  • THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD Today the Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Epiphany. "The Lord and ruler is coming; kingship is his, and government and power." With these words the Church proclaims that today's feast brings to a perfect fulfillment all the purposes of Advent. Epiphany, therefore, marks the liturgical zenith of the Advent-Christmas season. — Pius Parsch Epiphany means manifestation. What the Church celebrates today is the manifestation of our Lord to the whole world; after being made known to the shepherds of Bethlehem He is revealed to the Magi who have come from the East to adore Him. Christian tradition has ever seen in the Magi the first fruits of the Gentiles; they lead in their wake all the peoples of the earth, and thus the Epiphany is an affirmation of universal salvation. St. Leo brings out this point admirably in a sermon, in which he shows in the adoration of the Magi the beginnings of Christian faith, the time when the great mass of the unbelievers sets off to follow the star which summons it to seek its Savior.

A Family Activity - Chalk The Door For the Epiphany, many traditions revolve around putting a chalk equation on the door of your house. The equation is written to be the first two digits of the year, followed by the initials C, M, and B, followed by the last two digits of the year. Each portion is split by plus signs. For this year, the equation would be written as “20 + C + M + B + 21.” The chalking holds two meanings. The C, M, and B, refer to the traditional names of the Magi: Caspar, Melchior, and Balthasar. The letters also stand for the Latin phrase “Christus mansionem benedicat” which means “May Christ bless the house.” The plus signs represent the cross, and the 20 and 21 simply refer to the year.

HAPPY NEW YEAR! On behalf of the priests, religious sisters, deacons, and parish staff of St. Columba, we wish all our beloved parishioners a very peaceful and healthy New Year. May we see much progress in the coming months putting an end to this pandemic. God bless you and your families!

We all know The Catholic University as a truly unique institution of higher learning. is the only one founded by the United States bishops back in1887, and chartered by the Vatican. In every way, the university belongs to each of us no matter where we live. And so, it is incumbent upon us to help with the education of future leaders of our Church and nation. Your contributions help to underwrite the university's financial aid office so that students, young and old from across the country will have access to quality academic and spiritual programs. Just within the past year, several thousand students, including those from our archdiocese, who otherwise would not have been able to attend CUA, were given an opportunity to do so, thanks in large part to your generosity.

Also, through the Catholic Communications Campaign, the conference of bishops is able to serve all the dioceses of our nation by providing educational and spiritual programs for radio and television. You should know that one half of your giving remains here in the archdiocese to assist with the ongoing and planned efforts of our communications and technology office.

My gratitude for your generous contribution to these two important collections, and my prayerful best wishes for a holy, healthy and happy new year.

+ Timothy Michael Cardinal Dolan Archbishop of New York
