What does it mean to be salt and light? If we listen carefully to Jesus’ words, we gain some direction. To be salt means to bring taste, zest and joy to life. We are asked to liven things up a bit by allowing the joy, or our faith, to spill over into the lives of others. Only a sincere and deep relationship with God can freshen up humanity and set it on proper course. To be light means that our faith must translate into action so that we can be Christ for others and extend the same arm of mercy and compassion that Christ did. Our acts of piety, then, cannot be directed solely at ourselves. Prayer is never about self-benefit, but must always be directed toward union with God, deepening our relationships with one another and learning how to be effective stewards of the beautiful universe God has entrusted to our care. The Master gives us wise direction in terms of how we can best become the salt and light he desires. Listen carefully to the Beatitudes. Think about the oppression
and alienation that exists in our world; the violence and prejudice, the anger and the hatred, the fear and the shame. All of these things require action. The poor need food, housing and clothes. Hatred must be replaced by love. Retaliation and violence by forgiveness. Our thoughts and speech can become more like Christ. We can change and continue to change. Blessed John Henry Cardinal Newman said,
“To live is to change and to be perfect is to have changed often.” But it doesn’t end with just offering the bandages needed to heal wounds. It must go deeper. We must ask ourselves what has happened that we have found ourselves in this place with these wounds and divisions. What are their causes? Together we must address these systemic problems, politically and spiritually and face the truth. Only then will we truly be salt and light. But then again, we may not like what the light shows us.

This Sunday, February 9, marks the annual observance of WORLD MARRIAGE DAY
which is always celebrated on the second Sunday in February. The first WMD
celebration was held in 1983. The purpose of World Marriage Day is to honor husband and wife as the foundation of the family which is the basic unit of society. On this day, people celebrate the beauty of the husband and wife’s faithfulness, joy and sacrifice in daily married life. The theme for the day is “Love One Another”. It is the commandment given to us by Jesus Christ in John 15:12.
FEASTDAY OF OUR LADY OF LOURDES — February 11 Each year, over 2 million people visit the mountainous country of southeastern France to Lourdes. They come seeking cures, believing and praying—recalling the lady dressed in white with a blue sash, yellow roses at her feet and a Rosary on her arm—the Blessed Virgin Mary. On February 11, 1858, Mary appeared to 14-year-old Bernadette Soubirous. This was the first of 18 visits, many of them with 20,000 people present. When Bernadette asked the Lady’s identity, she replied, “I am the Immaculate Conception.” Her message was a request for prayer and penance. On February 28, 1858, the Lady told Bernadette to dig in the dirt and drink of the stream. Bernadette began to dig and after several attempts, she was able to find the water to drink. The water continued to flow from where she had dug with her hands until it was producing over 32,000 gallons of water a day—as it still does. We may never travel to Lourdes, but we can always know that we have a Mother to help us and lead us to her Son, Jesus.
COLD AND FLU SEASON PRECAUTIONS Now that the cold and flu season is upon us, out of concern, please do not feel obligated to drink from the cup at Holy Communion or shake hands at the Sign of Peace. A friendly wave, nod, or greeting is acceptable.

Page 6
St. Clare of Assisi, St. Elizabeth of Hungary, Holy Spirit & St. Thomas à Becket Churches We’re excited to share the list of approved names we received from Bishop Zubik! Please read the rationale for each of these names and prayerfully consider which name you think is most relevant for our new parish. The next step in the process is to select your name choice. You can submit it via paper, or on our website. The deadline for submissions is February 23. SEE PAGE 7 FOR A SUBMISSION FORM.
Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos served as a pastor at St. Philomena Parish in
Pittsburgh. Additionally, he celebrated Mass at the location of the former Saint Peter Church in the Monongahela Valley. In light of his connection to this city, it appears fitting that there be a parish with his name in the diocese. Furthermore, his missionary zeal provides a model for the effective evangelization we hope to carry out through the Church Alive process.
The Sacred Heart is a symbol of God’s boundless love for humanity. The flames emitting from the heart
symbolize the transformative power of God’s love. This transformative love is what we will need as we move forward as a unified parish. We hope to be transformed into a single community of faith aflame with the fire of divine charity . God’s all-encompassing love should compel us to extend our hearts in love following the example of Christ.
Saint Charles Borromeo is the patron saint of bishops, cardinals, seminarians, and spiritual leaders.
During these difficult times for the Catholic church, and our grouping in particular, we should remind all Catholics that our clergy need help. By naming our grouping after Borromeo, we would both honor him and ask for his help in guiding and protecting our clergy, especially our seminarians.
Transfiguration is a change in form or appearance to a more beautiful, spiritual state. The physical terrain and
sites of four former parishes have been "refigured" into one holy mystery of Christ's Transfiguration. The purpose of the Transfiguration was to encourage and strengthen the Apostles who were discouraged by their Master's prediction of His own Passion and Death. The Apostles came to understand that His work of redemption encompassed the cross and glory - we shall be glorified with Him only if we first suffer with Him.
Saint Monica is the patron saint of conversion and during her life, she displayed the power of intercessory prayer
for lost souls. It was through her intercession that her son Augustine came back into the fold. Many people in this area have children or grandchildren who no longer practice the Faith and there are countless others who have had no exposure to the Faith. We ought to imitate the example of Saint Monica in constantly praying for the souls of those who are far away from the Church.

*Triumph of the Holy Cross and Exaltation of the Holy Cross share the same rationale, and are both options for our new parish name.
As shown in the picture, the four churches in our grouping can be connected in the form of a Cross. The cross reminds Christians that there is no trial we can face which God does not also face with us. Christ bears all of our crosses with us and never abandons His people in their need. In our evangelization, we ought to “proclaim Christ crucified.” As a new parish, we are called to witness the love of God which finds its highest expression in Christ crucified. Also intriguing to note: the angle of the cross appears to be the angle that Jesus carried His cross. You can almost envision Him bearing the cross on the road to Calvary.

Mardi Gras — Did you know? Mardi Gras is a time to get ready for Lent. The season of Mardi Gras or Carnival, is derived from the Latin
Carne vale, or “farewell to flesh” which would become the theme of Lent. MARDI GRAS is a season that has taken on some debauchery, but actually was meant to be metaphoric for the Christian life. The carnival season was to be light-hearted and a time where we begin to reflect on those matters of the “flesh”. We may be self-centered and perhaps held captive by our choices or behaviors, and not always free to love. This is where we begin to figure out our fast, or our giving up and doing away with certain behaviors with the end result in mind. Hopefully by Easter, we will be a new creation, “overflowing with an abundance of charity and love requiring outward expression” resulting from the positive results of “giving up” behaviors. Turning away from sin to follow the Gospel frees us to love more and be a better imitator of Christ. A few questions to ask yourself during Mardi Gras? (This is why we wear the masks-symbolic of the things that we hide from ourselves about ourselves.) —How serious am I about my spiritual life? —Do I pray regularly, do I attend mass? Celebrate the sacraments? —Do I do unnecessary “work” on Sunday. Or do I dedicate the day and my time to spending it with my family sharing the fruits of my love from God. —Do I love God and His church, share my gratitude and offer Thanksgiving? —Am I generous with my time? Am I of service to others, my spouse, my family, friends, co-workers and most importantly to God? Or do I spend an enormous amount of time in front of some electronic device? —Are you content with mediocrity? Or are you striving to be the best, utilizing the gifts and talents God has given to you? Do you hold back on giving your best because you fear people will expect more of you? Or that you will fail? These are just a few thoughts to ponder before our journey of Lent begins.

SECOND GRADE’S GOOGLE DRAWING The Second Grade students are having an enjoyable time with the drawing tools on their chrome books. The drawing tools allow them to create and manipulate lines, shapes, colors, text and more, to add an artistic touch to a document. The assignment they were given was to create their face using the drawing tools. The children made pictures using basic shapes. They used squares, circles, triangles, rectangles, hexagons and lines. Once they made their face, they colored the shapes using the paint box tool. When they finished, they used the text box tool to write their name on the picture they drew. The pictures were amazing and funny at the same time.
Remember in your prayers all who have died, especially Teresa Willoughby. May she rest in peace with God in heaven.

Also, in order to keep our census up to date, if you have any changes to your information (i.e., name, address, members of household, etc.) please call the parish office at 412-882-8744, or you may email updates to: [email protected].
