“Don’t be so judgmental!” “Why are Christians so intolerant?” “Why can’t we just coexist?” In an age in which preference has replaced morality, many people find it difficult to speak the truth, afraid of the reactions they will receive if they say something is right or wrong. Using engaging stories and personal experience, Edward Sri helps us understand the classical view of morality and equips us to engage relativism, appealing to both the head and the heart. Learn how Catholic morality is all about love, why making a judgment is not judging a person’s soul, and why, in the words of Pope Francis, “relativism wounds people.” Questions? FEASTS CELEBRATED THIS WEEKFebruary 17th – Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Gospel Reading: Luke 6:17,20-26: As we listen to this Gospel, the Beatitudes jar our sensibilities. Those who are poor, hungry, weeping, or persecuted are called blessed. This is, indeed, a Gospel of reversals. Those often thought to have been forgotten by God are called blessed. In the list of “woes,” those whom we might ordinarily describe as blessed by God are warned about their peril. Riches, possessions, laughter, reputation . . . these are not things that we can depend upon as sources of eternal happiness. They not only fail to deliver on their promise; our misplaced trust in them will lead to our demise. The ultimate peril is in misidentifying the source of our eternal happiness. The Beatitudes are often described as a framework for Christian living. Our vocation as Christians is not to be first in this world, but rather to be first in the eyes of God. We are challenged to examine our present situation in the context of our ultimate horizon, the Kingdom of God.

February 21 – St. Peter Damian, Bishop & Doctor of the ChurchSt. Peter Damian, a man of zeal in all his actions who was brought up in the hard school of poverty, found that he had the vocation of a reformer. He exercised it in the first place against himself as one of the hermits of Fontavellana in about 1035, but he did not remain for long hidden in his cell: his colleagues soon made him their Abbot (1043). In 1057, Stephen IX made him Cardinal Bishop of Ostia. By his preaching and writings, he was one of the valuable collaborators of the eleventh century Popes in their great work of reform. Pope Leo XII declared him a Doctor of the Church in 1823.

February 22 – The Chair of St. Peter the ApostleThis feast recalls the mission of teacher and pastor conferred by Christ on Peter and continued in an unbroken line down to the present Pope. We celebrate the unity of the Church, founded upon the Apostle, and renew our assent to the Magisterium of the Roman Pontiff, extended both to truths which are solemnly defined ex cathedra, and to all the acts of the ordinary Magisterium. The feast of the Chair of Saint Peter at Rome has been celebrated from the early days of the Christian era on 18 January, in commemoration of the day when Saint Peter held his first service in Rome. The feast of the Chair of Saint Peter at Antioch, commemorating his foundation of the See of Antioch, has also been long celebrated at Rome, on 22 February. At each place a chair (cathedra) was venerated which the Apostle had used while presiding at Mass. One of the chairs is referred to about 600 A.D. by an Abbot Johannes, who had been commissioned by Pope Gregory the Great to collect oil from the lamps which burned at the graves of the Roman martyrs. — New Catholic Dictionary
