SPIRITUAL REFLECTIONS FROM POPE FRANCIS
ON LENT 2018: FEBRUARY 14 TO MARCH 28
“A TIME TO RETURN TO GOD”
“Lent comes providentially to awaken us… Why must we return to God? Because something is not right within us… and
we need to change and give it a new direction. And that is called needing to convert! Once again Lent reminds us that it
is possible to create something new within ourselves and around us, simply because God is faithful… and… is always
ready to forgive and start afresh. With this filial confidence, let us set out on the journey!
“The first element in our Lenten spiritual journey is prayer…
more intense prayer, more prolonged, more assiduous, more to take on the needs of the brethren…
“The second key of the Lenten journey is fasting… Fasting
involves choosing a sober lifestyle… to attune ourselves to the essential and to sharing… a sign of the trust that we place
in… God’s Providence.
“The third element of the Lenten journey is almsgiving: it points to giving freely, for in almsgiving one gives something
to someone from whom one does not expect to receive anything in return…
“Lent is the time for saying ’no.’ ‘No’ to indifference, thinking that other people’s lives are not my concern… We are called
to abandon… sin and fix our gaze on what is essential… From the heart of the person renewed in the likeness of God comes
good behavior: to speak the truth always… to share all you have with others… not to give in to anger, resentment and
revenge, but to be meek, magnanimous and ready to forgive; not to gossip which ruins the good name of people, but to look
more at the good side of everyone…”
