PASTOR’S CORNER 1 1 PASTOR’S CORNER 1

INTRODUCTION TO READINGS: First Reading Jonah (Chap 3) The preaching of Jo-nah met with an immediate response (Repentance) in the pagan city of Nineveh

Second Reading (1 Corinthians 7:29-31) Believing that the return, Paul counsels an attitude of detachment from the things of this world.

Gospel Reading ( Mark 1:14-20) Jesus begins his preaching by calling our people to repent and embrace the Good News of salvation through Jesus Christ.

HOMILY At the age of 15 Margaret Mehran was a member of the Nazi youth movement. After the war she learned about the atrocities in Nazi concen-tration camps she realized that Hitler wasn’t the glorious leader she thought he was. She vowed never again to believe an adult. It was in this frame of mind that Margaret had doubts about her atheism. One day she began praying to God saying, “God if you do exist, give me a sign!” About this time she found a Bible. She tried to read it several times but it made no sense to her. Then one night she read it and it made sense. She wrote: Something happened to me when I read the words of Jesus.

I knew he was alive. I knew he was here,

even though I could not hear or see anything.

Jesus was real. I was no longer alone.

A few years later she became a Franciscan nun. Now she is a missionary in South Africa. She repented, converted and she chose to follow Jesus. Her story dramatizes the fact that Jesus stills calls people. Just like he called Jonah, Simon, Andrew, James and John. I remember in my first class in Fundamental Moral Theology our professor opened his Bible and read, “Repent and believe in the Good News”… The first recorded words of Jesus at the beginning of his public ministry. Jesus had more

trouble with good people than sinners. The reason is that the good do not see the need for conversion. To answer the call of conversion one must feel a dissatisfaction with oneself and have a longing for something better. There must be a sense that some-thing is wrong or at least that something is missing. To take on board the call to repentance de-mands openness, honesty, humility and above all courage. The courage to admit one’s guilt, ask for forgiveness, and resolve to change. Repentance is a positive thing. It means acquiring a new vision, taking a new direction and living by better values. In a word, it leads to new life and always leads to joy. THE FUGITIVE PROPHET One of the most intriguing stories in the pag-es of the Bible is the tale of Jonah, The Runaway Prophet. Jonah is commanded by God to go to Ni-neveh and tell them that God is going to destroy them in forty days. Jonah believes that God will not destroy because God is merciful. Jonah makes the mistake of thinking he can travel out of God’s reach. He boards the ship and settle down to sleep for the voyage. There is a great storm and the ship threatens to break up. The cap-tain orders Jonah to get up and pray and when Jo-nah sees how close disaster is for everyone he ad-mits that he is the cause, because of his disobeying God. So the captain tell the sailors to throw him overboard. Subsequently, he is swallowed by the whale. Jonah has an opportunity to repent. He prays, he reflects, he remembers and then he prom-ises to fulfill the word of the Lord. Then the Lord orders him to go to Nineveh to preach so they would repent. The story of Jonah holds out hope for all of us. In the story everyone repents. By choosing to repent we too can change our lives. That is the Gospel. That is the Good News. And repentance need not be a crusty, grouchy af-fair. As Jonah experienced, you can still have a whale of a time.

LITURGY

Third Sunday in Ordinary Time

A New Way, A New World When the people of Nineveh repented, they showed it by wearing sackcloth and fas ng from food. Some mes we might think that way: That repen ng means punish-ing ourselves or feeling sorry. Jesus sees things differ-ently. He preached repentance that was a change of heart, a new way of looking at things, a new way of ac ng. In the gospel today, we see an example. The first people he calls to be disciples were fisherman. They would have considered their family, their part-ners, and their boat as the most important things in their lives. You need all of them to be a successful fish-erman. Yet the disciples don't even hesitate when called by Jesus. They leave behind their boats, their nets, even their father, to follow Jesus. They don't wor-ry about what they will do, or look back at what they are leaving behind. Now they are fishers of men. Their "repentance" was more than just giving up sins. They were beginning a new life and a new way of looking at the world. Saint Paul refers to this as a new world. When he talks about not using the world fully, he means not fully engaged in the world, but looking to a be er one, where God is more important than any passing pleasure or pain. Is your marriage an example of God's love for your friends and rela ves? When you are rejoicing, do you give thanks to God? When you are shopping, do you buy what you really need, or what you think will make you happy? Jesus calls us all to this new way of living. With Jesus, we can make a new world.
