed as we observe MLK Day. As he wrote: “It is quite easy for me to

think of a God of love mainly because I grew up in a family where love was central and where lovely

relationships were ever present. . . . Even though I have never had an abrupt conversion experience,

religion has been real to me and closely knitted to life. In fact the two cannot be separated; religion for

me is life.” (Martin Luther King, Jr., Autobiography of Religious Development) Indeed, it was MLK’s

faith and love that moved him to work for justice in racial equality, overturning unjust laws and

transforming our nation for the better.

2. This Friday our parish is also closed (following the Federal Government and Arlington County Public

Schools) as our new President is inaugurated. Let us pray that he and his administration will foster

peace and justice especially for the weakest and most vulnerable–that is, for those who are most in

need of them. Consider this prayer written in 1791 by our nation’s first bishop, Archbishop John Carroll:

Prayer for Government

We pray, Thee O Almighty and Eternal God! Who through Jesus Christ hast revealed Thy glory to all nations, to preserve

the works of Thy mercy, that Thy Church, being spread through the whole world, may continue with unchanging faith in the confession of

Thy Name.

We pray Thee, who alone art good and holy, to endow with heavenly knowledge, sincere zeal, and sanctity of life, our

chief bishop, Pope N., the Vicar of Our Lord Jesus Christ, in the government of his Church; our own bishop, N., all other bishops, prelates,

and pastors of the Church; and especially those who are appointed to exercise amongst us the functions of the holy ministry, and conduct

Thy people into the ways of salvation.

We pray Thee O God of might, wisdom, and justice! Through whom authority is rightly administered, laws are enacted,

and judgment decreed, assist with Thy Holy Spirit of counsel and fortitude the President of these United States, that his administration

may be conducted in righteousness, and be eminently useful to Thy people over whom he presides; by encouraging due respect for virtue

and religion; by a faithful execution of the laws in justice and mercy; and by restraining vice and immorality. Let the light of Thy divine

wisdom direct the deliberations of Congress, and shine forth in all the proceedings and laws framed for our rule and government, so that

they may tend to the preservation of peace, the promotion of national happiness, the increase of industry, sobriety, and useful knowledge;

and may perpetuate to us the blessing of equal liberty.

We pray for his excellency, the governor of this state, for the members of the assembly, for all judges, magistrates, and

other officers who are appointed to guard our political welfare, that they may be enabled, by Thy powerful protection, to discharge the

duties of their respective stations with honesty and ability.

We recommend likewise, to Thy unbounded mercy, all our brethren and fellow citizens throughout the United States, that

they may be blessed in the knowledge and sanctified in the observance of Thy most holy law; that they may be preserved in union, and in

that peace which the world cannot give; and after enjoying the blessings of this life, be admitted to those which are eternal.

Finally, we pray to Thee, O Lord of mercy, to remember the souls of Thy servants departed who are gone before us with

the sign of faith and repose in the sleep of peace; the souls of our parents, relatives, and friends; of those who, when living, were

members of this congregation, and particularly of such as are lately deceased; of all benefactors who, by their donations or legacies to

this Church, witnessed their zeal for the decency of divine worship and proved their claim to our grateful and charitable remembrance. To

these, O Lord, and to all that rest in Christ, grant, we beseech Thee, a place of refreshment, light, and everlasting peace, through the

same Jesus Christ, Our Lord and Savior. Amen.

However, this Friday we will still offer our FORUM promoting a culture of encounter. Join us for “Quodlibet,”

which is Latin for “whatever you wish”: we will have a panel including professors of philosophy, theology,

political science and literature for a dynamic conversation about whatever you’d like! Happy hour with special

hors d’oeuvres begins at 7:30 P.M. and the freewheeling discussion starts at 8:00 P.M. Bring your inquisitive

friends!

PARISH CHARITIES

“Closeness to the poor, the refugee, the immigrant, the sick, the exploited, the elderly living

alone, prisoners and all God’s other poor, will teach us a different way of resting, one which is

more Christian and generous.” – Pope Francis

Parish Charities On-line Donations

St. Charles provides emergency assistance to parishioners and residents of Arlington County who have been

unable to pay their rent or utility bills. We help approximately 30 people each month with an average of

$5,000. We rely on donations from parishioners to fund our emergency assistance. Please consider donating

online through Faith Direct. Visit our website, click on "Support", "Give", and either Faith Direct link. A one time

or monthly donation will ensure that St. Charles is able to continue providing assistance to those facing financial

hardship.

Food Pantry

Thank you to everyone who has donated to the food pantry. We currently are low on peanut butter, jelly,

cereal, fruit in its own syrup (no added sugar), and pancake mix and syrup. Please purchase these and other

non-perishable food items to help keep our shelves stocked. Each week we give out 60-70 family bags and 30-

40 homeless lunch bags, and so the shelves empty quickly.
