Page 4 St. Colman, St. John Fisher and St. Jude the Apostle
In 2010 Bishop Zubik gave me one of the
best gifts I have ever received. He allowed me to
take six weeks off from parish ministry and make
a 30-day silent retreat. I followed the Spiritual
Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola at the Eastern
Point Jesuit Retreat House in Gloucester,
Massachusetts.
Every retreatant had a director. Mine was
a wise older Jesuit priest, Ken Hughes. We met
every day for 30-45 minutes, as he guided me
through the exercises.
At our first meeting Ken encouraged me to
take it easy the first few days, and adapt to the
gentle pace of praying several times a day without
any ministerial responsibilities. He suggested
that Revelation 3:20 be the first Scripture
passage I reflect on. “Behold, I stand at the door
and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens
the door, then I will enter his house and dine with
him, and he with me.”
This biblical verse was new to me. The “I”
in the verse is Jesus Christ. Jesus wanted to
enter my house, my life, my heart. Was I willing
to open the door and let him in? Yes!
Thus began a superlative-beyond-words
spiritual journey for me, as I tried to open the
door wider and wider to Christ on retreat. Every
day since then I attempt to push the door open a
little more.
Recently I read the short sermon Buenos
Ares Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio gave to 150
Cardinals at the Vatican after the shocking
resignation of Pope Benedict XVI in 2013. In that
speech Bergoglio referenced this very passage.
He said, “Obviously the text refers to Jesus
knocking from the outside in order to enter. But
I think about the times in which Jesus knocks
from within so that we let him out. The self-
referential Church seeks to keep Jesus Christ
within herself and she does not let him out.”
Four days after Bergoglio gave that
sermon those same Cardinals elected him the
266
th
bishop of Rome, Pope Francis.
As we begin the journey of making two
former groupings of parishes into one, and
ultimately into one new parish community, let me
suggest that it is good for us to reflect on this
Scripture passage.
On the one hand each of us is on a unique
spiritual journey “to learn Jesus, to love Jesus,
and to live Jesus” (in the words of the prayer for
On Mission for the Church Alive). Each
one of us has to open our homes, our lives, our
hearts, to meet Jesus. We do this by praying, by
reading the Bible, especially the Gospels, by
receiving him in the sacraments of Holy
Communion and Confession, and by loving the
poor as he did (see Matthew 25:31-45).
On the other hand each of us, and our
parishes, cannot keep Jesus cooped up in our
church buildings, organizations or activities. We
have to take the Jesus we meet at our doorway
into the streets, roads and by-ways of our world.
Jesus met a wide variety of people in his native
region of Galilee and on the streets of Jericho and
Jerusalem (for example, a man born blind, a
widow who lost her only son, a tax collector, a
woman afflicted with hemorrhages, the
fishermen who became his apostles). The stories
of how he encountered these folks are the stories
of our Gospels, and stories of salvation.
We too meet lots of people in our travels.
Do we bring Jesus to them, by our smile or kind
word, by our gentleness and forgiveness? Do we
the church, the people of God, go out of our way
to meet folks who live “on the wrong side of the
tracks,” who have “nuthin’ but trouble” in their
lives, who are hurting in body or mind or soul—
and need to experience the mercy of Jesus in how
we treat them? Who need us to be the hands and
heart of Jesus Christ extended to them? Pope
Francis calls this “going to the peripheries.” The
Catholic Church calls this evangelization.

A Family Blessing
Lord of all,
Bless our families.
Be they formed by blood or by
circumstance,
Make them holy.
May we find you
in our relationships.
in our marriages, in our fami-
lies,
in our households, in our
communities,
In our global humanity.
May we look across
all that divides us
And see family,
And embrace as a family does.
And love as a family ought to.
For where two or three gather
in your name,
There are you.
Amen.

Capuchin Cruise: Capuchin Cruises presents
France: Paris to Normandy, aboard a Vantage River
Cruise, held September 10-25, 2019. Journey high-
lights include: wreath-laying ceremony at the
American Cemetery in Normandy; excursion to
Giverny to visit the famous gardens cultivated by
Impressionist painter Claude Monet; and walking
tour of Honfleur, the historic fishing port where
many Impressionist painters found inspiration, all
while traveling in style on the 5-star River Venture.
We will also explore the historic ruins of Richard

Sarah Swafford to Speak: Men and women today are
faced with a constant assault on their emotions. Whether
from the media or the environment around them, relation-
ships are especially under attack. In her talk,
“Relationships: It's Complicated,” national Catholic
speaker and author Sarah Swafford targets this battle
within. She sets forth a vision for virtue in the twenty-first
century, one that focuses on beginning with the end in
mind, building what will last, and staying off the
“Emoticoaster.” The talk will be held on September 17 at
Ss. John and Paul Church. No cost. Courtesy registration
