MOMENTS OF GRACE: SACRAMENTAL REFLECTIONS & INVITATIONS

What is a sacrament? I can hear many of you, in your head or even out loud, remembering that “a sacrament is a visible sign, instituted by Christ, to give grace.” Thank God for the Baltimore Catechism and the knowledge that it has ingrained in so many of you, my brothers and sisters. For me, and my peers and our children, these same truths are taught differently. For each of us, no matter our age or state in life, it is our job to understand the truth taught by our beautiful mother, the Church, and to ask God for the grace to help us live the truth in love. I propose that we spend these weeks of summer Ordinary time on a quick review of the seven sacraments and their power in our lives. The catechism in use today says it this way: “The sacraments are efficacious signs of grace, instituted by Christ and entrusted to the Church, by which divine life is dispensed to us. The visible rites by which the sacraments are celebrated signify and make present the graces proper to each sacrament. They bear fruit in those who receive them with the required dispositions.” (CCC 1131). You can search the entire Catechism of the Catholic Church online at http://www.vatican.va or borrow a copy from our parish library. We know that the sacraments are from Christ, who wants us to share in his divine life in real and powerful ways!

RESOURCE OF THE WEEK:

The “YouCat” is a great way to share the truths of the faith with younger Catholics. It combines essential teaches with photos, cartoons and quotes from saints. Consider this resource as a graduation or confirmation gift. Available through your favorite bookseller or online or check one out
