PASTOR’S CORNER 1 1

Hallow Een has been high-jacked. It has been re-duced to Witches, Goblins, Costumes and

Par es that is closer to Pre-Chris an Religions than Chris anity. The word Hallow is an old English word for Saint and “Een” is an abbreviated word for even-

ing. It means the evening before the Feast of All Saints. It is a Celebra on of the Communion of

Saints such as our Parents, Grandparents, Neighbors, Friends, Teachers, Priests, Nuns and all who have

touched our lives and inspire us to live the Chris an life.

The following is by Edward Hays. As the cold winds of November swirl around us, we reflect on this month of remembrance of the holy dead of our families. We have remembered in prayer and in our hearts those persons with whom we have shared life, and who have so richly shared life with us. Perhaps a story can help us reflect on and appreciate some of the gi s we have received from our departed loved ones. A true story can hold the same power as a para-ble, and so I’d like to relate what happened to a cer-tain Bri sh actress named Sarah Allgood. She moved to the United States in 1940 a er having nursed back to health a friend who had been famous in the role of Eliza Dooli le in Shaw’s play Pygmali-on. When they parted, the recovered actress Sarah Allgood a toke of her apprecia on. It was a water-color pain ng of a graceful heron. Sarah took the pain ng with her to her new home in Hollywood. In the first dream she had there, her actress friend appeared, saying “Have you found my gi to you from the grave? Look behind the pain ng.” Sarah was puzzled by the dream, as she had no reason to believe that her friend was not alive. But she removed the cardboard back and looked behind the picture. There she found a draw-ing of her famous friend, sir Max Beerbohm. The drawing was worth thousands of dollars at the me.

Later, Sarah Allgood learned that her friend had died in France the very day of her mysterious dream in Hollywood. We proclaim the mystery of our faith, our belief in the Communion of Saints, when we open our-selves to be gi ed by the saints we have loved. The Communion of Saints is the community of those who have died in the loving embrace of God. They now live in that inexhaus ble life which is beyond our present knowledge, but our living faith assures us that we are s ll in communion with them. Our ra onal minds balk at such a possibility and our twen eth century sophis ca on objects to such an unscien fic reality. Yet, our faith says it is possible for those who love us in life to con nue to love us even a er they have passed through the door of death. In the summer me, if we wish to feel the breeze, we must open our windows. How easily we close the windows of our hearts and minds by cold logic and reason. How easily we shut out the possibili es of being guided by our parents or friends who have died and are no longer physically with us. If we be-lieve in the Communion of Saints, and if our inner doors and windows are open, can we not feel the grace and guidance that comes from those who have loved us? Behind the symbols of our family heirlooms—an old photograph, a rosary, a prayer book, chair or dish—is a gi , just as there was behind Sarah Allgood’s watercolor pain ng. We who stumble along the path to holiness need only prayerfully open ourselves to whatever gi s those who always loved us in life wish to send us from beyond the grave.

THIRTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Spread the Word I used to take Jesus' saying at the end of today's Gospel (Luke 20:38) as a proof that God was just as present to me in the twenty-first century as the LORD was to Abra-ham thousands of years before the me of Christ. But people in Jesus' era had no concep on of me as a di-mension. The phrase "God of the living" means that the dead are alive again in the Resurrec on. Why was it easier for the Sadducees to imagine the impossible--a woman wondering who her spouse is in heaven--than to imagine the Resurrec on? Even today, some people find it easier to imagine a roman c vampire than to be-lieve in someone rising from the dead. Think about how much money and effort go into adver sing one of those vampire movies. Do we see many people put that kind of enthusiasm into their faith? Let's take a hint from adver sing. I get very annoyed with ads that go on and on about how good their product is and how you can get two for $10 (plus $15 postage and handling). I'm more likely to buy a product a friend shows me that will do something useful. Why not spread the word like that? Be "useful" for God. Offer to help someone carry in their groceries or fill out their income tax forms. Be generous with your me. And if anyone asks why, you can tell them you are just grateful for what God has done for you. People aren't looking to be bored by an-other commercial. They are looking for signs of God's love that will lead them to faith. Tom Schmidt, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.
