Pastor’s Points of Perspective. Hello my dear brothers and sisters of Saint Christopher’s
Parish Family. Beginning this Sunday evening I will be at the Archdiocese of Detroit’s
Priest Convocation in Boyne. The Archdiocesan Convocation is a biennial gathering of all the priests for
fraternity and formation. As a result of my being away Monday through Friday, there will not be 9 AM daily
Mass October 14 through the 18. Please pray for the priests and bishops of the Archdiocese during this time
(and always) – we could sure use your prayers! Thank you.
It is important to note that (if you have not heard by now) there was an arson fire at Saint Mary’s in Saint Clair
early morning on Tuesday, October 1. The church was broken into, the main altar cloth and the Marian altar
cloth were set on fire, and a crucifix was stolen. The suspect was carrying a skateboard and had a backpack on,
appeared to be male, but was also in disguise. I am writing to you about this incident since a crucifix was stolen
from our altar about a year or so ago, and we have frequently seen skateboarders on our property, especially near
the southeast entrance. Please be on the watch for anything suspicious and report it to the proper authority (me,
or the police, as applicable) as soon as possible. As a reminder, the parish property is private property, and no
one has a right to be on our private property who does not have a legitimate church purpose. My purpose in
writing this to you is to increase your awareness and watchfulness. Thank you.
After this watchful encouragement, we should also all then be aware that our siding on the Church will be
replaced over the next week or so, as well as our (“roof”) windows, so you will see workmen around. I wrote
about having our siding and windows replaced some time ago due to our continuously leaking roof, and now this
work is being done. The replacement of the siding should solve some of the problem with the leakiness, but we
also recently discovered that the roof was not done well when it was replaced less than a decade ago, which is
another contributing factor to our leaky problem. The roof seems to leak only when the wind blows while
raining.
Catechism of the Catholic Church Preface for this weekend’s readings to ponder. “Thanksgiving
characterizes the prayer of the Church which, in celebrating the Eucharist, reveals and becomes more fully what
she is. Indeed, in the work of salvation, Christ sets creation free from sin and death to consecrate it anew and
make it return to the Father, for his glory. The thanksgiving of the members of the Body participates in that of
their Head” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, paragraph 2637).
Fraternally,
Fr. James

Musical Musings. As we continue into October, the Church encourages us
rekindle our devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary, in thanksgiving for, and to
obtain her constant, powerful maternal intercession with her Divine Son, Our
Lord Jesus.
On the Feast of the Holy Rosary this past Monday, Fr. James spoke about the
powerful prayer of the Rosary, and how we need to learn to say it with attention
and devotion, in order to obtain all the graces associated with it. The Hail Mary
is an exalted prayer in praise of our Lady, in praise of the great moment when
God became Man in her womb. At the center of the prayer is the Holy Name of
Jesus, that powerful Name, at the mention of which demons flee, and God’s
children are healed and restored. Surrounding the Holy Name of Jesus in this
beautiful prayer, we can perceive Mary, interceding and constantly appealing to
her Son for mercy on her children. It is a consolation to know that He never says
no to a request from her. With this thought it is easy to throw ourselves in Our
Lady’s arms, using this prayer to build our trust and confidence in her maternal
intercession.
The Ave Maria is one of the most popular texts to which composers write
music. Most sacred music composers have done so. This weekend the choirs
will sing the Hail Mary in Latin by Jacques Arcadelt. Since most of you know
the English version, I’ll put the English and Latin here, side by side. If you have
any desire to learn Latin, I would suggest that learning the Ave Maria is an easy
and wonderful way to start.
Ave Maria,
Gratia Plena,
Dominus Tecum;
Benedicta Tu in muleieribus,
Et benedicuts fructus ventris tui,
Jesus.
Sancta Maria, Mater Dei,
Ora pro nobis, pecatoribus,
Nunc, et in hora mortis nostrae.
Amen.
Hail Mary,
Full of Grace,
The Lord is with thee;
Blessed art thou amongst women,
And blessed is the fruit of thy womb,
Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God,
Pray for us sinners,
Now, and at the hour of our death.
Amen.
Pax Christi,
Deidre Collins, Music Director
