WELCOME!We are so happy that you are here! Thank you for choosing St. Columbkille as your place of worship today! We would love to walk with you on your journey of faith. Whether you are new to Christianity and Catholicism, you would like to grow in relationship with Jesus, or you are actively leading others to Jesus, there is a group here to encourage and support you. Please feel free to introduce yourself to Father Mike or Deacon Bob Baker after Mass or contact the parish office at 937-382-2236 or [email protected] to be linked up with the parish group that is right for you! To learn about our parish life, please visit stcolumbkille.org or our FB page: facebook.com/stcolumbkillecatholicchurch/.

WHO HAS STRENGTHENED ME?“Beloved: I am grateful to him who has strengthened me, Christ Jesus our Lord, because he considered me trustworthy in appointing me to the ministry. I was once a blasphemer and a persecutor and arrogant, but I have been mercifully treated because I acted out of ignorance in my unbelief. Indeed, the grace of our Lord has been abundant, along with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. This saying is trustworthy and deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. Of these I am the foremost. But for that reason, I was mercifully treated, so that in me, as the foremost, Christ Jesus might display all his patience as an example for those who would come to believe in him for everlasting life. To the king of ages, incorruptible, invisible, the only God, honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.”

Individual parishioners, and those associated with parish organizations, such as the Knights of Columbus and Sacred Heart Sodality were most generous, as always, and the poor and needy of Clinton County are very grateful. Donations included in the monthly Poor and Needy Collection Envelopes, as well as direct contributions from the community, provide the means to offer emergency assistance for food, rent, utility payments and medication costs. SAINTS CELEBRATED THIS WEEKSeptember 17 – St. Robert Bellarmine, Bishop & Doctor of the Church

St. Robert Bellarmine was the son of noble parents, he entered the Society of Jesus, finishing his theological studies at Louvain, Belgium. His services to the Church were outstanding and many. He occupied the chair of controversial theology in Rome. He defended the Holy See against anti-clericals. He wrote books against the prevailing heresies of the day.

September 18 – St. Joseph of CupertinoJoseph of Cupertino is most famous for levitating at prayer. Already as a child, Joseph showed a fondness for prayer. After a short career with the Capuchins, he joined the Conventual Franciscans. Following a brief assignment caring for the friary mule, Joseph began his studies for the priesthood. Though studies were very difficult for him, Joseph gained a great deal of knowledge from prayer. He was ordained in 1628. Joseph’s tendency to levitate during prayer was sometimes a cross; some people came to see this much as they might have gone to a circus sideshow. Joseph’s gift led him to be humble, patient, and obedient, even though at times he was greatly tempted and felt forsaken by God. He fasted and wore iron chains for much of his life.

September 19 – St. Januarius, Bishop & MartyrJanuarius was bishop of the Italian town of Benevento. Legend has it that his martyrdom was horrific. Along with six companions — imprisoned deacons and laymen he was visiting during the persecution by the Roman Emperor Diocletian in 305 — Januarius was thrown to the bears in the amphitheater of the town of Pozzuoli. He is the Patron Saint of blood banks.

September 20 – Saints Andrew Kim Tae-gon, Priest & Paul Chong Ha-sang & Companions, MartyrsThis first native Korean priest was the son of Korean converts. His father, Ignatius Kim, was martyred during the persecution of 1839 and was beatified in 1925. After baptism at the age of fifteen, Andrew traveled thirteen hundred miles to the seminary in Macao, China. After six years, he managed to return to his country through Manchuria. That same year he crossed the Yellow Sea to Shanghai and was ordained a priest. Back home again, he was assigned to arrange for more missionaries to enter by a water route that would elude the border patrol. He was arrested, tortured and finally beheaded at the Han River near Seoul, the capital. Paul Chong Ha-sang was a lay

apostle and a married man, aged forty-five. Christianity came to Korea during the Japanese invasion in 1592 when some Koreans were baptized, probably by Christian Japanese soldiers. Evangelization was difficult because Korea refused all contact with the outside world except for an annual journey to Beijing to pay taxes. On one of these occasions, around 1777, Christian literature obtained from Jesuits in China led educated Korean Christians to study. A home church began. When a Chinese priest managed to enter secretly a dozen years later, he found four thousand Catholics, none of whom had ever seen a priest. Seven years later there were ten thousand Catholics. Religious freedom came in 1883.
