PASTOR’S CORNER In the bible, there is symbolic geography. The mountain is the place of the revelation of God, the sea represents chaos, the world without God; and the desert is the place to learn dependence on God. The desert is the place without the usual supports and routines, it is the place of temptation and testing, the place to face demons so as to be free to depend on God and only on God. Israel spent forty years in the desert not because God lost his way but so they could get free of their dependence on Egypt and be ready to enter into covenant with God at Sinai. In the Gospel today Jesus is led into the desert to be tempted. He is the new Israel who overcomes temptation and depends on God alone “The Lord, your God, shall you worship and him alone shall you serve.” Lent began in the Church as the inal period of spiritual puri ication for catechumens, helping them to separate themselves from the spirits of the world so as to more readily receive the Spirit of God in Baptism. We pray with and accompany our catechumens spiritually during this special time. The catechumens in this process call us also to spiritual renewal, to once again reject worldly or destructive spirits and open ourselves anew to the Spirit of God. The Church presents us with three ancient spiritual practices to help us, prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. I would suggest that we take on one activity in each of these three areas during Lent. For prayer it might be good to individually or as a family to join us each Tuesday evening at 7.00 pm for our Holy Hour; for fasting, we have our Soup and stations on Friday evenings so that we have a lighter dinner than usual. Fasting from some screen time would be great too and replacing that with some spiritual reading or family time. For almsgiving, one possibility might be to prepare some sandwiches for our Lazarus ministry, or join us on Saturday mornings as we go out to the homeless. You could also bring socks or toiletries to mass and place them in the baskets provided. Together let’s do some things that will help us go to the desert, that is getting out of our usual comforts, routines and supports so as to be drawn into greater reliance on God God Bless

Fr Jay ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Prayer cards: Today you will notice yellow prayer sheets in the pews. The idea is that we often have personal intentions for which we need prayer. You are invited to write your prayer intention on the sheets then place them in the basket at the altar, or in the collection basket and we will later separate them out and put them in the prayer basket. Since we are always called to pray for each other in the Body of Christ we will keep those prayer intentions before the altar for our masses and we will make them a special focus of our weekly Holy Hour on Tuesday evenings.

SAFEGUARD THE CHILDREN DID YOU KNOW? Talk about chat room dangers with your teen Online chat rooms are great places for people to connect over shared interests and ideas. But for young children and teenagers who may not be internet-savvy, they’re also a great place for predators to lay groundwork. In a chat room, anyone can be whomever they want — and predators hide behind personas of friends. Talk to your child about online safety rules, such as never agreeing to meet in person and never providing personal and identifying information. Review chats frequently to ensure that your child is engaging in safe conversations. For more tips on chat room safety, request a copy of the VIRTUS® article “Exposing the Dangers of Internet Chat Rooms” at https://lacatholics.org/did-you-know/.
