Dear Parents & Friends of St Clare’s

Thanks to all the parents and friends of St Clare’s who have attended the many community

gatherings over the past 10 days. The final school mass, led by Fr Dennis from Forster, was a

wonderful gathering featuring great musicianship and participation from our student leaders.

The Year 10 Final Assembly was well attended by parents and other family members. It was

great that the Year 10 former Student Coordinator from Year 7 to 9, John Chapman, was able to

attend and see ‘his students’ through to the senior years of schooling. Due to the distribution of

Christmas hampers, the Year 10 gathering was held in the Senior Quad. Again, the music was

first class and the acknowledgement of student achievement and announcement of the House

Leaders for 2018 was well received. Thanks to Donna Smith, Year 10 Student Coordinator and

to the Year 10 team who helped organise their Ceremony.

The community collection for St Vincent de Paul Christmas hampers was a great success.

Deacon Vince Ryan, in his role as St Vincent

de Paul Regional President – Manning Region,

coordinated the activities of the local Catholic

Community to produce approximately 200

washing basket size hampers for local families

in need. The generosity of our students and

their families was a significant factor in the

success of the charitable collection and will do

much to help people feel part of the

community over the Christmas period.

Work on the grounds continues. The most significant event over the next two weeks will be the

demolition of Rooms 1, 2 & 3 (the area known as the Learning Hub) and the concrete pour of

the new basketball courts.

Students who attended the National

Catholic Youth Festival reported their

experiences to the school at the Annual

Awards Ceremony held on Friday, 15

December. My thanks to the Chancery

Office and the CSO for their support of our

young people on their faith journey.

My thanks to Donna Smith and the Year 10 team for

their organisation of the Year 10 social. It was great

to see our young people in formal dress enjoying

each other’s company for the last time as a group in

2017. The evening was a great follow-up to the

group’s academic assembly.

Zebulen Everingham, Cayley Cribb, Holly Twemlow & Thomas Relf

Earlier in the week, I had the pleasure of attending a performance evening showcasing the skills

of St Clare’s musicians. It was a wonderful show. I was particularly struck by the

collaborative nature of the group, students from all year levels sharing their skills in various

combinations and styles of music. My thanks to music teacher Carmel Brown our music

students and the group of parents who attended the evening.

Departing Staff

As you are aware six of our staff members are leaving St Clare’s: Miss Smith, Mr Evans,

Mrs Eady, Ms Rowsell, Mr Constantine and Mr Clacherty.

We had a special farewell assembly last Wednesday and would like to acknowledge the gifts

each one has brought to St Clare’s and wish them every happiness in their future endeavours.

Three staff members are taking leave in 2018, Mrs Gale, Mr Bellanto and Mr Holland. We

wish them well. Special thanks go to Mrs Dunn for her years of service job sharing with Mr

Bellanto, Mrs Dunn will continue working at St Clare’s.

Mr Knight and Mr Donovan who have been on yearly contracts have brought real

commitment, enthusiasm and generosity to the school during their time here. We wish them

every happiness as they move on in their journey.

Next year all our students will be expected to wear a school hat

when they are outside on school grounds. Students will have a

choice of two hats, either a wide brimmed hat or a bucket hat.

Both are available from our uniform suppliers, Workwise

Clothing.

Finally, I would like to thank parents for their support of the school and their contribution to the

community life of St Clare’s. I hope you and your family have a wonderful summer break and

that your Christmas and New Year is a happy and holy time as you and your friends gather to

recharge your batteries and enjoy the company of those you love.

God Bless

MEDIA RELEASE

ST CLARE’S HIGH SCHOOL – HSC RESULTS – 2017

Principal’s Comment:

“Congratulations to our HSC class of 2017 on their excellent results which are a fitting

reflection of their efforts and dedication to their studies. I particularly want to thank our staff

for their excellent teaching and our parents for the fine support that they have given their sons

and daughters and the school over the past six years. We are proud of our students, staff and

the St Clare’s tradition of achievement in the HSC.”

The 2017 HSC Examination results have, again, been very rewarding for St Clare’s High

School students. For St Clare’s, this year saw the highest number of students (106) to sit the

HSC; the highest number of indigenous student graduates; the highest number of students with

disabilities to graduate, and the highest number of apprenticeships offered.

The cohort was rewarded with 158 Band 5 and Band 6 grades with outstanding results in

English, Mathematics, Physics, Food Technology, Industrial Technology and Music.

Eliza Williamson received an offer of E12 early entry program for Sydney University.

In Creative and Performing Arts (CAPA), Sarah Early (Drama), and Nirian Boelling-

McDougall (Music) were nominated for OnSTAGE and Encore, the performance extravaganzas

of the best HSC practical presentations from across the state.

For the 106 students in the Class of 2017, there were over 250 early entry offers to university.

Most of the students who wish to attend university have decided to accept one of their offers.

According to the limited contact the school has had with students today, the student who is our

2017 Dux is Sophie Wood with an Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank of 94.90. She is

hoping to study Physiotherapy at Newcastle University.

CHAPLAINCY/PASTORAL CARE: A reminder to all that the school has a Chaplain.

Please feel free to contact our Chaplain, Deacon Vince Ryan, through the school office if he

can be of assistance to you or any member of our whole school community.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF DONATIONS TO THE HAMPER APPEAL: The Hamper

Appeal has now finished. I would like to thank everyone for your amazing donations. Your

generosity was fantastic and was a major contribution to our target of 180 hampers. This target

was achieved comfortably and now many families in need in our area will benefit from your

generosity.

What this all means is that not only do families get a wonderful hamper, but it also shows them

that we are a community that cares. This gives them much needed hope and encouragement. It

also says a huge amount about us a community caring for our community – the benefits are

huge.

Again thank you! Deacon Vince Ryan

MANNING GREAT LAKES TECHNOLOGY AWARDS: Congratulations to all the

students who entered their TAS projects in the annual Manning Great Lakes Technology

Awards, 2017. The display was on show at the Manning Regional Art Gallery and showcased

local schools. St Clare's was very well represented in all of the major awards and is a

wonderful reflection of the students’ efforts and the efforts of the TAS faculty teaching staff.

Winners were awarded trophies and cash prizes, donated by the many local businesses that

supported the event last Sunday at the Gallery to the cheers of families and supporting

businesses.

Major HSC Work Awards were collected by Sarah Chalmers, Demi Fox, Nirian Boelling-

McDougall and Siena Hindmarsh.

Matthew Parvin, Karla Berg picked up major prizes for their works as well as juniors, Aston

Purdon, Hayley Patel, Sophie Robinson and Elijah Simpson.

All students should be exceptionally proud of their efforts and of the significant recognition that

they have received. I extend my best wishes to all students, staff and parents that supported the

event as it really is a showcase that promotes our achievements to the wider community. St

Clare's is seen with great respect in the community and that tradition continues to grow. I give

my thanks to all families and staff and extend my best wishes to you all for Christmas.

PRAYER POINT: THIRD SUNDAY OF ADVENT - 17 DECEMBER

“A reading from first letter of St Paul to the Thessalonians

Be happy at all times; pray constantly; and for all things give thanks to God, because this is

what God expects you to do in Christ Jesus.

Never try to suppress the Spirit or treat the gift of prophecy with contempt; think before you

do anything - hold on to what is good and avoid every form of evil.

May the God of peace make you perfect and holy; and may you all be kept safe and

blameless, spirit, soul and body, for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. God has called you

and he will not fail you.

The word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.”

Here it is. Here is the recipe for our lives. How simple it is to follow God in Jesus Christ by the

Holy Spirit.

And again….God has called you and will not fail you.

What else is there to say?

Have a peaceful, joy-filled Christmas and may we all marvel at the vulnerability of our God

who became human, just as we are.

Ministry Coordinator

MONDAY, 25 DECEMBER

St Clare’s End of 2017 Mass of Thanksgiving

We begin by acknowledging the traditional custodians, our first people, the Biripi

people, on whose land we stand, invited and grateful. We honour their leaders, past

and present.

My name is Father Dennis Rochford, Missionary of the Sacred Heart.

I am delighted to celebrate the completion of one more year in your education and, for

some, graduation and new challenges.

On behalf of Fathers, George and James (from Taree) and Fr Greg Barker

(Forster/Tuncurry), I join in wishing you all well for the past year and happy Christmas

holidays.

The celebration of the Eucharist, the Mass, is the gathering of a community and within

that community, through the bread and wine, we encounter each other ‘together’, ‘in

unity’; and we encounter Jesus Christ in the sacrament of His Body and Blood.

Being together in Christ is what your school motto states: “Omnia pro Christo” All for

Christ OR All together with/in Christ.

Today’s Gospel has Jesus teaching before he heals a crippled man.

Teaching can be a powerful source of life; it empowers us for more than gaining jobs and

making money; it makes life interesting and turns the dull and ordinary into something

lively and joyful.

Of course, not all teaching is magic and not every subject area is equally absorbing.

There are different styles and interests for each one of us.

But we not objects of teaching but participators in learning. And our best teachers are

also excellent learners.

Bringing a class to life is a shared responsibility just as Jesus, who teaches the learned

people of his time, the Pharisees and Doctors of His faith, brings them in a deeper

understanding of their shared faith.

This was to include forgiveness – your sins are forgiven – and healing, take up your mat,

get up and walk. This action of Jesus accords so deeply with the words of St Mary

MacKillop, St Clare’s inspiring founder, who said, “Never see a need without doing

something about it.”

But the key to this gospel is faith. And faith is at the heart of St Clare’s mission to your

education.

This faith is our faith in Jesus Christ. That is, faith is in a person not rules and

regulations; buildings and ceremonies.

Christian Faith is faith in a person, Jesus Christ, as the only one in whom life, love and

happiness can be found in its fullness.

I say in its fullness, because the partner of your dreams; a successful education and

satisfying employment, will bring you life too but not too the full. Only Jesus Christ, and

our faith in Him, will bring external life.

I was a teacher for many years, both in Australia and overseas, and I recommend it as both a

profession demanding excellence and a service to foster the values and faith of young

people.

In one of my senior classes I had two students, Nick and Julie. They were very much in

love.

But Nick was not religious and Julie was a devoted Catholic girl.

Because they were so close, you might expect that Julie would try to explain to Nick the

reasons for her faith, even in everyday humanitarian ways, like, care, concern, justice and

human rights.

But this never happens. On the contrary, Julie’s favourite text is scripture, the Bible, not

soup kitchens and social justice. (Although she is very generous and giving).

They are very much in love with each other but she does not want to sleep with him. As

a believer she has problems with that.

After a terrible road accident leaves his brother a cripple, Nick goes off to a retreat, all by

himself and battles with his lack of faith in silence.

But Christianity does not provide an answer for him. He asks all kinds of questions but

from outside the community of the Church, outside the ‘togetherness’ of Eucharist and

Church.

Nick has become secular, living completely for what is in the world. The Church is in

the past and the past means nothing to him.

Julie, on the other hand, is deeply grounded in her tradition, she lives and prays from

within the community and her strength and foundation is the person of Jesus Christ.

I tell that story because that is all faith can be today. A contrast and challenge to a society

and culture that no longer wants to know the life of faith. (It is not against faith, worse, it is

indifferent, i.e. it does not care).

As you complete 2017 you will know your grades, your friends and your holiday plans.

But will you also have a reading on your faith?

If faith and our church rate poorly, like the crippled man, it is not because Jesus Christ

has failed. It is because our witness and manner of life have failed to convince.

Julie failed to convince too but her love and devotion did not fail Nick. She stood by him

and so should we, the Church, we are the constant reminder of the “something more” to

life.

That is the mission of your Catholic school too. It is the work of Jesus Christ who

teaches, forgives and brings healing.

May God bless you and keep you safe over a happy Christmas holidays.

Our Redeemer Is Your Ancient Name

Every year at the beginning of Advent there is a procession with carols at King’s College

Chapel, Cambridge, England. The famous chapel was founded by King Henry VI in 1441 and

among its many glories is the fan-vaulted roof described by the poet William Wordsworth as

“self-poised, and scooped into ten thousand cells, where light and shape repose, where music

dwells lingering – and wandering on as loth to die”.

The music that is heard in the chapel on this day begins with the gentle sound of the organ and

then, in the distance, the voices of the choristers intoning the responsory which begins, “I look

from afar: and lo, I see the power of God coming, and a cloud covering the whole earth”. As the

procession moves from the west door the choristers sing, “Come, thou Redeemer of the Earth”,

a hymn written by St Ambrose in the fourth century. It continues, “Come, testify thy virgin

birth: All lands admire, all times applaud! Such is the birth that fits a God.” The words and the

music are haunting and sublime. They send a tingle from your head to your toes. Advent is here

again!

The season of Advent has been celebrated in the Church probably since the fourth century. The

word “advent” comes from the Latin adventus, a word used in ancient times to describe the

arrival or presence of a king who had come to visit a part of his kingdom. The Church adopted

this word as fitting for the season that has now begun.

If we do not have Wordsworth’s unique vision or eloquence, as Christians we do have the gift

of faith; and this enables us to see beyond this world. Let us renew our faith this Advent so that

our eyes may see and our ears may hear the wondrous truth that we are “born for

immortality”. In the season’s light and shade, words and music, holly and ivy, candles and

wreaths of greenery, may we see and hear the joyful proclamation of the coming of our

Redeemer. Let us be ready to meet him so that, whatever our weaknesses. strengths, hopes,

fears, joys, or disappointments, when at last our Redeemer comes to us, our eyes shall be fully

opened and we shall recognise the One who has loved us from all eternity.

In the darkened sky that hangs over humanity, hope seems a futile dream. But we have hope as

we journey. Hope stirs in the resolution to celebrate the joys of each day. Hope stirs as we

assert our confidence in the Christian community. Hope comes clear when we pass through the

testing times, battered but unbroken. Our hope finds a focus in the journey of a young couple

to Bethlehem 2000 years ago – a journey in which we join.
