HUMAN LIFE AND DIGNITYFor the Church, there is no distinction between defending human life and promoting the dignity of the human person. Pope Benedict XVI writes in Caritas in Veritate that “The Church forcefully maintains this link between life ethics and social ethics, fully aware that ‘a society lacks solid foundations when, on the one hand, it asserts values such as the dignity of the person, justice and peace, but then, on the other hand, radically acts to the contrary by allowing or tolerating a variety of ways in which human life is devalued and violated, especially where it is weak or marginalized.’” (no. 15). As a gift from God, every human life is sacred from conception to natural death. The life and dignity of every person must be respected and protected at every stage and in every condition. The right to life is the first and most fundamental principle of human rights that leads Catholics to actively work for a world of greater respect for human life and greater commitment to justice and peace.

CLINTON COUNTY RIGHT TO LIFEThank you, St. Columbkille for those who were able to contribute to the Clinton County Right to Life Signature Ad that appeared in the January 19th edition of the Wilmington News Journal. The ad listed churches, businesses and individuals who take a stand for Life in Clinton County. It is not too late to help join the vital efforts of the Clinton County Right to Life. Membership dues for 2018 are only $10.00 and help us to take a stand for life. We welcome you to get personally involved to by attending our meetings on the last Monday of each month, except May and December, at 6:00 PM at the Wilmington Public Library, 268 N South Street, Wilmington, OH 45177. BLESSING OF THE THROATSSt. Blaise served as Bishop of Sebastea, in Armenia, and was a visible witness of the Gospel, which eventually led to his martyrdom during the persecutions of Diocletian. His feast day is commemorated with the blessing of throats because of the legend that he cured a young boy choking on a fish bone. The blessing of

the throats will be offered during Masses the weekend of February 2/3, 2019.

“Don’t be so judgmental!” “Why are Christians so intolerant?” “Why can’t we just coexist?” In an age in which preference has replaced morality, many people find it difficult to speak the truth, afraid of the reactions they will receive if they say something is right or wrong. Using engaging stories and personal experience, Edward Sri helps us understand the classical view of morality and equips us to engage relativism, appealing to both the head and the heart. Learn how Catholic morality is all about love, why making a judgment is not judging a person’s soul, and why, in the words of Pope Francis, “relativism wounds people.” Questions? FEASTS CELEBRATED THIS WEEKJanuary 20 – Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

Gospel Reading: John 2:1-11Background on the Gospel Reading: The sign Jesus performs at the wedding feast is celebrated as an epiphany or a manifestation of Jesus’ divinity. Yet awareness of Jesus’ impending passion and death is ever present in John’s Gospel. Even in this report of Jesus’ first sign, the language used anticipates Jesus’ passion. When Jesus says to his mother that his hour has not yet come, he protests her wishes in language that John will use again when reporting Jesus’ Last Supper with his disciples. When introducing the story of Jesus washing his disciples’ feet, John writes that Jesus knew that his hour had come. In John’s Gospel, Jesus is very much in command and aware of all that is to happen to him. Here, as elsewhere in John’s Gospel, Mary is not mentioned by name, but is referred to instead as the mother of Jesus. Mary is influential in Jesus’ first sign. She will also be present at his Crucifixion, a witness to the final manifestation of his divinity.John’s Gospel describes seven signs that indicate Jesus’ identity to his disciples. John never speaks of these signs as miracles because their importance is not in the deed that Jesus performs but in what these deeds indicate about Jesus’ identity. Here, as when John describes the other signs, the disciples are said to begin to believe, but no mention is made as to whether the other wedding guests are even aware of what has happened.

January 22 – Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn ChildrenThe over 56 million abortions since the 1973 decisions of Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton reflect with heartbreaking magnitude what Pope Francis means by a “throwaway culture.” However, we have great trust in God’s providence. We are reminded time and again in Scripture to seek the Lord’s help, and as people of faith, we believe that our prayers are heard.

January 23 – St. Marianne Cope, VirginSt. Marianne Cope was an immigrant from Germany. As a Sister of the St. Francis in Syracuse, New York, she founded the first two Catholic hospitals in central New York. In 1883, she went to Hawaii to care for those suffering from leprosy (Hansen’s Disease). She died on August 9, 1919 and canonized in 2012 by Pope Benedict XVI.

January 23 – St. Vincent, Deacon & MartyrSt. Vincent, one of the greatest deacons of the Church, suffered martyrdom in Valencia in the persecution under Diocletian. He was born in Huesca, Spain.

January 24 – St. Francis de Sales, Bishop & Doctor of the ChurchHis ardent love of God and souls, his great kindliness, rare wisdom and sure teaching made St. Francis exceptionally influential in bringing about conversions and in guiding souls in the spiritual life. He won back to the faith more than 70,000 souls, thus restoring to the Church a great part of the Chablis. He was St. Jane de Chantal’s spiritual director, and with her founded the Order of the Visitation. He is the author of Treatise on the Love of God and Introduction to the Devout Life. St. Francis died at Lyons in 1622.

January 25 – The Conversion of St. Paul the ApostleSt. Paul, named Saul at his circumcision, a Jew of the tribe of Benjamin, was born at Tarsus, the capitol of Cilicia. He was a Roman citizen. He was brought up as a strict Jew, and later became a violent persecutor of the Christians. While on his way to Damascus to make new arrests of Christians, he was suddenly converted by a miraculous apparition of Our Lord. From a fierce persecutor he became the great Apostle of the Gentiles. He made three missionary journeys which brought him to the great centers of Asia Minor and southern Europe, and made many converts. Fourteen of his Epistles are found in the New Testament. He was beheaded in Rome in 66, and his body is kept in the Basilica of St. Paul near the Ostian Way.

The St. Martin District Council, Society of St. Vincent De Paul, Inc. (SMDC-SVDP), encompassing Adams, Brown, Clermont, Clinton, Highland and Warren Counties, is seeking CORPORATE SPONSORS to help fund our annual charity event, the “Run For The Poor” 5K run and health walk, to be held Saturday morning June 8, 2019 in Miami Township, Clermont County, Ohio. The 2019 RFTP will mark the 27th

consecutive holding of this charity event. We understand the many requests that businesses receive from charitable organizations, but we also know that businesses benefit from the good will received by publicly supporting a well-respected charity like the St. Vincent De Paul Society. We ask that you please consider assisting a quiet helper in your local region, whose members touch the lives of those in need every day.All the nearly 400 members of SMDC-SVDP are unpaid volunteers. We are willing to be hands, heart and feet to help your neighbors, if you are willing to contribute a sponsorship to help us help the poor. Our Run for the Poor registration flyers, printed with the logos of our major sponsors, will be distributed in parishes throughout the entire Cincinnati Archdiocese, and are mailed to approximately 700 homes of past Run for the Poor participants. Please contact Kathy Eversman at 937-685-3013 or email: [email protected], for more information about St. Vincent De Paul and becoming a Corporate Sponsor of our 2019 Run for the Poor.

On January 22nd, our nation will mark the 43rd anniversary of Roe v. Wade, and Doe v. Bolton, the Supreme Court decisions that made abortion legal throughout pregnancy in every state and territory of our nation. Since those tragic decisions, more than 56 million children’s lives have been lost to abortion, and many suffer that loss – often in silence. 9 Days for Life is a multi-faceted Novena for the respect and protection of every human life. Each day, a different intention is accompanied by a short reflection, suggested actions, and related information. Join thousands of Catholics across the country coming together in this digital platform of prayer and action for a “culture of life” from Monday, January 14th-Tuesday, January 22nd!Visit 9daysforlife.com to join several different ways:• View the Novena online, or print it out• By Using the Free Mobile App – available on App Store or Google

WORD OF LIFESecond Sunday in Ordinary Time – January 20th

For all women with difficult pregnancies: Through the intercession of Our Lady, may they be lovingly supported in welcoming the mystery of life within them. We pray to the Lord:

Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children – January 22nd

For the legal protection of unborn children and for loving support for mothers before and after birth. We pray to the Lord:

“We are created to walk with and support one another; we don’t need to fear reaching out in love. Help your friend experience the strength of God’s message that resounds throughout time: ‘Do not fear: I am with you’ (Isaiah 41:10).”

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE PRO-LIFE?BEING PRO LIFE – Each month an important respect life topic is covered in an engaging interview with someone personally affected by the issue. You can find each Being Pro-Life column in The Catholic Telegraph, but to watch the video or listen to the podcast you need to go online. Past topics are still available to watch on abortion, assisted suicide and undocumented immigrants. This month’s topic is post-abortion ministry. It features the story of just one of many women in our communities suffering from the guilt and shame of a past abortion, and how we can all support their healing journeys back to Christ and His Church.
